This restaurant has a serious identify crisis. Instead of specializing in one Asian cuisine, it…read moretries to appeal to the masses by offering up cuisines of FOUR Asian countries. We found this place on the way from the Montreux train station to our hotel. There was a hand written chalkboard outside the door in Chinese with the "Specials" that caught my eye. One of the specials is something I have been sorely missing....Peking noodles with meat sauce, a comfort food that I grew up with. My yearning for my mom's home cooking led me to overlook all the red flags including but not limited to the name of the restaurant, a big sign in Chinese that says "China Fuji Restaurant". In my heart I knew eating there wouldn't be a good idea. After checking into the hotel and a quick search on Yelp yielded no other Chinese restaurants in the nearby vicinity, I went against my better judgement (and my husband's protest) and hoofed back to this abomination of a restaurant. First off, the Mandarin speaking Chinese host/waiter/possibly owner of the restaurant tossed the menus in front of us instead of handing them to us, which was a bit annoying to start off with. Since we were all in the mood for noodles, I ordered 3 stables from the "Chinese section" after pouring over the unnecessarily excessive menu. Chicken fried noodles for my not so adventurous Swiss mother in law; Beef chow fun for my slightly more adventurous Swiss husband; and the eagerly anticipated Peking noodles with meat sauce....por moi! The wait wasn't long albeit there were almost no other patrons in sight. When I saw the food my heart dropped a little. When I tasted my eagerly awaited dish my heart sank under my chair. There was almost no taste to what's suppose to be the pungent sweet and salty flavorful sauce that I'm accustomed to. To add insult to injury, the noodles they used was completely the wrong type of noodle. I can't believe they had the audacity to put this popular traditional Northern Chinese favorite as a "Special" on the chalkboard if this is the rubbish they are serving up. Not surprisingly, the Chicken fried noodles and Beef Chow Fun wasn't much better either. The latter had slightly more resemblance to what it's suppose to taste like than the former. The price was not expensive for Swiss standards, around 50.- for all three entrees. Nonetheless really not worth it! As far as authenticity goes, this restaurant has a looong way to go although I highly doubt it'll ever get there!

Now we eat Chinese for more than half of the Zermatt dinners! I have literally been to dinner at China Garden over 30 times - the food is just amazing and flavorful and there are real actual spicy dishes. The chefs are all from China and are quite professional! My favorites are the Szechwan Beef, Spicy Asparagus, dry string beans, Duck, and Mongolian Lamb. They are all wonderful.

The egg-roll while tiny (two bites per egg-roll), came with three sauces which was cool. Outdoor seating was available and there were heat lamps making it cozy. They brought out braziers with candles for ambiance and to keep the food warm. Our nephew was under dressed for the weather and the waitress offered him a blanket. Cons: It was very expensive. I understand Switzerland is expensive. I understand Zermatt in particular is expensive. I know the dollar is not worth as much these days. But we paid over $70 per person which included one entree each, 1 and 1/3 egg-roll per person, an order of noodles split three ways and two beers. Worse, the portions were on the small side and we left hungry seeking dessert elsewhere. Also, and this was no fault of the restaurant, but Switzerland allows smoking outdoors, so towards the end of our meal, another patron came outside to smoke, and that really put a damper on the end of our meal since that's all we could smell.
