I've been going to Chengs Garden for some time. I believe the food is very good, above average compared to other Chinese food places. As an added benefit they're one of the few Chinese restaurants around where you can actually dine in a nice atmosphere if you're inclined. Picked up take out. The woman at the front was pleasant. The hot and sour soup was pretty standard, no complaints there. The yang chow fried rice was a fun change from your typical fried rice containing multiple protein options (chicken, shrimp and pork). The kung pao chicken was a disappointment. I'm used to getting chunks of white meat chicken in this dish, but I'm not sure what cut they used. The flavor also didn't seem to be typical. As a Chinese American from the old capital city of Beijing, I have always over looked American Chinese food in search of truly authentic Chinese restaurants. I've been to Cheng's garden many times but never left a review, as I felt that it was good but unfortunately, not authentic. Guess what? Neither am I, sort of a wake up call moment when I passed 30 years living in America & had just realized I am no where near being authentic Chinese to pass my judgments. I am more American than Chinese, maybe at most 50:50. When I dropped my bias, & started to enjoy Cheng on a weekly basis, I realized how good Cheng actually is. The food is always clean & crisp, not greasy, not heavy, not overly complex in flavoring. The taste for the signature dishes such as beef broccoli, chicken & shrimp combo, Mongolian beef etc. are delicious and consistent. The hot & sour soup has always been awesomely spot on. Based on the reviews I was a little iffy to try this place. But the place didn't disappoint. I went flduring lunch hours so ordered off the lunch menu. Which comes with your choice of 3 different soups, an egg roll, and rice. The portions are large, if I was headed home after eating, I would have taken the leftovers home. I got the general chicken. The menu said it was spicy, however I didn't taste any spice to the chicken. And also ordered the fried rice. Not sure if they use msg in the food. If they do, I didn't taste it. I went for the first time thinking this place has be around for a long time. So I said I'll try it. Walked in looked over the menu. Saw that it was lunchtime. So I ordered a beef and broccoli. With pork fried rice and an egg roll. So I thought let me try their chicken Loman. So I ordered that also. Waited patiently. Just to get to my truck. And that's when I found out. A. There was nothing in my pork fried rice. Then moved on to the egg roll as hard as a rock. The beef was chewy and the broccoli was just taken out of the bag. Then there's the chicken loman that literally no taste at all. So I went back in to voice my concerns. She just looked at me like was crazy. And she said that's how we always make it. So my response as I was walking out is. I'll just feed it the birds. And walked out. With no response. Never asked me if I'd like to try something else. But after spending my last 20 bucks on lunch. We really like this little restaurant and haven't been here since pre covid days. They closed down for over a year and we just finally returned to visit. The food has always been very good here and fairly priced. The waiting staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The only downside in my last review was that when you were seated at your table your tea cups would be placed directly on the table.... Upside down. This always bothered us for obvious reasons. I don't know if they read my last review or if covid has changed their ways but we were pleasantly surprised to see they weren't doing the upside down cup thing anymore. We ordered the mango chicken which isn't something we normally order. It was well prepared but way too sweet for my taste buds. The Shanghai spring rolls and sweet and sour soup were very good. We like the location because it's very near the cinemax theaters in the mall so it makes for a nice night out. Also Costco is there too so a quick gas up and a couple huge boxes at Costco. We have been trying to find a go to Chinese restaurant in Enfield area for a while, none have been up to our expectations. A little hesitant based up the rating but decided to try Cheng's. We were very pleased! The General Gau's (aka Tso's) was nicely fried, and tender with no fat, nice size pieces and good quantity for a combo. The fried rice was very tasty and fresh. The egg roll was the best we have had in a long time, perfectly cooked not too crunchy, filling was equally fresh and tasteful. Also, had Shrimp mein fun, my wife loved it and said it was very good, with 6 tender shrimp. Her complaint was lack of shrimp, expected 10-12. Boneless Ribs were also good but fatty as are typical when ordered as side. Close to 5 stars, but only 4 due to quantity of shrimp in dish. We will back Update February 15, 2020: Creatures if habit we ordered the same dishes. Unlike last time the shrimp mein fun had plenty of shrimp 10-13 as expected (maybe they read this and improved or the past visit in Dec. was a fluke. Either was a very enjoyable take out meal. Nor ribs this time, the General Gau's combo was very good with so much food I couldn't finish it all, tender chicken, very good fried rice and nice fried egg roll. This is the best Chinese food restaurant in Western Ma/Northwestern CT! For 30 years I've been searching for the best spot and I can't believe I've missed this place. Until now. We ordered the pupu for 3 and PFR. Everything was cooked to perfection. Chicken fingers were golden delicious. Best beef teriyaki and boneless ribs I've ever had. The PFR was phenomenal. Very clean and the ambiance was great. Service was fantastic! The waitress was very engaging with our one year old son and he absolutely loved the food as well! Had a good experience the other night at Cheng's. People were sat according to social distancing guidelines and there were lots of safety signs and sanitizer available. The staff members were all very friendly and their service was incredibly fast. The food came out hot, fresh and was very tasty and incredibly fairly priced for the portion provided. So I had been there 20 years ago and the food was great. My sister and I went there last weekend and it was a mix review. The fried wonton strips that come with the duck sauce were disgusting and impossible to eat which I relayed to the waitress and she laughed. Now I understand why she asked at the beginning if