Not to flakey which made it much cleaner to eat. The naans were both good though the keema naan was more like a paratha. Still liked it a lot. I had the shahi paneer and like it a lot. This place is so delicious. I had the paneer tikka masala combo. It came with rice, salad, and daal. I added the jalapeño naan. The paneer tikka masala was so flavorful with the perfect texture. I've been stranded by Hurricane Irma for a few days and I'm staying in the area. I decided to give Chawla's a try, and I'm glad I did. When you walk in the seating area is very basic, but clean and comfortable. You go up to the counter to order, either from the menu or from the video screens above the counter. I was greeted warmly and my questions were answered. I chose the spicy chili paneer, which apparently they have a lunch special with that, it comes with lentils and a choice of naan bread. I didn't quite realize they had a lunch special, but glad the guy told me about it. It was delicious! The chili paneer was spicy, though I would have liked it a bit spicier, but it was good. The lentils had a little smoky flavor to them which was delicious. The garlic naan was good, not the best I've ever had, but for all of that and a bottle of water I paid around $11, more with tip, but I found it a great value. The reason I docked a star was how the meal comes out. They serve the stay orders on plastic with plastic utensils, and to me it's just wasteful. I can understand why they do it, as it's probably cheaper and when they are really busy they don't have to clean plates, etc. Its just not that environmentally friendly. If you want some good Indian food at a good value in a very casual atmosphere then Chawlas2 fits the bill. I will be back given the opportunity. read more

As soon as I walked the aroma of the food hit me it was amazing in the guy at the counter smiled and took my order, he was very very friendly and nice. I ordered the Tandori Chicken Combo with roti to go along with two veggie samosas. The menu looks pretty big and decent. Also it was pretty packed so usually packed places say food is good. So the food was good and samosas awesome as well. Just the right amount of spice. The combo came with lentils and a little salad the chicken was spicy but really really good, lentils were absolutely delicious and I've gotta day that the tamarind sauce for the samosas is one of the best ones I've ever had. I acknowledge that the flavors of a dish can vary from restaurant to restaurant, however I can't recommend this place based on my experience. The food arrived on time, considering I was at a hotel I thought they would bring utensils, however, none included. No big deal I had my own. The palak paneer unfortunately had a pasty texture. I've been ordering palak paneer for years, I've had good bad and average, this one ranges between average-bad in my opinion. The Aloo Gobi was fine, I ordered mild, it was pretty hot, but that's OK, you expect that with Indian food. My big problem really is that when I normally have Indian food, it's magical, I don't get chunks of ginger and lemon grass that I'm chewing and gnawing on. With this food, that's what I had. The flavor was OK, I thought the dal was delicious, but I certainly would never order this again nor did I eat 90% of what I ordered. I have a bit of a tummyache, but that could be just from the spice. This review is based on my most recent experience: I have ordered from here several times, and never had any issues... until now. People were kind, and food was always good, with quick and friendly delivery. I have ordered over the phone, as well as via their website. I placed an order a couple of nights ago via their website, and received an email confirmation right away, and my credit card showed a pending charge for $36.13. After I waited for about an hour and 20 minutes, I didn't hear anything further, so I called the restaurant to inquire. The employee asked if I had ordered via UberEats, and I said no, via the website, like I had several times before. She simply said, "the website doesn't work." I'm not sure if I got disconnected or if she hung up on me (mid-sentence.) I called back, saying maybe this was a bad connection, and the woman kept shouting, "the website doesn't work!" I mentioned that it worked in the past, and asked if is this a new problem, and she just kept shouting at me that "it doesn't work!!" I said that I was just trying to find out how I can cancel, as my credit card does show a charge, and I suggested the restaurant update their website to not allow customers to order directly from there. Even when you Google the restaurant, the delivery option specifically says "restaurant prefers" to use this method. When you click on the restaurant menu, a screen opens that says in huge red letters, "Place your order online for easiest ordering experience, order now!" Below that, there is a logo for "MyMozo," which is apparently the software that it uses. It states that you may see a charge on your credit card that says "3g Global Systems, Inc." I have used this method several times before, as I try to order directly from restaurants, so they may benefit more than if we use a middleman like UberEats, so I was honestly trying to help the restaurant's business. I tried speaking with someone else about the issue, but kept getting routed to this same rude woman, who hung up on me every time. Having had good experiences at Chawlas in the past, I honestly expected someone to say, "I'm so sorry this happened," and made a suggestion of a contact person to rectify the credit card charges. She clearly did not care at all that I was a customer who lost money, and I even said, I will have to report this as a bad charge to my credit card company, and that might flag your restaurant as fraudulent; I was really trying to avoid this. I suggested updating the website, so that other people don't go through the same problems. Again, I was repeatedly hung up on and scolded (as if I was an idiot for trying to support their restaurant and order food through their website.) Having called again today, suggesting again that the restaurant, at the very least, update their website, I was hung up on again (why do I keep getting this same person?) I just reported the charge to AmericanExpress, and will not be spending any more money at this establishment. I am extremely disappointed that after I spent hundreds of dollars here, I was treated with such disrespect, when all I was looking for was some kind of explanation and suggestion on how to rectify this charge. read more

