The absolute worst experience I've ever had with a medical professional in my entire life. When we moved to the area, we got a few recommendations for Chesapeake Pediatrics based on its long-standing reputation and recently retired physicians. I took my son there for his well-child visit and had a good experience. However, when I brought my son in a few weeks later for high fever following a tick bite, it was horrible. First, while waiting for our appointment, Dr. Jobes came up to the receptionist who relayed a message about a parent who had called and asked to have their child's asthma prescription changed. Dr. Jobes said to the receptionist in an annoyed tone, "Parents don't dictate to me what I prescribe for their child." I was a little taken aback by her attitude as well as lack of professionalism to allow this conversation to be overheard by a patient. Afterwards, the nurse called us back and my son (age 5 years, 1 month) refused to get weighed or measured. (We had just moved 2 months before from out-of-state and he was scared of seeing a new doctor and kept telling me he wanted to see our old pediatrician.) The nurse seemed annoyed, and I explained that we had just moved, plus, he wasn't feeling well. When she got us into the exam room, she tried to take his temperature under his arm with a stick thermometer and he got scared and tried to get away from her. I attempted to calm him down and explain that she was just taking his temperature, and it wouldn't hurt. I quickly apologized to the nurse and explained that he had never had his temp taken like that (old PED used the ear thermometer). She tried again, and he started howling and kicked at her as he was trying to burying himself in my arms. She looked at me like "I give up." and left. I started trying to calm my son (he was worried it was a shot) and explain to him that the nurse was just trying to help and he can't kick at her. (He didn't make contact, but he was definitely trying his hardest to keep her away.) Dr. Jobes opened the door a few moments later and without any greeting, immediately scolded my son by saying "You do NOT kick at my nurse!" As she walked over to wash her hands she said, "You are here for a suspected fever and we are going to take your temperature." Well, any parent can tell you that went over like a lead balloon with a sick child who was already crying and scared. He started screaming again as she came at him with the thermometer and tried to lift his arm as I held the rest of him. He was doing his best to get away from her, and I explained to her over his screams that he was scared it was a shot bc he had never had his temp taken like that before bc our old PED used an ear thermometer. She's trying to pull his arm up and snaps at me, "Those things aren't accurate." At this point, this whole situation just becomes totally weird. I said, "Well, I don't know about that, I'm just tying to explain to you why he's scared." He's continuing to evade her and keep her from getting under his arm, and she's clearly determined and getting frustrated. Then she looks up at me, having only seen my son in the office for his well-child exam with no findings, and says "This behavior is not at all normal for a 5-year old. You are going to have a lot of problems with him when he starts school." Now it goes from weird to just surreal. I was completely shocked that she would: 1) make a diagnosis of a behavioral disorder while wrestling my son and 2) speak like that in front a a child. I was completely taken aback, and I said, "He's been in preschool for 2 years and has never had any behavior problems." Then she said, "Well, I'm surprised by that. He should not be acting like this at his age." I really wanted to just grab my kid and run, but I was also worried about this tick bite and unexplained fever. He sobbed the entire time, and I was on the verge of tears as she prescribed an antibiotic for possible Lyme disease exposure. I couldn't wait to get out of there. When the nurse brought out his preschool form to us in the lobby, I was in tears and told her we would never be coming back. She shrugged. The worst part was, as we were driving home, my son said, "Mama, I would never kick at my teacher. That doctor just scared me." I feel so guilty having subjected my child to such an unprofessional physician like Dr. Jobes. Avoid this practice at all costs. BTW, my son is in second grade now and has never had any behavior issues at school. She's just a terrible doctor and should not be treating children. read more
