We found the welcoming yellow door of Good Grocer as we got into the heart of town & happily found that they stocked every single thing we needed ... and nothing we didn't! They had a wide variety of things neatly packed into a small (CLEAN!!) space & they couldn't have been friendlier. We visited a few times over the weekend, thankful for their hours of operation. Each time, everyone was super friendly & helpful. Every product we purchased was super fresh, which speaks to how quickly stock is rotated. Our favorite thing was the fresh rotisserie chicken! Oh my gosh, Costco could NEVER!!! We loved it so much we came back twice for more & now that we're home almost 2 weeks, we've talked about it several times LOL I can go on & on about all the good things about Good Grocer, but you should check it out for yourself if you ever find yourself in the area because it is a gem!

For example, at this time of year, a new 4 lb. bag of Yukon Gold or yellow potatoes should look fresh, thinner-skinned and relatively clean (we bought one last week that was like this). Instead, the Price Chopper organization or store personnel are bagging or re-bagging older potatoes in with the new. In one four pound bag purchased yesterday, I found two older-looking potatoes with thick dark brown skins instead of the much paler, yellowy skin of new potatoes associated with this time of year. Other complaints include packing chicken in primarily larger packages instead of offering what used to be a wonderful selection of both small and large packages. Also, no sell by dates on containers of chicken livers (I called the store about this). The Price Chopper organization, in an effort to control prices lacks properly supervised and trained food department personnel. It is certainly displeasing long-time customers.

Was making a dish tonight, had my sauce all prepared, opened up the package of chicken and started to put the chicken thighs in when the most grotesque odor hit my nose that I nearly threw up. The chicken was absolutely beyond rotten. I check every date on anything I buy at that store because I've ended up with dozens and dozens of spoiled product. I didn't know you actually had to unwrap the chicken to smell it now too! Of course, all this resulted to me having to remake the sauce, which cost me more money and time, and had to go back to that miserable store and get the chicken replaced. Did they offer to cover the cost of the other ingredients I lost because of the spoiled chicken? Of course not they just hand me back my $8.52 from the spoiled package of chicken. I wish I could give this place negative stars and avoid it 100% but sadly they're the only grocery store within 20 miles and they print money because of the tourists so they have zero motivation to change or get better. Even if you go with the pre-cut choices already in their butcher case, the variety is vast and the prices can't be beat. The same can be said for their full-service fresh fish station and deli department. And their produce section (with lots of organic) is equally impressive. The overall prices here are very reasonable, with weekly specials and coupon savings that make it even better. There was some local chatter a couple of years back, when a Wal-Mart opened directly across the street from this Price Chopper location, that customers might go shopping there instead for their groceries, but this store has not experienced a dip in sales whatsoever, attesting to the quality and personalized service available here that customers favor. They are also open 24hrs, which may not impress you if you're a NYC dweller like me, but in this town, they roll the sidewalks in at 5 pm (the only thing opened on Sundays up there is the church...oh, and that dreadful Walmart...bleh) so an all-night grocery store is practically a mirage. Price Chopper is also very community-minded and philanthropic, always the first to respond to the charitable needs of the town and county. They often sponsor community health fairs, school-related activities for children, sweepstakes, contests, and giveaways. They once held a very well publicized hotdog-eating contest that attracted large eaters from across the state, including The Hub, who eagerly signed up. I am...ahem...proud to say that, after following my husband in a groupie-like manner all summer long - complete with family and friends in tow - I watched him win every contest all the way up to the finals. So I am now officially the wife of the hotdog-eating champion of the Hudson Valley, thanks to Price Chopper. At least there were no beans involved. So shop at Price Chopper next time you're in Catskill. And go easy on the hotdogs.