Butter chicken - one of the best I've ever had Unfortunately every time I order (to go or delivery) there's not enough chicken in the order !!! Tandoori chicken - (bone in) the BEST. Always cooked through and still moist. Garlic nan- always on point. Tonight we added lollipop chicken and it was phenomenal! One of the biggest things things I have a problem with is that it takes a full hour to deliver but everything is made to order and hot wherever pick up or delivery. I love Indian food! And I'm so glad that I stumbled upon this secret gem right in my area! Thanks again Yelp! First walking in your stomach grumbles from the beautiful aroma of the spices in the air! Chawlas 2 reminds me of a family own business, where they make sure they take there time with your order. My lovely foodie partner in crime and I had ordered the palak paneer, as well as the chicken malai tikka. Both orders came with lentil soup and your choice of nan or rice and a small salad. We both ordered the garlic nan instead. I also had to get the mango lassi! I must say our order took a while for it to come out but one thing for sure is you know it's going to be nice and hot, and freshly made which it was!! The food itself is AMAZING! The flavors, the spice and the garlic nan bread is to die for! The staff that work there are very sweet. If you are dining in they make sure they put your food on a dinner plate, serve you water and all. If your taking out they have awesome to go containers. One of the best Indian restaurants in the area in my opinion! Previously the other owners had a successful business, but I feel as though the new owners have really marked their spot. I enjoy the mango lassi, chicken biryani, mutton biryani, butter chicken, fresh chai, and naan just time name a few. The good thing about this place is you can always customize the spice level. So if you're into spicy food just tell them, but if you went your food mild they can do thag as well. The biryanis are always 100% fresh , it's very filling and a taste of India in my opinion. It tastes just like home cooking. The chai is another great addition, it's always hot and fresh for you. If you don't like bowl your chai tastes you can always tell them and a new cup will be made. The butter chicken and naan are another great combo, the creaminess of the butter chicken and buttery flavoring of the naan really hit well. Just these two good items alone can fill you up. The mango lassi is a great one too. The yogurt and mango combo is the best in my opinion, but perhaps filling so be cautious! The customer service at this restaurant ruined its potential rating. Although the food was good, the customer service will prevent me and my friends/family from reordering. My uncle placed a lunch order around 3pm and called after waiting 2 whole hours for the food. The lady who got on the phone with him told him the chefs were on a break, to which my uncle responded they should have let us know rather than keep us waiting. The woman replied with yelling at him rudely asking if my uncle thinks they don't deserve breaks. Who speaks to someone like that? Why would my uncle think chefs should not get a break?! What is it with new Indian restaurants taking a turn for the worst? So much promise and hope in the beginning, but seems like they get confident in the first few months and then start making budget cuts and poor decisions that drive customers away. Would never order takeout or dine out from this joint ever again for two reasons: 1) Our order took an hour to be ready after placing it. We deliberately placed the order an hour before (anticipating delay on their end), and still had to wait an hour to get the food. Really two hours for 2 dishes and some tandoori roti... come on. 2) We ordered a paneer dish (Indian cottage cheese) since my parents are strict vegetarians for religious reasons and they gave us chicken makhani instead. It's lucky I started eating this chicken makhani or I would have to witness my parents throwing up in horror at eating meat. And we asked them THREE times to confirm that they gave us paneer since this has happened before. Definitely not making the mistake of giving them business again. We Yelped for Indian food in the JFK-vicinity and chanced upon Chawla's. And we are so thrilled to have discovered this place! This nondescript-looking restaurant dishes out some of the most mouth-watering authentic North Indian/Punjabi style meals I've had in NYC/NJ. We tried the Chicken Achari tikka combo meal with a side of Amritsari chole and another combo platter of the Butter chicken (again with the chole). The chole (chickpea gravy) that Chawla's makes has to be the best I've had. It rivals home cooked ones I've relished in friends' homes back in Delhi and Punjab. It was so, so good. The traditional way to making this dish is by using black spices (whole cloves, cardamom, peppercorn etc.), chaat masala (a special spice powder to give it the tanginess), but what sets it apart is the black tea bags or black tea water that's used for the broth. Unlike regular Indian restaurants, which serve the common, tomato-y version of this dish, the Amritsari chole is really a class apart when done well - and Chawla's does it genuinely well. It was spiced just right and had the sharpness this dish needs without being too spicy to drown out the natural flavor of the chickpeas. Between the two chicken dishes, the chicken achari tikka got our vote. The chicken pieces were succulent and the meat was grilled well imparting the smoky flavor. The sauce in the butter chicken was delicious...creamy and smooth, but the chicken pieces didn't taste too fresh. We also got a side of the black daal (daal makhni) and chicken biryani to go. The daal was very flavorful and well-made... could easily go back for more. Coming to the biryani - it was aromatic and the flavors of the rice with the meat came together well. One of the better versions of the dish I've had in a really long time. Must the add the staff was really wonderful and hospitable - also gave us tons of extra naan with our combo platter. Would love to try their other vegetarian dishes when we go back - they definitely seem to have a slight upper hand over the meat ones. If you're in the area and craving Indian food, definitely give Chawla's a shot. One caveat - North Indian cuisine tends to be rich in spices, so pace yourself well! read more
