Chef Chen really surprised me in the best way! The restaurant itself is definitely older -- the furniture and decor could use a little updating -- but honestly, the food makes up for it. Everything we ordered came out hot, fresh, and so flavorful. It's one of those spots where the looks might fool you, but the kitchen is doing what needs to be done. And the prices? Super affordable, which is always a win. What really made my visit special was the owners. They were so sweet to my toddler and interacted with him the whole time. You don't get that type of genuine attention everywhere, and as a mom, that meant a lot to me. It made the experience feel warm and personal. I'm giving it 4 stars only because the place is a little old and could use some love when it comes to decor and furniture. But the food, service, and the way they treated my baby? Chinese food has lost it's authenticity. The food was delicious at their former location where they focused exclusively on Chinese food. Chefs I observed were of other ethnicities at the current location....which is why the food is not as good anymore. We absolutely love the food and management here. The portions are plentiful, fresh and reasonably priced. I can typically have enough leftover for food for the lunch the next day. The restaurant does quite a bit of takeout and there's a nice dine in option as well. My go to depending upon my mood is either the sesame chicken or the spa steamed shrimp with broccoli. We love Chef Chen! Have been going here for years for takeout. The staff is wonderful, the food is good at a reasonable price, and for the most part the quality is pretty consistent. Our go-tos are: egg rolls, egg drop soup, wings, lo mein, moo goo gai pan, tso's chicken, mongolian beef, steamed vegetables. My friends/colleagues talked me into trying Chef Chen. My expectations weren't very high. I thought I would just get something basic because I was more so happy to hangout with my friends. To my surprise, the food was delicious and the service is amazing! I now go there once a week but shortly after the first visit I was going every 3 days. I've ordered from this place pre-Covid, and really enjoyed their food. However today I have to rate them a 1 star because there is hair in my food. My child was eating her broccoli when she noticed long pieces of black hair on her plate. I took a picture of one still wrapped around the broccoli. Ok I dropped in here with a friend for a quick bite on 1/6/18 upon the urging of another friend. Restaurant is very clean and set up very comfortably. Parking is excellent as well no problems there. I ordered chicken wings and chicken fried rice but chose to start with won ton soup. Their won ton is far from traditional there are no ingredients wrapped up in a tasty noodle it's all the ingredients along with some extras. In addition to the broth there is shrimp, seaweed, and cabbage, also some chicken. It wasn't really my cup of tea as I like a more traditional won ton. The fried chicken was excellent and chicken fried rice was ok. Yes just ok to me. But the tangerine chicken is slamming. It's a definite must try. I am on, what appears to be, a never ending quest for decent Chinese. I am routinely confused by how mediocre Chinese places are. Perhaps I don't understand the value position in the marketplace and their struggle to hit price points that the savage masses will find compelling enough to drag them in for some trial and no-repeat. Marketing talk gets me excited. But enough about my routine disappointment...at least for today. For today, I tried Chef Chen, an establishment in an unassuming strip mall of the decidedly un-sexy S.Cobb Drive. I had hot and sour soup, which was a nice portion size and was just the correct thickness. I sampled the steamed Pot Stickers...which contained a nice meat and onion filling. The dipping sauce was not too sweet and made a lovely accompaniment. For lunch I chose the Shrimp special which was served with an egg-roll (Chicken filled) and fried rice. All very good. It was flavorful and I believe actually cooked to order as the food did not flow out of the kitchen as though there was a hidden buffet back there. Relative to other places I have tried I am a fan of Chef Chen. I ordered some food on New Year's Eve and it was horrible. I have ordered from this establishment before. The food was tolerable but this will be the last time that I order from them. I ordered house fried rice and lemon pepper wings. The rice was stale and the peas that were in the mixture were dried and old. The lemon pepper wings were fried in old grease. I do not know if they were too busy or not busy enough but it was really really bad! Hopefully they will do better checking of the food before they send it out. First things first, this is a very clean establishment and it shows in the preparation of foods! For me thats a huge + for chinese dining. Some places are so unkept ( although they still may turn out a decent meal). Chef Chen delivers more than a decent meal, the food is really fresh tasting without all that dark colored rice and dark sauces. I ordered a chicken fried rice with only sprouts, egg, onion and of course chicken along with a side of fried potstickers. I was just next door at a pet shop with my little one:-) The food was ready in 15 mins. I had read some great reviews about Chef Chen and they have a competitor up the street ( I'll allow you to figure that out:-) Well in my opinion the competitor has NOTHING on Chef Chen with the fresh prep, clean facility and nice staff. Another important note, most chinese restaurants have the "distinctive" aroma ( for lack of a not so pleasant term)...Chef Chen does not! I even had to leave my food in the car for about 30 mins while I continued shopping with my dog. When we returned to the car, yes I could smell the food BUT it wasn't soo overwhelming like it usually is. I am persnickety about most things and moreso with chinese food..so when I tell you THIS is the place ( in Cobb) to dine....take my word and the obvious word of a few other seasoned Yelper's. You also get the usual large portion for the buck.
