Complaint Against: Cheslock Optical Date of Purchase: August 25, 2025 Date Order Received: October 8, 2025 Description of Complaint: I ordered prescription glasses from Cheslock Optical on August 25, 2025. At the time of purchase, I was told they would be ready in approximately 2 to 2 1/2 weeks. However, I did not receive them until October 8, 2025 -- a delay of more than six weeks. During that time, I called the office multiple times for updates. Most of the time, I had to leave a message and never received a return call. On the few occasions I did reach someone, the office manager, Rhea, would take over the call. Her behavior was extremely unprofessional -- she was rude, raised her voice at me for calling, and hung up on me several times. Rhea informed me that my glasses were shipped to Cheslock on October 2, 2025. The vendor later confirmed they were received by Cheslock on October 3, yet I was not contacted until October 8 to pick them up. When I arrived at the office, Rhea simply handed me the glasses and said, "There you go!" She did not offer to open the case, verify the order, or ensure that the glasses fit properly -- basic steps I would expect from any optical provider. Due to the repeated unprofessional conduct, lack of communication, and unacceptable customer service, I have filed a formal grievance with my medical insurance provider. I believe Cheslock Optical should be reviewed for continued participation in any insurance network, as this level of service does not meet acceptable standards of care. Had I researched the business beforehand, I would have seen that numerous similar complaints have been posted on Google, the BBB, Yelp, and Facebook. Desired Resolution: I am requesting a formal apology and assurance that this pattern of unprofessional behavior will be addressed. I also recommend that the BBB review this company's business practices and communication standards. read more

Rita was unpleasant in telling us my husband was ineligible to be seen due to previously missed appointments dating back 4 years. 2 times. One due to COVID the other I could not reach anyone for days leading to the scheduled appointment. I am quite meticulous in taking notes and we pay a pretty penny for Joe to have the advantage plan that covers optical I feel her conduct could have been more professional and compassionate. I could tell she was passing judgment on my husband's thin build and gaunt appearance. We get that often. My husband is chronically ill and can't put weight on. Additionally our dog passed just days before leaving us both pretty tattered looking. Nevertheless I feel like Rita's conduct could have been more productive and compassionatem. I'm shocked that she would hold a missed appointment from 5 years ago against my husband. She made a point to inform us that the doctor don't get paid when we no show. It's money out of his pocket and snarled. I might add that you can't ever reach this establishment and have to go in to talk to anyone. On a positive note the ace was clean and well stocked with merchandise. The atmosphere soothing until Rita made her appearance. read more

I went in with my neighbor, to advocate on her behalf who received very poor and extremely unprofessional help/service from the manager (Rhea)...who is also the Dr. Chestlock's Wife. The glasses they fitted my neighbor with were way to small for her face; the lenses moved around in the frames; and they charged an outlandish price for one pair...over $1,100. Once in the office, the manager, (Rhea) immediately became defensive and combative. It was obvious (Rhea) could care less about my neighbors well-being with getting fitted properly with an appropriate frame. The manager (Rhea) said "she came in six times to try on frames. Those are the frames she chose!" (Rhea) basically was saying, "tough luck!" I questioned the service and duty she is supposed to provide each customer. (Rhea) called me an 'ass' and became extremely combative and unprofessional...unlike what Dr. Chestlock's mission statement claims that his staff will provides to "each and every customer." I questioned the "highway-robbery" price and (Rhea) said it was non of my business what they charge. I responded with, "as the advocate for my neighbor, it IS her business to know why you charged her insurance well over double the cost for the exact same glasses/lens setup that (3) other eye clinics quoted the cost shouldn't have been more than $650 at the most. More name calling came from (Rhea) and she demanded that we leave the premises or she'll call the police. We didn't leave, she called the police. She angrily took back the glasses, and said she will refund the amount that insurance didn't cover and that we'd have to wait off the premises while she wrote the check. I said we will leave once you hand over the check. (More name calling from Rhea). Once handed the check, Rhea informed my neighbor that if she came back, she would trespassing and she's is no longer to step foot on the property...a few more unprofessional words regurgitate out of (Rhea's) mouth as we left. While sitting in the parking lot, now on the phone with the involved insurance company, the police did show up and nicely asked that we leave the premises. I explained the situation and they understood. I suspect (Rhea), the wife of Dr. Cheslock, and manager of Chestlock Optical, is-and-has been committing insurance fraud. I highly advise all, to not use their services...you'll end up paying a ridiculous fraudulent price for a useless pair of glasses. read more

