I initially spoke to Brandy over the phone and set up an appointment for her too see our space and discuss menu options. She brought along her assistant, Mia who would be our server/coordinator for the evening. They were prepared, professional, detailed oriented and helped us consider all our options including when to serve, what to serve and how much at what time. They had all the answers. Brandy was great communicating details before our event and on the day of the event Mia showed up exactly as planned. What an asset Mia is, her timing was perfect, she kept our kitchen organized and great food was plentiful at all times. Frankly Mia was so good that I didn't even notice she was around until after all our guests left and our kitchen was spotless. They needed to crank up the temperature just a wee bit. They also ran out of Thai tea. We ordered 5 but they only had enough to make 1. While it's popular as a wedding venue, it's also fascinating to see many of the rooms with Victorian furniture and decoration, not to mention the beautiful architectural details. From the back of the building at the privately fenced parking lot the property is quite imposing with massive buttressed limestone walls that stretch upwards many stories giving it the feel of a castle almost. After a ride in a small elevator you can see the level with a large ballroom, dining room, large outdoor patio that's sunken from the street and private but quite nice in good weather. The next level is street level from the front of the house and has beautifully furnished living room with gorgeously carved pocket doors, stained glass entryway, intricately carved wood decorated staircase leading upwards to the bedrooms. Each has antique furnishings, fireplaces with painted tiles, and more room for entertaining on the spacious wraparound balconies that give views of how much Austin has changed. While I'm not clear on how much of the property is open to the public at weddings or other events, it's well worth the chance to see inside if you ever get the opportunity.

We launched from Emma Long Metropolitan Park and paddled about 7 miles along the Colorado River, passing stunning waterfront mansions and even a hidden, slightly eerie, dilapidated mock Renaissance village near the Pennybacker (360) Bridge. It was the epitome of Keeping Austin Weird! The adventure had a wild moment when we paddled down Bull Creek and encountered a very territorial swan guarding its nest. It charged several of us, we paddled faster than we planned. It was thrilling and hilarious. We paddled up to the The County Line on the Lake, where 16 of us exited our kayaks, ready to eat. They knew we were coming so our table set up ahead of time, which made a huge difference for a group our size. Service was quick, organized, and friendly. I ordered the ribs with a baked potato, coleslaw, and their fresh made bread, everything was spot on. The portions are generous, even ordering from the lunch menu, and I ended up taking leftovers home. This paddle has become a yearly tradition for us, rain or shine, and ending it here is part of what makes it so memorable. If you're kayaking in the area, stopping at The County Line on the Lake is an easy yes for good food, cold drinks, and a great place to relax. They even have outside seating so you can enjoy the river on milder days. They also have ample parking for cars.
