This is a small local spot where you can immediately tell there is no pretense. Sometimes talking with the owner the Jamaican accent is so strong I do replays in my head to be sure I understand and other times my blank look or I'm sorry gets a redo. But it's all good and we all smile through. Took my brother Sunday night while he was in town cause he lives in a less diverse area and craves city access to all the thing. As soon as he said let's get Jamaican I began craving a meat pie. Have mercy I love them! They ain't playing with the spice either so I keep drinks handy. Ended up ordering one meat pie and a bowl of the soup of the day. It was red bean soup he said. But wow the depth of flavors and textures, it should get a better name! Love it and happily ate it all! The meat pie took longer of course to come out and they weren't kidding it was hot! Loved it and shared a tiny bite (cut off) with bro whose eyebrows lifted in joy. He had the jerk chicken plate and ate every dang bit! I have had wings, goat curry, jerk chicken, curry chicken, rum punch and lots more on other visits and had always left happy & full. The folks who work here are good folks and enjoy seeing others enjoy the food they prepare. On nice days there are a few tables out front, good to sit there except at rush hour cause you are next to the street. Everything was outstanding and too my surprise the Jerk chicken wasn't too spicy. I know some will hate to hear this but I'm not a fan of eating food and having the inside of my mouth feel like a 5 alarm fire! Irie Eats has done the best job of any STL restaurant I've been to of recreating those delectable dishes. I ordered the jerk wings, which were a perfect blend of flavor and spice. Only a few tables, and a long bar. The owner, chef who's nickname is Catchy, in his heavy Jamaican accent discussed the menu with us. Since it was Happy Hour, there are beer and drink specials, too. My friend and I decided to have the oxtail dinner. And we were not disappointed. The plates were overflowing with freshly cooked cabbage w/ carrots and onions, peas and rice, plantains, and oxtails in gravy that simply fell off the bone and melted in our mouths. I'm disappointed because I had high hopes expecting fresh food and the cost did not justify the quality. I had the Run Punch and it was delicious though...it was worth the cost for sure. I'd never had Jamaican food before, so I was worried about the spice level. But I did really want to try it. I'm happy to report it was delish. My dining partner thought so, too. The rice and cabbage balanced out the spiciness of the chicken. Even the inside of the chicken was flavorful, which I feel like is missing in US barbecue, which is it kind of reminded me of with the spice rub. The woman put a spicy sauce on the side (possibly just because I asked if the meal was very spicy), which was also flavorful and kind of sweet. I dipped my meat in here and there to go between the two different flavors. It did come on the bone, which is not my preference, but that's okay. We also tried the callaloo, as quick Google search showed it was something my dining partner would like, which she did. She said it was like collard greens but with some kind of spice in it. Not for me; it seems like an acquired taste. The parking is not great, and it's a bit pricey, but we're both glad we tried it. I have eaten here several times in the last year and each time was excellent. The owner/chef/server is congenial and informative, and even when I was the only one there, he was very appropriate (not overbearing, and yet attentive). I don't know a lot about Jamaican food, and he answered all my questions and then some. My favorite is the "national dish," which includes a salt cod dish with rice and vegetables and an amazing fruit I'd never had before with a lot of UMAMI flavor, for sure. I also tried two of their soups: liked them both a lot. Very good prices, generous portions (I had enough for an additional meal another day). . It's very small, and parking is difficult (on Olive), but there is a side lot. Come early or expect to wait or sit at the counter. I wish they opened at 11 AM daily, but they do not (it varies: CHECK). Also, closed on Mondays. Enjoy! read more
