My father passed away and we were not prepared. Melody and the staff of Lewis Chapel were amazing…read moreto us. There was care, understanding, and attention to detail. My father was buried with military honors and they handled all of the arrangements to make that happen. They actually brought some life to a terrible day and took great care of us. I cannot say thank you enough.

I would give no stars if I could…read more This funeral home is severely lacking with customer care. When we walked in for our very first viewing of our loved one since his unexpected death the office manager came out, looked at us with a look on her face like she was confused by our presence, and asked in a very rude voice if she could help us. She left to bring in the funeral director who looked very professional but her voice was way too upbeat for the situation. She did NOT prepare us for what we were going to see or inform us what procedures or other preparations were done prior to our arrival. We walked in to the room and he is laying on a gurney. A gurney. Not a coffin or legit table. He was an organ donor so the hospital had harvested some long bones which is awesome he was able to help other people in need. What was irritating was the funeral home did nothing to make the body look normal, he was very obviously a lot shorter on the GURNEY than he was in life. The funeral home has no sitting area where family members could take a break or wait for people in the viewing room. No water and coffee for people. There were a couple of chairs in the hallway where everybody can walk by (and through) your party and watch you as they're coming in the front door. There was very little privacy. Somebody also came in while we were in the viewing room and asked us if we were ok (in an in appropriately upbeat voice again). It was just terrible. If you want a better experience, any death is hard enough you don't need the stress of insensitive jerks, then I recommend Rill Chapel's Life Trubute Center in Port Orchard.

Buyer beware!!! We wanted to do a pre-plan so our kids wouldn't ever have to worry about anything…read morewhen we passed away. We made this very clear to the representative who helped us. She was nice enough, and had very good risk communications skills. However, apparently she was new, and needed a lot more training. She gave us a bit of inaccurate information. I would recommend doing research before you go. We also were looking for a Cadillac burial plot- and we made that very clear. After all, we would be dead. We didn't care. After meeting with her, she gave us the total due. We specifically said, "is this all? We done want our kids to have to pay for anything." She gave us four things our kids had to pay for. Flowers, obituary, Priest, reception. We wrote down what she said, and she confirmed the list. We were told the prices would we going up, and we had to pay before the end of the month. We agreed, and set up an appointment for the next week. Unfortunately, we got a call that the Chapel had an immediate need and we needed to reschedule. It was the following month. We showed up, ready to pay, and we did. As we got ready to leave, she said that only our plot was paid for, and there were two more parts we had to pay for. What???!??!! That raised price from $12,000 to $25,000. Sorry, I am not gonna spend that much to be buried. Found something more affordable. Make sure you look around unless you don't care. I feel bad for those that don't have the time to shop around because they have an immediate need. Be careful.

St Mary Star of the Sea

I suppose that this review really should be for the Rainshadow Chorale and Orchestra. The group…read more performed Bach's Magnificat and Cantata No.140 in the sanctuary of St. Mary's on Thursday, Nov. 17th and it was a wonderful evening. I was in the audience. I suppose that this review really should be about the high quality of the all-volunteer chorus and the professional (but local) musicians who accompanied them. It would be appropriate to note that this was Rainshadow's official Fall 2011 performance and that the music soared into the church's rafters with nary a dissonant note. The performance was truly celestial but I'll let you read more about it on the organization's website: http://www.rainshadowchorale.org . That being said, this review is really about the church because the building, and its ministry is rather a surprise. At least to me, anyhoo... St. Mary Star of the Sea is located a block from the Port Townsend Public Library. It's a one-story red brick building which occupies a city block and has a large parking lot. The parish does not (as far as I can tell) host a parochial school and yet the site would have been the perfect location for such a school, had one been started. The church's website, www.stmaryss.com tells all the sordid (but ultimately uplifting) details. The reader will learn that such a school was planned for the location, that an early church housekeeper, who was vehemently anti-Catholic, totally impoverished the parish, selling off all of the church's contents including the baptismal font. The reader will also learn that a later housekeeper willed a considerable amount of money to the church to restore it. The present building has soaring ceilings, a beautifully carved wooden crucifix and lovely Stations of the Cross on the perimeter walls. It has to be one of the more airy, uplifting, modern churches that I''ve been in. The congregation (and present pastor) seem to also be welcoming inclusve, witness the use of the sanctuary for the Rainshadow concert... I enjoyed a wonderful musical evening, felt at home and once again marveled at the amazing artistic life of Port Townsend. Just as the all-Bach performance fit beautifully into its setting, so does St. Mary's, which is perhaps the only Catholic church in Puget Sound, fit into the Port Townsend community.
