The Mechanic Shop Teacher at Smoky Hill recommended this automotive shop so I had my 2003 Toyota RAV4 brought in because I thought the brakes needed replaced, boy what a mistake! I was not told that there would be a Diagnostic Fee which ended up being $75.48, Paul, the service representative whom I spoke with told me my vehicle needed over $1500 worth of work and when I mentioned that this amount was more that the vehicle was worth he was rude and told me to "either fix the car or replace it" and the quote I received was higher than other shops for the same service. What I don't get is why I was not told about the Diagnostic Fee and got stuck paying it to retrieve my vehicle, why the Shop Teacher thought Checkpoint was so great and why Paul didn't just break down the amount for the brakes but instead tried to upsell me for all this additional work! I took my car in for an oil change. My car went in working perfect and left over heating. I took it back to see what they may have done to cause this. They say it's the thermostat and it will be $700 to fix it and another $180 to diagnose it. I say it seems like they did something to cause this since it went in working fine and refused the work. When I went in Paul the manager was acting like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He was very rude and very uncooperative. Refused to stand by their work and said to never come back. I took my car to another shop and they said that one of the bolts in the thermostat housing had been removed and put in at an angle and severely over torqued causing my problems. He thought it was an accident at first from an inexperienced tech but after hearing the history said that it sounds more intentional but couldn't say for sure. Checkpoint Automative claims they never touched the cooling system to cause this damage and hung up on me. They obviously did touch my cooling system since they did a full car diagnostics (the $180 charge) and reported a bad thermostat and even stated that it wasn't passing fluid through the bottom hose. I can't prove that they either sabotaged my car for extra work or if they just broke it through inexperience or carelessness. I do know that it worked fine going in. I've never had a coolant system problem or even added coolant. It is a well cared for car with low miles. It left broken and they tried to over charge me. $110 for an oil change. $180 to diagnose what they broke. $700 to fix a thermostat that cost $375 at the shop that fixed it. They had to replace the whole housing since checkpoint did what they did with that bolt costing another $500 which they should be paying for. read more

We recently brought our car to Checkpoint when our brakes began to make noise. Checkpoint informed us that the calipers on our rear brakes had failed and worn down the brakes prematurely. They told us that it would cost $1,100 to repair. We then took the car to a reputable repair shop and paid $433 for the same work. We've been loyal customers of Checkpoint for many years, but that didn't stop them from attempting to overcharge by more than twice the amount. I had begun to grow suspicious of Checkpoint a year ago when they charged us $87 to replace a negative battery terminal cable. That cable is about a foot long and costs roughly $15 at an automotive store. The cable connects directly from the battery terminal to an easy-to-access point on the chassis where it is simply screwed down. Unfortunately, not knowing better, my wife okayed the work. It was something just about anybody could do for themselves in 10 minutes or less. My latest visit with them confirmed what I suspected. They have probably been overcharging us for years. Unless you have money to burn, take your vehicles elsewhere. I suspect that Checkpoint will reply to this review and spout some nonsense to defend themselves. Checkpoint knows that most of their customers don't know enough about their vehicles to dispute the ridiculous pricing, so they'll use that to their advantage. read more

Let me start by saying I'm very mechanically inclined and build cars and diesels often. I know my way around a wrench. Yesterday I took my Yukon to get it aligned by another shop. They proceeded to tell me I needed a laundry list of parts as well as tires. So I put new tires and wheels on, new breaks, new shocks, and new upper control arms on. The truck didn't necessarily need the parts as the other shop said but I did them anyway. I feel like the other shop just wanted to pay their overhead in me. Fast forward to this morning. I took my Yukon to Checkpoint, and they got it right in and got it aligned. The professional attitude, clean shop and punctuated response was excellent. When I have further needs I will definitely come back to these guys. read more

They failed to mention the price of labor for my Jeep service and I only approved for the price of the part needed. And because it was a different person I checked in the car to from when I picked it up, they didn't care the information wasn't consistent. The labor cost $160/hour costing me $320 just for the labor for an oil pan replacement. Are you kidding me?! If I knew the labor would cost this much I would not have approved the work, which they said I did. I did not. Never going here again. I suggest you ask them the cost of labor and have it in writing before you get screwed. NEVER GOING HERE AGAIN. read more

Our Jeep was at their shop for 3 weeks before they finally said they were unable to properly diagnose and repair the engine. I took it to another shop and it was repaired in 3 days. I wish they would have said from the start they were not capable of doing the work. read more

The team at Checkpoint has been my go-to team for over 12 years. In total, they have serviced 4 different vehicles I have owned, and although sometimes the services have been a tad pricey, the work has always been very thorough and high-quality. I recently purchased vehicle #5 about 3 weeks ago, so it will be some time before I need to visit Checkpoint again. I know that when I do, I will receive excellent service, as always. read more

