I like the prime rib they have on Saturday nights. The wait staff is good and atmosphere is good. Quiet enough to talk. They have an excellent chef and makes a variety of food. I read more

Stumbled on this restaurant while camping nearby. I am a fan!!! Charming atmosphere, friendly and efficient service. Very clean. The food was very good - Friday fish fry. We'll be back to try more options. Can't wait to bring family and friends to share this treasure! read more

Best cheeseburger I've ever eaten. Reason enough to make the trek to Union. Good prices and service. Old fashioned car show was going on with live music nearby - fun little town. read more

Stopped in for lunch during the week with another retired bud and noticed they had both Raspberry Iced Tea.... and Hungarian Cabbage soup! I ordered that along with the Tuna Melt, and the soup was just like the Romanian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls our family has made forever. Absolutely delicious. Nice little spot in the country with a friendly staff. I'll be back to sample more. read more

If your willing to wait and hour and a half for a burger, and a kids hot dog then this is the place to go. Manager and owner wouldn't even talk to me or give me any explanation for the late food. We watched tables around ya get food who arrived after us. Sadly this was my first and only time to this restaurant. Horrible service, horrible customer service. They have a kids menu but no baby changing station, and the kids hot dog arrived cold and an hour and a half later. Get your own ketchup, hunt down a waitress for what you need and expect rude staff when you complain about cold food, still frozen fish, burned french onion soup. You order it you pay for it even if it tastes horrible. This place is discusting! read more

Generally, I have had decent meals at this restaurant. The broasted chicken is excellent. Recently stopped in on a Friday for the fish-fry. Found the fish-fry to be well below expectations. Frozen cod pieces that were obviously right out of a box. Very disappointing considering the otherwise good food we have enjoyed in the past. What really blew my mind, however, is that we received a SURCHARGE for extra tartar sauce! The meal came with an impotent little plastic cup of tartar sauce...roughly a tablespoon full. Not nearly enough to get through the entire meal, especially considering the subpar fish required tartar sauce to be palatable. I asked the server for an extra cup of tartar sauce which she delivered to the table without so much as a peep. Shocking to find an extra 50c charge on our ticket! Very disappointing and left a bad taste in my mouth, well in excess of the substandard fish offering. Although minor in the grand scheme of things, its unnecessary gestures such as turning a condiment into a profit center which drive me to seek out other food options the area. read more

Horribly slow service and does not honor the Entertainment Book coupon. Of course this is not posted anywhere and they use the excuse of new management. New management would post it, just like they did their other coupon notice on the front door outside. Kids meals do not include drinks and are expensive. Obviously they have no knowledge of kids portions.....half the food and half the price and everyone is happy. Tasteless "baked" French onion soup that is not at all even reheated to melt cheese. Our biggest gripe is being duped by the coupon...poor, poor choice not to honor it. Would have not reviewed but I feel it is only fair to warn others. read more

We were not expecting much when we saw the outside of the building, but once you get inside you are surprised at the surroundings. We went there to sample their German fare and were not disappointed. Both my husband and I ordered the Hunter Schnitzel, I am not a fan of mushrooms, but the gravy that covers the schnitzel is delicious and I could not even tell that there were mushrooms in that gravy. We went on a Sunday night and it wasn't very crowded, but the staff was very friendly and attentive. read more

If your willing to wait an hour and a half for a hamburger a tilapia entree and a hot dog for a toddler this is the place to go.

We have eaten here several times this year and really enjoy the experience. The servers are well experienced and provide great customer service. We've yet had a bad meal and enjoy the sausage platter, BBQ pork sandwich, cheese steak, to name a few. The pretzels are an excellent appetizer. Refills are always provided quickly and without having to ask. This is a well run restaurant and I suggest visiting if you are looking for a good meal. read more

Not the worst but not the greatest. We think Deeters was far better food with better choices for German food.

I love Checkers - especially in the warmer months when the Gazebo is open. And everything that I have had has been great whether it's a burger or reuben or a full dinner. Their broasted chicken and their schnitzels are the best. Servers and bartenders and friendly and efficient. Yeah, that joint's a little dated in decor but isn't that part of the charm?? read more

Obviously the chef knows how to cook good German food because our dinners were perfect. The sausage platter and mushroom schnitzel were great. Although the decor is a little dated, the scenery is exactly how expect it to be when we eat good German food. The bratkartoffeln was the best I've ever had....better then my moms and Oma's....which speaks volumes. :) read more