Been going there for several years and, like another reviewer stated, the Dr. is very professional yet not very personable. But I'm not going there to make friends so that's fine. The reason for the two star rating however is his wife, Rhea Cheslock. As the office manager, she is consistently rude and acts as if the patient is inconveniencing her. Like I couldn't believe she was talking to me the way she was when it was happening! Family businesses are only a good thing when the entire family can represent the business is a professional manner and this one does not fall into that category. read more

Awful customer service. No one helped me pick out frames even when I asked. I received my glasses and they were so tight I could not wear them. When I went in to ask for an adjustment or help they were horrible. One woman removed her mask and told me she tried to tell me to pick out something else when I had been there but wasn't even the person who was in when I had my appointment. She then told me she could do nothing for me and called me a little witch when I told them they needed to do better for customer service.I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I had heard bad things previously but knew they had been in the area for a long time and wanted to support the small business. Do not go here. read more

Myself and my boyfriend went in and had a pleasant time. Good help and good atmosphere. Plenty of frames to choose from. I had my eyes examined and the man doing the exam was knowledgeable as well as very respectful! The receptionist was very helpful and polite although I did expect to be tossed out because of my loud voice since I find it very difficult to speak due to a medical problem. I've been going here for years and I've always had excellent service and always professional.

Dr. Cheslock did eye exam, which went well and gave me prescription for lenses. I gave my frames to Cheslock for new lenses. After wearing glasses, one lense falls out of frames. I called Dr. Cheslock office where Rhea office manager tells me to call the labs, so she gave me phone number to Hoya Optical 209-579-7739. Hoya tells me to pay $35 for a repair but Dr. Cheslock office will have to send due to Doctors office is their contact. I call Dr. Cheslock office after several calls with no return I get a Lisa who says Rhea instructed they will not get involved with sending back because they did not sell the frames even though they are the ones who sent frames to get lenses installed. Hoya Optical has been willing to fix, but Doctor Cheslock office will not send and now I have broken frames with tape. Customer service is a zero with this business. Everyone involved has been willing to help except Rhea the office manager who will not send in to have frame fixed . The cost was not cheap either , all was paid out of pocket and my insurance. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Cheslock for many years (15+). He is a wonderful eye doctor: polite, professional, thorough, state of the art equipment. However, making an appointment is nearly impossible. I understand that the pandemic has put a strain on business and employees. However, I left 5 messages over a period of 3 weeks, with no return phone call. The phone message stated their Thanksgiving hours (in April), so it seems no one pays attention to the voice mail, despite the recorded message stating my call would be returned as soon a possible. So, I stopped in to make an appointment, only to be treated rudely and basically told they did not need my business. It is sad that I have to go somewhere else. But I have found a clinic that is happy to have me as a patient. I hope Dr. Cheslock reads these. He deserves better office support. read more

DISCRIMINATION While waiting in the parking lot Rhea, the office manger and dr.s wife, rudely came to the door and asked us to turn down the music and asked if we were next? We said yes. Moments later we walked into the office. Rhea to the right of us, points at Zac, whom was ticking, and says we have a no crussing policy. He explained what tourettes syndrome is and dhe said she didnt care. Asked if he could talk to the manager, to which she responded, I am the manager. Asked for her name. Her responce was it's on the door. I explained who I was and so did Chad, Zacs husband, and that we had called ahead and that everything should be in his file, her response was that they didnt have any paperwork work her. Explained proper pronouns, and repeated again, you're kicking me out because of a neurological disorder to which her response was yes. I have never seen discrimination like that in all of my life. Normally, once one has been educated their responce changes, not for this lady! My hope is to educate others so that situations like this become viewer and far between. read more

