Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with Cheddar's. I was looking for good food in Iowa City, and this place was highly ranked with solid reviews, so expectations were high. The ambiance was very nice with a large fish tank and cozy booth seating. Service was excellent--both the host and our waitress were very attentive and welcoming. The food, however, was where things fell short. I ordered the lemon pepper chicken with broccoli casserole and mashed potatoes. My father had chicken tenders, shrimp, and a loaded baked potato. He really enjoyed the potato and tenders, but said the shrimp was a definite skip. My broccoli casserole was extremely bland, the rice bed had uncooked crunchy pieces, and the mashed potatoes were just okay. The chicken itself was decent in flavor but unfortunately undercooked--still pink in the center. I didn't send it back but definitely should have. Relatively quiet at 5:00 on a Tuesday. Prompt and attentive service. The free croissant was an excellent start. My order, ribs and two veggies. All good. Ribs not really "fall off the bone" but they were tender, flavorful and very meaty! 6 bones and lots there. Veggies were "southern" cooked--pretty soft and sweet. A good accompaniment. Came here on the Darden gift card, which apparently owns Olive Garden, cheddars Longhorn steak, yardhouse and some others. I started with the Wisconsin cheese, curds and ranch. I followed that up with the cheddars trio sampler which comes with chicken tenders, spinach dip, and homemade queso and chips. I like the Olive Garden and I also love the Yardhouse and cheddar scratches as I love the of those takes on the chain restaurants but not as well known and still providing quality food. They focus on comfort food (chiven biscuits and gravy type fare) and the quality is equal to cheesecake factory in my opinion. All in all the price came to over $20 bucks for Wisconsin cheese curds and the sampler platters rig tenders, spinach dip and chips and their yellow queso sauce. I dined in with my brother. The sauce from my shrimp alfredo wasn't creamy. I have been here on multiple occasions and treated my brother because it was his first time. We had not been to Cheddar's in a long time. I had forgotten why so we tried it once more. First, the menu is very limited unless one wants red meat, ok, our problem. However, there were only 3 chicken choices, no plant based choice, no vegetarian choice unless one orders one of only 2 salads choices without protein. I ordered Caeser Salad with Chicken and asked for NO CHEESE! Salad came with cheese. I asked the waiter to take it back. He was very nice about the mistake and took it back. The new salad didn't have the shaved Parmesan but was drowning in salad dressing that was loaded with cheese; didn't tell me there was cheese in the dressing (I guess I should have realized that) or ask if I wanted another dressing. By the time we got my 2nd salad my partner was done eating so I asked for a to-go box and we left. I felt like going into the kitchen and asking the cook staff if they knew what ingredients were in the different dishes on the menu. I won't be back anytime soon, if ever. Assistant manager when confronted, got upset and threatened to call the police that I and my 78-year-old mother where dine and dash customers, after cancelling the charge but stated she couldn't re-comp the burger again. When pressed about this issue, she crumpled up a piece of paper she was holding threw it on the counter turned and walked away saying "goodbye." This restaurant has been around a while. I like it! The Wisconsin cheese curds are fire! I love them a lot. The kids mac and cheese? Good, but parm on top ruins it. Based on the variety of reviews posted here I had low expectations headed into Cheddars. It was a halfway meeting point for us to connect with a relative, and easy access to the Interstate, so that's how we ended up here. When we arrived a bit before noon on Saturday. there were about 30 people waiting inside and outside for a table. Yikes! This was not what I expected, but the wait was only about 15 minutes. We got sat down and our server brought a basket of very tasty frosted croissants for us to munch on while we looked over the menu. There is a lot to choose from and the prices are reasonable. I got the Lemon Pepper Chicken, a fairly healthy choice, and went with green beans and mashed potatoes for sides. It was a good-sized portion, so I had enough chicken for a meal plus some of the next day's lunch. The beans were just OK, and the potatoes were skin on and had a bit of gravy-very tasty. My wife got the Key West Chicken and Shrimp - another healthier option, and went with broccoli and carrots for her sides. The meat/fish was nicely flavored, and the veggies were well prepared. Our other diner went with the Smokehouse Burger, which he said was fine, but nothing remarkable (or bad!). Fries were pretty standard, but OK as well. Our server seemed a bit tentative, but was friendly and took good care of us. Our food came out very quickly, which was a bit surprising considering there was a line the whole 2 hours we were there. You pay via the tablet on the table, which I reallly like as you can do it all yourself and add your tip, get your receipt, and be on your way without surrendering your credit card for a mystery trip. The server takes cash if you choose to pay with that. I was pleasantly surprised that we got a tasty lunch, at a very reasonable price, and with quick service. Not a really good restaurant it was when known as Cheddar's. I think the scratch kitchen is a misnomer. From dinner for two this early evening, there wasn't much right about it except the price. That should have been our first clue! I noticed my husband's meatloaf edges looked burnt and dried out. Firat out my salad came out smothered in shredded cheese, when I lifted the dressing cup to pour it I noticed a long hair that was folded in half that I pulled from the middle! It went back when the manager came by our table. My fried shrimp was good but the coating fell off most of it in the cocktail sauce. Solid place to get some American-style food. The menu is pretty expansive and should have taste for all kinds--the health conscious, the not-so health conscious, and everything in-between. While I've had several delicious entrees here, I personally recommend the vegetable plate. You get your choice of four side dishes and your choice of a bowl of soup or a side salad with your sides, all for $8. I think a bowl of soup is about $4 on its own--so its a pretty good deal. On my most recent visit, I selected the corn, steamed broccoli, loaded baked potato, and southern green beans. You can also add a croissant if you choose to do so. The corn is delicious, but is also saturated in butter. My dining companion also had the corn with his meal and did not finish it. The southern green beans are large in size and are not your typical out-of-the-can variety. They also have onions in them. The loaded baked potato includes butter, sour cream, and cheese. Broccoli is pretty bland, but is probably the healthiest option of the sides. I would avoid sitting in the bar if at all possible--it always seems colder than the rest of the restaurant. read more

Tried 3 other times to go, but since not opening till 11 we left (baby doesn't like it when car is stopped to long) Would love it if opened by 10:30 instead. There were 3 of us who arrived here around 6:00 pm on a Monday night. the parking lot is huge and the restaurant is quite spacious inside. We were seated right away and our waitress brought our drinks shortly after. The menu has good variety, so you are sure to find something that sounds good. I ordered the baked spasagna (baked spaghetti). Our food came fairly quickly and there were very good portions. My baked spasagna was easily 2 dinners worth of food - maybe 3. As I cut into it, it had to have been at least 2 inches of noodles! For dessert we opted to get the 3 dessert shooters and since there were 3 of us, we each picked one. I had the key lime shooter. I've got a lot of food allergens and sensitivities so going to a restaurant is usually nerve wracking and I'm not usually able to get anything delicious. I was pleasantly surprised that they not only had a large selection of food that was safe for me (large gluten free menu) but it was also really delicious. I'm looking forward to going back and trying the many items on their menu that are safe (usually I'm only able to order 1 or 2 things at restaurants).