we wanted them with duck sauce. Seriously a hard no to these, they were inedible even after soaking them in the wonton soup broth. We try to scope out a great Chinese restaurant wherever we end up living. We hadn't found one in Enfield yet--until we were hungry for delivery one night (you know those sitcoms always have someone ordering Chinese delivery). We asked Mr. Google, and located Cheng's Garden, so sight unseen, we ordered and they don't even charge for delivery. Evidently, they were awarded one of Top 100 Chinese Restaurants in 2008--who knew? Wow. We were very happy with our moo shi pork and steamed dumplings, ordered from the on-line menu. We thought it only fair to visit the actual place a couple of weeks later, and ordered sesame beef and crispy five-flavor shrimp in tangerine sauce, and dry cooked string beans. All were excellent--well prepared, served with a friendly smile, and delicious. We probably won't order both together again, since fried foods are not our usual--but we enjoyed every bite. The string beans were excellent, and the sauces sweet goodness. One of the owners is May Zhu, which tells us this is authentic food. Happy we found them, for visits and delivery. Got takeout from here the other day and it was really not great.. We ordered a couple of combination meals (general tso and chow mein) and steamed dumplings. General tso was okay, really saucy. The chow mein was just bad. It had an unidentifiable 'funky' flavor to it and the sauce was too thin and not flavorful. The pork fried rice was dry and also not flavorful. Known for it's oddly named entree "Strange Flavour Chicken" (which, incidentally, I have not been brave enough to try - how strange is it really????), Cheng's is located in an unassuming strip mall in Enfield. Walking in you have a very ornate front of the restaurant, complete with a massive carved archway. It is very cool. But for some reason, the dining area is awful and sterile, with white walls, booths, and terrible lighting. It is not clear why the two areas are so vastly different. Service is spotty when dining in, it is really hit and miss as to whether you will get paid attention to or not. So get take out, they are pretty prompt and on the ball in that department. As for the food, it is probably as good as you are going to get in this area of Connecticut, but not terribly authentic. My favourite are the egg rolls, which come two to an order and are huge. This WAS my favorite Asian restaurant in the area until they up-charged 15% on all menu items and added a 4% surcharge for credit card usage (after you pay the bill). It was actually over the declared 15%. Even if I wanted to order from Cheng's in the future, my wife wouldn't let me in the house. I used to laugh at their disinterest when I've complained about their funny price changes. The lady at the front would give me that vacant look like they had a money printing machine in the kitchen or that their Pier 1 customers kept them rolling in the dough. We decided to dine in on a Friday evening and while the staff were very busy covering the take--out and restaurant service, they were very friendly and warm and the service was excellent. Im giving five starts because if im being honest, I've never had a chinese take out or dine in meal that I would recommend or brag about. Most places are terrible or just ok. But Cheng's Garden is my favorite. I came across this place because I work near by. Coworkers have had mixed reviews, many enjoy and others do not. But I do, and heres why. They are quick, if you pick up take out it usually ready within 20 mins, delivery is also quick and always hot. there is no delivery fee, just a minimum. I have dined in for lunch on several occasions. The service is good, they are quick and attentive. They have a very fairly priced lunch menu with smaller portions which is good to me because who needs a big huge platter they cant or shouldnt dare finish at 12:30 in the afternoon? lol The restaurant is clean. many places look like you can wipe grease off of the walls and you wouldn't ever want to sit down. But chengs garden has a welcoming environment and is tidy. I enjoy the general tao chicken which is usually cripsy (HEART eyes) and made with bell peppers. Mixed reviews, someone people have told me that dont like this, but i LOVE IT! The beef and broccoli, chicken fingers, and beef teriyaki sticks are also a favorite. read more

Literally and figuratively, this place left a very very bad taste in my mouth, and I'm not that picky about restaurants or customer service. I will say this - the pan-fried dumplings were fine. But all of the food took forever to come out even though the restaurant was half-empty, and our tofu entree came out with this awful sticky red sauce all over it. I had clearly asked for "Family-Style Bean Curd" and even pointed it out on the menu, and I had never gotten anything like the dish we were served. But my daughter and I ate about half of it anyway because by then we were starving ... When the bill came, the dish was listed as "General Gau's chicken" with tofu substituted for the meat. I have no idea how the waitress interpreted what I asked for as that. When I pointed out the error, both the waitresses and the owner blamed me for the mistake, and then they just did their best to ignore me. Maybe they were paranoid that I wasn't going to pay the bill (which was unfounded) but I just wanted to bring the mistake to their attention and nobody even bothered to offer an apology - they were just completely defensive and borderline obnoxious!! To be fair to the server, it seemed like her English was way subpar, but then why was she taking orders??? They were just extremely rude, and even if the food was exceptional (which it most certainly was not!!) I would never ever go back to this place. There is just a dirth of Asian cuisine in this area, so I was skeptical about the restaurant's authenticity. To my surprise, the food was pretty good and the interior of the restaurant is elegant and presentable. I believe my husband and I ordered the "Happy Family" to go with two orders of rice. The entree is a hodge-podge of seafood and protein mixed in brown sauce so it was tasty but unfortunately, I was not sold on the prices as I am accustomed to a lower price-range for Chinese cuisine. read more

Every element of the meal was perfect. Timely, friendly service, good prices, everything was piping hit and perfectly cooked, I couldn't ask for any more.