I used to take all of my cars (and my family members cars there) for years. I always thought they were a bit pricey but did good work. A few years ago I was temporarily transferred to Utah. I took my car in to have it checked before the long drive there. There was a rattle in the front end and they said it had some front end issues and would be about 1000 dollars to fix. I passed on the work and drove to Utah. In Utah, when you register your car you have to have it safety inspected before you register it. I did and the shop there found the issue with the front end and long story short, it cost 300 dollars for the repair. Rattle stopped and car has been fine for the last few years. After that, we decided to take our cars elsewhere. Bottom line is for me is they do good work but charge way too much. read more

Sitting here with my two boys, I called to see if they could fit me in (while sitting in the lot) and they could. The staff is friendly, the waiting room is clean enough for a shop. The only thing that could have bugged me is the cloth chairs and the toys, which both seem grimy, but again, it's a shop and I chose to wait. I expect my oil change is going well, usually places take an hour so I'll update if I'm surprised either way. I chose checkpoint for its proximity, and they have an online coupon. Update: we ended up having a brake pad problem that called for new pads, rotor, & caliper. That cost just under $1,000 so instead of spending that much on an easy change, we got the parts from Napa and my husband and FIL fixed the problem... For around $300. I'm glad we came in for the oil change or we would not have known there was an issue. Next time, however, I'm making sure my husband listens to me when I tell him we need an oil change.. 3 months ago. Overall, impressed with the service, not the price tag. If we need an extra service done, I'm asking how the estimate was calculated out, parts, labor, profit, everything. I don't like the wool being pulled over my eyes. Big Plus: they took pictures to SHOW me what's happening to my car. That was a pleasant change from other shops. read more

The guys were nice enough... HOWEVER, when I specifically call to see if you will work on a VW and you tell me yes and give me a quote for the cost and timeframe of the appointment I expect accuracy. I went in after being told a transmission fluid flush on my VW was going to cost me $230. I did my due diligence and called around to several places and asked them if they worked on VWs (because not everyone will) and also asked them their prices for a particular service. The VW dealership quoted me $430 so I thought I was getting a deal! The guy on the phone told me the flush would take 3-3.5 hours. I dropped my car off a few days later at the scheduled time and was told they would call me when it was done. 4 hours later I get a phone call letting me know that they had JUST pulled my car into the garage and that the quote I was given was incorrect because on VWs they have to drain the transmission fluid differently than other cars... which I already knew.... which is why I called and specifically asked for a quote for a VW! The total cost came out to $378! - NEARLY AS MUCH AS THE DEALERSHIP!! The waitlist at any given shop for this kind of service is nearly a week out and I had already taken the day off of work so I told them to just do the job. Nearly 5 hours after I initially dropped off my car and spent $400 I got my car back and feel ripped off. I DEFWILL NOT BE BACK! UPDATE: The owner called me ONCE and left a message with attitude about how I left a review "on every outlet available to me" not exactly enticing to call back. I should mention that I told the person when I called the year, make, and model of the car and also mentioned that the reason I was asking is because not everyone works on it because it's not a normal flush. I had to schedule this appointment almost a week in advance and not allowing them to proceed would mean I would have had to wait another week to get into a different shop. While the cost was $52 cheaper it was not the $200 cheaper I was quoted and is not warrantied like it would be at the dealership. Bottom line - not a great experience. read more

I had a very trust worthy and honest mechanic where I lived before. After moving here a year ago, I had to take a leap of faith. I brought my Hyundai Elantra to Checkpoint today and believe that I have found another trustworthy and honest mechanic. They did what I asked (though they forgot my wipers, but that is ok) and reassured me all was "good to go". There was no pressure to have my brakes done and when I decided to do it, they immediately went to work. They even vacuumed out my car!!! What a bonus for someone like me. I feel quite comfortable with Checkpoint and would suggest you give them a try. read more