I will say, the doctor himself is nice, he's quiet and there's not much small talk BUT he is always polite. I have gone to Cheslock for all my eye exams, but definitely noticed a slippage in the staff over my last few visits- the last 2 times the women at the desk were snooty and rude and beyond unhelpful, but I decided to give them another shot, but this last time was it for me and my family and hopefully this reviews saves others the time of being talked to like an inconvenience and an annoyance. The older lady, who I assume is the doctors wife should probably just stay in her office and not even be in public eye she was so rude and short. I planned to go into details with our latest experience there but reading the rest of the comments I don't feel the need to considering most everyone else has had similar experiences there. I went to have my annual eye exam and new glasses ordered. This is the first time Ive been to this office. Everyone was very nice including the Dr. The exam was very thorough, a little more thorough then I think Ive had at other offices over the years, I was very grateful for the extra explanations on my issues. The handling of paperwork and insurance was easy. They also have a very wide range selection of frames. Con: The only Con I have is the time when the glasses are in and I picked them up. For the first time ever (at any offices), they didn't sit me down to try on the glasses for final fit, have me check the lenses for any obvious issues, & to have any questions answered. Instead, the glasses were handed to me over the front counter where I could ask questions if needed. It really adds a lot if this would be done as it is at most other offices. Initially, I chose this office because they are 1 of only a few places that accepts my vision insurance and because they're open on Saturdays which is my day off. They were pretty booked so I had to wait a few weeks, but thats ok. When I walked in no one was at the front desk. No people around. Eventually someone came out and gave me paperwork. The girls at the front desk were nice enough and somewhat professional, but always seemed too busy elsewhere to be able to assist me. I didn't wait too long to see the doctor. Once he came in, he was very precise and prompt, and all business. No smile. No small talk. Business only. But that's ok. He was good at his job and wasn't mean or rude, just not very personable. But he seemed very knowledgeable and answered my questions. Their equipment seems to be all top of the line, they had some equipment I've never seen in the last 23 years I've been going to eye doctors. Which was interesting and fun. The office could be a bit more welcoming and the doctor could be a little more personable, but it wasn't a terrible experience. Sadly, due to the fact that I wasn't especially impressed and then, to top it off, a close friend of mine was treated terribly the other day, so I don't believe I'll be going back. I like everything about my encounter except one thing. The clinic atmosphere was freindly and relaxing. It was clean and waiting area was comfortable. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. I didnt have to wait lomg either for my scheduled appointment. The optometrist was also pleasant n polite. He answered all my question as I am new to wearing rx glasses. The only thing I didnt like was the smell from the doctors hands, smells like a smoker. The smell bothers me a lot. Doctor shoild maybe quite smoking or something especialy when ur hands have to hover near patients nose. Sorry. I only got to meet one doctor so hipefully the others dont smoke ;) see u guys next year ;) read more

I've been to a lot of eye doctors over the years and Cheslock Optical is by far my favorite. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. I'm not a fan of the eye doctor and was probably their worst patient but they were so sweet and had so much patience with me, which I truly appreciate. They also offered 30% off their frames for a military discount and are family owned. Highly recommend them! read more

If I could give them negative stars I would. Worst treatment I've ever had, they didn't even help me when I was choosing frames (although they helped the customer that came in right behind me who was white). Then they f*** up my glasses and blame it on me and even bill my insurance extra. They "repair them" again and now they are chipped and scratched when I get them. I ask if I can return them and get new glasses, they tell me my insurance won't cover it ( i called my insurance and they said no problem). I call to tell them this and the rude older woman that answers tells me that they won't accept a return because they had already lost money repairing my glasses (not my fault) She then goes on "you get the glasses you get and thank you for making my job more difficult". It's been over two months and I still don't have glasses. Stay away unless you want to be overcharged, blamed for any mistakes they make, and treated like they are doing you a favor while insulting you. read more

Dr. Cheslock was helpful, professional and gave you what you would expect from a professional. The three ladies in the office were rude, inappropriate and in some cases non-helpful. At least they were rude to all customers consistently. I cannot say I have ever had a worse experience in Coos Bay. The first was put out that I walked in and asked for an appointment. The second young woman treated me like a five year old, warning me not to be late for the appointment and the oldest and meanest was rude when I called up and notified guests that I would be late because I have an appointment. What is sad is you want to support local business, however, they do not work hard to support their customers. My review will not hurt Cheslock, or wake them up. It seems they have a large practice and are at odds with most of their customers. If you go to Walmart where commission sales people welcome you with open arms, it is a whole new experience. I have never recommended Walmart to anyone, however, compared to the ladies at Cheslock it's far friendlier and a nicer atmosphere. read more