First visit was yesterday. Had the Sunday Roast Duck, It was STUPENDOUS. Nice and crispy served with wonderful sweet-sour red cabbage and spaetzel with a very good brown gravy. Good salad with an excellent blue cheese dressing. Complimented with fresh, very tasty rolls.and a good dark German beer. I just moved to Marengo a few months ago so I'll be back to Checkers as often as I can. read more

This is a wonderful restaurant/bar in Union. This was my first time here - my wife's second time. Upon walking in you see the local atmosphere. Something you can't find in a suburban franchise. We had four adults at the table. Our server was very personable. The night's specials were prime rib, surf & turf (lobster & filet mignon), and Cajun Walleye. We ordered the specials and enjoyed. I would compare this to a family place up in Wisconsin. We had a very nice evening. read more

This place is very small, lots of people tried walking in and they couldn't sit because all 5 tables were full. Staff seemed short. I was so pissed after waiting close to 60 mins for our food which was extremely simple; a patty melt sandwich/fries, two kids hot dog meals and a corned beef sandwich meal. The food was just okay.. my patty melt burger was about the size of a meatball it literally was shaped as a meatball it was hard to eat. My 6yr old son was starving when we walked into the restaurant and again waited FOREVER for our food he kept complaining and I felt so bad for him knowing he was so hungry. I pretty much think our waitress forgot to put our order or something because it shouldn't have taken so long. Other people got their food within a reasonable time, they didn't wait at all. When a large group of 10 walked in the host looked very annoyed as if she didn't want them there. I over heard the waitresses complaining on who was going to serve the large group. The prices seemed a little too extreme considering the service and amount of food and the quality of food. Overall I'm just super upset that we waited too long for such simple meals. Never going again. read more

The waitress was very nice and efficient. The food was absolutely terrible. The fried perch was overdone. You could barely chew it because it was so tough. The sauerbraten was too sour and it was so perfectly cut I found it hard to believe it wasn't processed. The red cabbage was worse than I could get in a jar. I have no idea what kind of soup I had because it certainly wasn't clam chowder, bland and a brown color. The chef came from the now closed Dieters restaurant. We only went there ONCE because the food was terrible. He is still making terrible food now at Checkers II. It was once decent food and now it's not. Will never go back. read more

This is a tiny restaurant in a tiny town just east of Rockford. We were making our way home and decided to turn to Yelp for a good place to eat. Quality place with a good sized menu with regular fare in addition to German dishes. We had a big warm pretzel to start that came with a delectable garlic dip as well as cheese and mustard. It was soft, warm and delicious. They import the dough from Germany. A nice touch. We sat at the bar since the restaurant was loaded because it was Thomas the Train weekend at the Train Museum nearby. The bar is in the same room as the dining room and is warm and welcoming. My husband had the giant burger special. It was huge with lots of bacon and cheese. He had cottage fries which were yummy. I don't normally eat the little bowl of coleslaw when it comes on the plate, but it was Delish. I knew if it was good my patty melt would not disappoint and it didn't. It was tasty and perfectly cooked. So much food we took half of it home. Later we ate our leftovers for a late snack and it was delectable. I can't believe the leftovers were that yummy. This is a great little restaurant that deserves another visit real soon. read more

Had lunch here on a very busy day on the Autumn Drive. Seated very quickly! Service was awesome, thank you Jackie! Food was the best. Two of us had French Dip with waffle fries. Wish the weather was nicer, would like to have sat outside. We will be back! read more

Good German food we love going there for October fest food and fun outside gazebo nice people who hang out and enjoy

I am glad Checker's II is so far away from Chicago area . Because if it was closer I would have to wait for a table, on for the all you can eat on there broasted chicken night. If you like broasted chicken take the trip price is right and after the first time around is done they ask what extra pieces you would like . Would highly recommend if you are a chicken lover like me. read more

German food was good that is why i'm giving it (2) stars. Service was not so good... Place is real small.... I feel it is not worth going back too, many other places to eat at that has better service. read more

Since we did see this place has such "awesome" reviews, my husband and I decided to check Checkers II out yesterday. The only thing positive I will say is that our waitress was very nice and attentive. Other than that, the food was awful. DO not get the lemonade. I ended up getting sick bcz it was so highly concentrated. The owner had "discussions" with his waitresses in the dining area. The waitresses all huddle by the bar/kitchen doors/greeting area and do nothing but laugh and talk amongst themselves. If Gordon Ramsey or Robert Irvine were to visit this place, they would have an absolute field day. This place needs to be cleaned big time!!! The food is all over the place. I don't know whether it truly is German or if there is a hint of French as well. Never ever going back to this place again. read more