These guys will take care of you (and your cars.) Brought in a Ford Explorer and a Hyundai Sonata and they did a great job of looking over the cars and only doing the work that was required. The best part was that they went over and above what I expected and usually receive as far as customer service. They walked me through all the work they did and gave me their opinion about condition, cost, necessity and helped me understand what was happening with my autos. I'll go back. Feel free to shop around and you might find some of the chain stores with lower prices but you won't receive the kind of service and dedication (and expert knowledge) that you'll receive from Larry, Dean and Dan. I don't like the new staff. I was used to dealing with Larry, he gave me honest and detailed answers. Paul, the new guy at front desk, really wasn't very forthright, he kept cutting me off in the middle of my questions. I was having an oil burning and coolant loss issue with my Suburban while I was traveling. I had a dealership run pressure testing to find the issue--tests were all negative. The dealership performed an oil change and I drove back Colorado and checked the fluid levels at every fill up. Right before I reached Colorado, the low coolant level indicator came on and the oil level dipped some. When called Checkpoint and talked with Paul, I explained this to him. He said they would run a different test than the dealership but wasn't very forthcoming with the details. This test came back with the same negative results as the dealership. That test cost me $130. When Paul called back with the same negative results, he offered another test for $500. From my research on web, I these negative test results really narrow down possible issues all of which are very expensive to repair. Again, Paul didn't want give me much in the way of answers. Paul eluded to possible cracked cylinder head, worn rings, etc. But I couldn't pin him down on a potential repair cost possibilities. Larry was very good at answering these types of concerns. This vehicle is over 15 years old so I am hesitant to drop a lot of $'s the fix it. However, most maintained Suburban engines give 300k of reliable service before needing a major engine repair. When I asked Paul why a Suburban with less than 160k might have such a significant issue, he started give a lecture about regular maintenance, not knowing that that I had performed all maintenance items before the recommended intervals. His arrogant attitude really angered me to point I am looking at taking my truck to a new mechanic for the first time in 15 years. Paul claims the management hasn't changed but it sure feels like it has! UPDATE: Checkpoint sent me a text requesting a review. The review I left was a link to this review. The next day, Larry contacted me and provided me with the customer service of which I had become accustomed. I was satisfied with his explanation but not with his defense of Paul's behavior. This may have been uncharacteristic behavior for his employee but that doesn't change my experience. If this had been my only review of this business(all previous reviews were 5 stars on Google only), then I would change the overall rating. I think it is important to identify good honest businesses. To change my rating in this situation might send the wrong message. What happened to me on this day can't be undone. Overall, if you take your vehicle to Checkpoint, I believe your odds are really high in getting the same exceptional service I received in the past. I would advise anyone thinking of taking their vehicle to this establishment to be careful and get everything they plan to charge in writing before handing over the keys. They will charge outrageous prices for diagnostic testing, and "rags." If you are risky enough to take your car here, make sure to get everything they plan to do and charge you for in writing so they don't hold your car ransom while they charge you $1,000 for services that were not explained and not asked for. read more

I just needed repairs that would get my vehicle functioning for the winter. Instead of trying to upsell me they provided affordable options. So I have been taking my 3 cars to Checkpoint for years now. The previous owners really knew the value of a customer as they always did the right thing in putting the customer first. Yesterday was the last straw! I sent in my teenage daughter and they took advantage of her! Her message indicator every 3 months shows that the antifreeze is low. She also was taking it in for what I knew was a strut that needed to be replaced and an oil change. In our previous experiences here no problem in topping off the fluids with an oil change and replacing a bulb that was out all for no charge. After getting an upsetting phone call from my daughter that the mechanics were completely rude to her I had enough! $131.00 later for an oil change, which included a $50.00 charge to put the car up on the rack and look underneath! I wanted to support the local owner and being that it was convenient to the house it was great. Never again will I go here! read more

RIP OFF! Get a load of this. So I take my Toyota in for a check engine light. They call me an hour later to say it's the cam position sensor. They tell me the part is 350.22 plus labor of 106.35. I tried checking the info with my regular mechanic but he was tied up. I tell checkpoint to fix it since I have a $50 coupon. I figure there can't be a $50 difference between my regular mechanic and checkpoint. My mechanic calls back an hour later and says the part is $114 and $100 labor. I tell checkpoint and they say $114 is wrong. I show checkpoint the part online and it lists for $118-130. Checkpoint says that's the correct part but we have to pay the warehouse. I ask them where they get their parts. Checkpoint says Napa. I call Napa and they say the part is $143. I take it further and call the Toyota dealership to see their price knowing it's going to be high. Toyota says they have NEVER replaced that part. They say only the wiring has been fixed. Toyota says if they had to replace the part it would be 190 plus 100 labor. I tell checkpoint this and they say there's nothing we can do about it. Checkpoint has no idea what they are doing and run your typical mechanics scam to suck as much money from the consumer as they can. Don't ever trust checkpoint! read more

I took my car in to have a power steering leak checked out. Even though they don't work with a lot of European cars they agreed to take a look at it to point me in the right direction based on what they found. I was told that my power steering rack and pinion needed to be replaced and quoted me over $3000 for the repairs. After having another mechanic check it out, they told me that the rack and pinion only had a small leak, but not enough to justify replacing a $1700 part. He added that the problem was that a hose just had completely disconnected. Checkpoint claimed the hose was just "leaking." Their "evaluation" lacked honesty, and I would have been scammed out of a few thousand dollars for repair that was not even needed. read more