I live in Eugene but I am visiting my parents for an extended stay...I am so very impressed with the service I received not only from Dr Cheslock but his staff as well... everyone was friendly while maintaining a professional demeanor; the office was extremely clean, calm and inviting; the equipment was the latest top of the line and most importantly amazing selection of glasses,including Coach, were less than half of what I would have expected to pay and Eugene... I will definitely be driving the two and a half hours for my next eye exam and eyewear! read more

I went for my appointment and was told if you try on frames they have to be put in a pile for cleaning and can not be touched again, so I thought I will just hold them and examine the quality of the frame I might be interested In! So I started to examine what i would buy to make sure the quality was a good standard, then suddenly the big girl jumped to the counter and said Sir you are commiting a crime by touching the frames and not putting them into the cleaning pile, I said your instructions were If I tried them on, not if I examined them to see if the quality was worth the price. Then she said you JUST committed a crime! Wow I Said I did not want to commit a crime, Then I said you did not clean the puff blow machine at the start of the examine like they do at walMart, but I did not complain I just wanted to buy two pair of glasses.(note so many frames were in the clean up box that there was not much to look at anyway I thought how lazy!) When I was accused of a crime I calmly walked out after saying I do not want to commit a crime! when examining the frame and being called a criminal (I thought why did you not just simply supply a set of disposable gloves for just examining the quality) how can you spend $800.00 for glasses and not be able to examine the quality, some kind of a scam I did not know, but was glad I walked out after being called a criminal(saying what I did was criminal wow!) I took my granddaughter in to get glasses on friday. I've seen Dr cheslock for 25 yrs & never had a problem. I've taken my kids & self for years & always thought he was wonderful. Ive sent numerous people there over time, but will make sure to tell everyone how insufferable & unprofessional this office is now. Dr Cheslock's wife was suppose to help my granddaughter find glasses. Dr. Cheslock had taken us over & allowed us to begin looking at glasses & she was irritated that we began as she said "I have to show you those don't start looking", again after Dr already was showing us. My grand is 6, she kept looking. She has OHP+ & was allowed to look thru a box of glasses. The lady had little interest in helping & kept telling her "you can't have those" rudely & pointing to frames that didn't fit her or she didn't like. The entire time she acted put out & like we were a bother. I have always paid hundreds for my own glasses & contacts even, & said I'd buy her glasses. The woman told me I couldn't & I said yes I can I've always paid for them & took my granddaughter to the other side of the office to show her other glasses, where she said that lady is mean. The woman, dramatically exhaling, told me I could not have those glasses again, and I told her yes I can I will pay for them myself. KEEP IN MIND She should've been showing them to us. She then haughtily laughed & stated, if you buy those you pay for the lenses. Where I responded, of course & that's fine. My grand then said that lady is mean why is that lady so mean, where i said just ignore her & let's find some glasses. We continue to look through the store & found some that she liked. My grand ran across the office excitedly into dr. Cheslock wife's office. She came out of the office continuing her attitude where I was at this point tired of it & said can you please stop being rude. She said tell me how I'm being rude & then you can leave. I said excuse me I can leave as I was shocked being told to leave after asking to be treated with some type of respect as most places will give customers. She snatched the glasses out of my 6 year olds hands hurting her fingers & told us to leave or she would call the police. AGAIN, this was over telling her she was rude saying that I had been going there for 25 years & had never been treated so poorly. People came from the back room who had not heard or seen any of it to offer their rude comments as well. By this point I was irate, even cussing them on my exit. After putting my distraught grand into the car who was crying because the mean lady wouldn't let her get her glasses to see; her words, I went back in and spoke with dr. Cheslock. Dr. Cheslock's wife would not allow me to get a word in edgewise but continue to talk over me & she kept grabbing the phone asking Dr "can I just call the police to have her removed." This office has zero customer service skills they are rude to people she acted the entire time like we were wasting her time and she had better things to do. She did not help my child she refused to talk kindly to her most people will talk to a six-year-old with some sort of a patient, caring tone. If you cannot talk to Children you should not be helping children. My 23 year old daughter was also with me who has been a patient of dr. Cheslock's for years. She was appalled at the lack of care, concern, customer service, help, assistance that we received. Dr. Cheslock himself looked appalled and you could tell he was embarassed of his wife's tyrannical behavior. He and I tried to speak but she kept interrupting like a child and continued to talk over us saying please let me call the police I'm just going to call the police and get her removed. Once she said she'd replay the video which I wanted. UNABLE TO SPEAK WITHOUT HER INTERRUPTING DR ASKED ME TO GO I feel horrible for dr. Cheslock having to deal with her in his personal & professional life. Also having a girl in the back come out and scream at me that I'm a horrible person because I defended the treatment of my granddaughter is bewildering to me. Go somewhere else . read more

