I was fresh in town for a weekend event and needed to grab food quick. This spot on one of the corners of the food hall was not getting as much attention as other spots and it absolutely deserves more attention. I ordered the combo plate with curry chicken, beans & rice, and cabbage, and also got a beef patty. The patty was first thing I devoured on the way to my event and it was delicious, well-seasoned with the perfect (for me) amount of spice. The combo plate was what got the attention of the other people at my event between the portion size and the aroma. The curry chicken was very tender and easy to got off the bone, and also had great flavor. The sides were good as well. For just under twenty dollars for the combo, the amount of food was excellent. So though half of my family is West African, I hadn't heard of anything on this menu, except the fried plantain, which we call dodo in Nigeria. Though it was cut in a weird way, that was still good. I got the sampler, and all three meats were delicious, so was their rice and beans, and I also got a couple meat patties. There's something wholesome about a simple and easy-to-follow menu, especially when you discover a new restaurant. I ordered a beef patty, veggie samosa, plantains and the sampler - curry chicken, jerk chicken, cabbage and rice. The curry chicken was excellent - tender, flavorful and hitting the right notes. I enjoyed the cabbage side - I know it's not always a crowd favorite, but I find it an excellent, crunchy-sweet way to cut the richness of curry dishes. The plantains are on the softer side, but well-fried. The samosa crust was as flaky as expected, carefully wrapped around well-seasoned vegetables (notes of coriander and cumin I believe), and served hot. We went to the City Foundry today and had a look around their busy food hall. I decided to try Chez Ali as I have always wanted to try jerk chicken. I ordered it with brown rice and it was so flavorful! I really enjoyed having this as my first experience with jerk chicken. The spice was the perfect amount and even the rice had its own distinct flavor that I really enjoyed. The cabbage on the side was a nice palate cleanser as well; it definitely took away some of the kick. I'll have to come back here again to try other menu items in the future! read more

Very glad that this place was cafeteria-style so we didn't have to wait that long for our orders in comparison to other places at the City Foundry. Honestly might be the best version of red beans & rice I have ever had. I also really appreciated the jerk chicken, which was super flavorful as the seasoning penetrated even the chicken itself. Overall, I really enjoyed eating at Chez Ali and thought that it was such a great introduction to Ivorian Senegalese cuisine. Would definitely come back to try more. First I was highly impressed at how clean their station was and there were no insects flying around the food. I saw the owners sister at the counter assisting another customer while I waited for my turn. Then my eyes lit up at how beautifully colorful and fresh their food looked, While she finished assisting the customer before me I took pics and read their sign. I apparently lucked up. They happened to have oxtails on the day I visited. I assumed they served them daily.......NOOOOO. So of course I went with the $20 oxtail plate, opted for red beans and rice and it comes with cabbage. I texted my nephew before arriving to view the menu and decide what he wanted. He overlooked the oxtails and went for the sampler platter$17, which included jerk chicken and curry chicken. I got him red beans and rice as well as cabbage. I also ordered a side of plantains. WHYYYYYYYYYY are their oxtails EXTREMELY large and tender, beautifully browned, just fall off the bone juicy. The red beans and rice were perfectly cooked and the cabbage was absolutely delicious. My plantains were nice size tender pieces of beautifully cooked yellow, sweet pillows of heaven. When I tell you that their food is beautifully seasoned and cooked with a mothers love. This is my new go-to for a oxtail plate. The owners sister is soooooo nice and sweet. She has the loveliest Jamaican accent mixed that New Orleans flare. When I got back to work I let my co-worker taste.......chef kissed. Once I heard how delicious the food tasted I was soo excited to eat it later for dinner. Once I got home and washed my hands. I grabbed a fork, prayed over the offerings and dug in. My mind was completely blown. I ate on my plate for two days and have been dreaming about returning ever since. They also offer hand pies. They were beautifully brown and flakey. Chez Ali knows great food, knows how to captivate your palate with various spices to conjure up mouth-watering delicacies and provide awesome customer service. I'd guess that was a west African vibe, but I don't have the experience to know for sure. Get the brown rice like I did, for some added flavor over white. And the warm slaw melds it all together. Your friends will all contest about their favorite restaurant in the City Foundry. And for good reason - there's usually a pick for everyone. But you're gonna have to decline their opinion because we all know the People's Champ here: Chez Ali. Chez Ali is Afro-Caribbean cuisine at its finest at a no-frills counter service stand. The place is really non-descript in the City Foundry, tucked away in the corner for who knows why (but honestly, great for the regulars like myself). The food here is marinated and spiced perfectly, you can taste the seasoning that has been dispersed to all of their food with love. Whether it's the Curry, Jerk, or Yassa chicken, you really cannot go wrong. Each provides flavor and will leave your tastebuds happy (especially the plantains). What else leaves me happy is the value - I can consistently say I've left full and with leftovers for the next couple of days. That in itself is a steal - getting some bomb food and a second helping when you know you're definitely too lazy to get the pots and pans out for the 573,281th time. I'm a big fan of Chez Ali, and I hope they continue to get the praise and recognition they deserve. The City Foundry is shaping to become a staple in STL, and I hope this place retains it's reign of the food stall throne. read more

Really delicious food. Definitely the best cooking/food out of all the food hall stalls by far. I had the chicken combo plate which included the jerk chicken and the curry chicken and rice. The jerk chicken was really delicious and Chez Ali did not skimp on spices on flavors here. The curry chicken was equally delicious. I went with some friends and my plate from Chez Ali was by far the best out of everything ordered (and we've totally made our rounds by now...don't get me started on the food/quality/value of some of the other stalls...). One thing that kinda rubbed me the wrong/weird way and why I'm docking a star was that this chicken combo was advertised clearly on the chalkboard as a $15 or $16 (it's been over a month and i forget the exact dollar value) chicken combo meal but somehow I was charged $20+ when he rang me up. I didn't question it right away due to a long line of people waiting behind me. I'll have to re-visit again and make sure I get charged what I order the next time because the food really was delicious despite the high price tag, though the portion can possibly feed 1.5 to 2 people. read more
