She had heard of this dude from some friends, and since my mother and I are very much into eating, drinking, and being merry, this was a perfect present. According to his press packet, we had the choice of hosting a dinner party, taking private culinary classes with Chris (knife skills, learning basic sauces, creating a meal step by step right beside him), or having him prepare us a series of meals for the week that he will package up and be ready for heating whenever we wanted. We didn't get around to scheduling something with Chris until November 2010. We decided to do a simple dinner party. Chris was super-easy to work with regarding scheduling, and then went over and above the necessary service in designing the perfect menu for our party of five. Despite a shellfish allergy, a nut allergy, one guy who doesn't eat most vegetables, and a mushroom hater -- he put together a menu that made all five of our mouths water. On the day of the party, he arrived at my mother's house three hours early to prep. At first, because she has an open kitchen, dining room, and living room set-up I thought it was going to be weird to have Chris cooking and all of us lounging around, chatting about everything from can-can dance to cancer, and drinking in his earshot. Chris was personable, chill, and really easy to talk to PLUS he was a total ninja in the kitchen and prepared a four-course meal from scratch without so much as a clang of a pan.