This place is the absolute worst. They have poor business practices, they are liars and the glasses are not good either. They lied to me in March about being in my insurance network and they did not let me know for months later. Then as I was trying to work it out with the insurance company, they sent it to collection agency and ruined my credit without a warning at all. When I went into the office to talk to them about it, the doctor's wife (also the billing lady) who is the absolute worst business person ever, called the police on me to remove me from the office. All because I demanded to talk to the doctor about it and would not leave until I talked to him. We all need to band together against these doctors that take advantage of innocent people. read more

My sweet 6 year old niece had an eye appointment recently, which she was very excited for, and I tagged along with my mom (her grandma) to go with her for her very first eye appointment. Everything started just fine, my niece behaved so well and seemed to be having fun...until Dr. Cheslock's wife started to help her and my mom choose glasses. I was sitting on the waiting room couch so I didn't see the glasses they were looking at; but all I heard was this woman snapping "You can't have those." over and over at my niece. After a minute or two of this my mom brought my niece to the opposite side to choose other glasses, and I watched Dr. Cheslock's wife walk over behind the counter to them. She leaned against the counter and condescendingly informed my mom that she couldn't have those glasses. My mom replied she could, and the woman repeated herself and said the insurance wouldn't cover it. My mom said "I know, it's fine, I'll buy them." and Mrs. Cheslock rudely said we had to pay for the lenses too, and then stormed back to her office without continuing to show them glasses. At this point I was a bit shocked at how this woman was behaving so I decide to join them looking at glasses, and we looked for a minute before my niece found the perfect pair. She was super happy and ran over to Dr. Cheslock's wife's office, mom and I laughed and told her to come back, which she did. The woman came out of her office acting extremely put-out or like we were wasting her time, and the continued to be rude and condescending, continuously interrupting as we were trying talk. Mom looked at me a bit irked (as was I) and began to tell her how she wasn't very nice, keeping her cool and starting off with those words exactly. Dr. Cheslock's wife straightened up and tersely asked, "Excuse me?" My mom replied that she was being rude, all we were trying to do was get some glasses and she wasn't being very nice, but couldn't finish because she was interrupted yet again. "Can I please finish talking?" mom asked, to which Mrs. Cheslock replied very matter-of-factly, "Yes, you can, and then you can leave." I was absolutely stunned at this woman's response, who had been completely horrid to my niece for no reason and then apparantly thinks she hadn't done any wrong. Finally fed up, my mom said "That's fine, we're going somewhere else," and Mrs. Cheslock shortly said, Alright," snatching the glasses out of my niece's hand and catching her fingers in the frame before walking back to her office in an accomplished manner. My niece looked horrified, frozen and tears coming into her eyes because this woman was being so mean to her. Before I could say anything, mom again addressed her behavior and what she just did to my niece's fingers, saying she was a horrible woman. Mrs. Cheslock fired back a barrage of similar insults, telling mom she was the horrible one and that we were now trespassing...acting this way because her lack of customer service was brought to attention. A younger woman from the back then came out of nowhere to tell us to leave and we weren't welcome, even though she hadn't seen or heard what just happened. Leave we did, my niece bawling her eyes out because "the mean lady didn't let me get glasses and now I won't be able to see", her own words, and her fingers were red and swollen from where they caught. I have never been so appalled than I was at the customer service "skills" of Dr. Cheslock's wife and that staff member, if you can't talk to a child with care and patience then you shouldn't be working with children, or people in general. read more
