Both paved and natural paths galore. It was my first time visiting with a friend and spent a few hours walking and talking while the dogs played fetch and sniffed a few things. Was a fun day for all. This park may be a far drive for some people, therefore you may not want to take your dog but I promise you it is worth the drive! There is a cement path throughout the park which is almost 2 miles around. The ponds are great for the dogs to play in! Plenty of trees, shade and places for dogs to sniff, run and hunt for squirrels. Important things: Always watch your dog and know where they are at all times! So many people come here just to exercise themselves and don't pay attention to their dog. Always pick up your dogs poop! There are plenty of trash cans and poop bags throughout the park. If your dog likes water and you don't want them to get wet, do not bring them here. They WILL want to get into the water. It is unfair for the dog if you don't allow them to get wet just because you don't want them to. (Bring towels in your car). There are 2 parking lots and 2 bathrooms. This dog park, in my opinion, is the best in the metro area. It's adjacent to Chatfield Reservoir and the scenery is amazing. It's safely and well gated in. There are many acres for your dog to roam and there is even a small lake for your dog to swim in. They have drinkable running water and restrooms. The parking is easy and plentiful and it's in a beautiful area of town. You do have to have a Parks Pass to get in but it's well worth the yearly purchase of a pass. This place is huge and your dog will love it. Mine sure does. My lovely bride and I often go just to walk around it ourselves. It's a beautiful place and great for photography. This was this first 'place' we came as new residents of Colorado last year to take our dogs for a walk. In CA we never utilized dog parks (kennel cough, dogs attacking other dogs, small parks) We pulled into the parking lot and I think our dogs eyes we bigger than ours! We entered a beautifully maintained park. Clean. Folks picking up after themselves. The park was so large, dogs did not get aggressive. (In a years time, we have seen one episode of bad behavior) We strolled quietly by ourselves and wandered to a water area. There were dogs swimming. Owners trying to teach their dogs to swim, dogs just watching from the sidelines. (That would be our dogs) it was fabulous We have learned that there are long trails, short trails, paved trails, and dirt trails. It is a great place to let your doggies wander, and you just enjoy. **Be prepared, a doggy May run up and great you you!! They are very happy when here. So come and enjoy. Recommend: Buy the annual pass, then you must also buy the dog pass separately. You enter the left entrance and save $12 per visit. Love the space and amount of water at this dog park. It's one of the few close to denver where your dog can go for a swim so it's perfect for hot days. With that being said, you go in the same entrance for the rest of the park and on busy summer days, you can find yourself waiting in a very long line. I don't have a park pass so I pay for each day I come here and it works for the few days of the year but not sure if it would be worth it to actually get the pass. It is definitely a bit of a drive to get here if you don't live in the SW metro area. And, once you do get here, it is a few miles from the park entrance to the off-leash dog area (so budget your driving time accordingly). This stretch of road has very low speed limits and a lot of traffic. The most challenging aspect (especially on the weekends) is the navigating the large number of bicyclists on a relatively narrow road. However, once you have run the obstacle course, you will get your reward. There are two paved parking lots to choose from, both with bathroom facilities (complete with running water). This is a large fenced area with walking trails around the perimeter, as well as criss-crossing the area. The most attractive feature of this park is the series of ponds which provide a good opportunity for your dog to do some serious swimming. Long after the Cherry Creek Off Leash area has pretty much run dry, you will still find water here. read more

I've heard good things about this park over the years, but I think based on what I've heard it's overrated. I thought I saw that it's a $3 fee for the dog park day pass, but I didn't realize it was another $10 to just get into the park itself. I guess I failed to thoroughly do my research. It took us a bit to get down there, so by the time we learned the fees, we just went for it since we were already there and waited in line. The park itself is nice, but not really any tree coverage for the really hot days like when we went (so we only stayed for a shorter amount of time). There is a pond for the pups to play in, which is fun. Mine doesn't know about the water and swimming so she just got in and watched others. The walking paths are nice and we were able to take our stroller with our 9 month old. Given all that, we can find another park with the open space and trails for us to take our pup too, sans the line and the fees so I don't see us returning. read more

This dog park is so great! I just got a year pass to Chatfield park (~$70) and the dog park (an additional $20). The facility itself is amazing! They have trash cans and dog bags posted all around the park so you really have NO reason not to pick up after your dog. There's 2 parking lots which always have ample parking during the weekend. There's also restrooms available at both lots. There's multiple swimming ponds for you to throw sticks and balls at for your pet. The park is about 1.5 miles fully around (I think?) What's great is you can exercise/run with your dog! I always hate having to run with my 80lb lab on a leash because if he stops or runs ahead I'm always dragged along for the ride! During the summer there are a few water stations for your dog to drink at. But during the winter, I'd say around October or so they shut off the water to winterize so you'll need yo remember to bring your own water for your dog. read more

There are hills to explore, valleys with trees to sniff around, many ponds to plop around in. On nice weekends, this place is out of control packed. People will camp your parking spot, and you may have to camp someone else's spot to be able to enjoy it here. Honestly, the cluster around the main pond on busy days is too much for our pup. 30 dogs splashing around and wrestling, 30 owners calling their dogs--little dude gets confused, so we stay away from there during super busy times. I love this dog park! It is by far the biggest dog park near us and my dogs love the huge area to run and play. They also have water within the park which my dogs love to cool off in during the warmer months. There are many different paths to take around the park so we always have something new to explore. I sometime run around the whole perimeter of the park with my dogs and it's approximately 2 miles to run all the way around. The park is well maintained and clean. They have plenty of dog bags available through the park. All of the owners are very respectful. They all seem very attentive and pick up after their dogs. There is a cost to get into Chatfield State Park (you have to go in the main Chatfield State Park entrance and then follow signs to the dog park), which is ~$70 for an annual pass, but it gets you into any other state park in Colorado so definitely worth the price if you'll be hiking and/or camping in other state parks as well. read more

I find Denver's State Parks a better alternative to the busy, dry and shadeless Denver City dog parks. Our beloved Sophie LOVES this park. She's gets excited in the car when we enter the park. If you do go regularly, buy a park permit. You'll get your money's worth. We've seen all types of dogs here and they are so friendly. Only once did I hear someone yell "CONTROL YOUR DOG!" to another dog owner. I don't know if I like it better than the Cherry Creek Off Leash Dog Park - it's pretty freaking awesome. As we started walking it's a lot bigger than it seems at first. My pup had a wonderful time running in the plains and trotting across the frozen lakes after the illusive large sticks. It helps that the Cherry Creek passes work at the Chatfield Park as well. Two for the price of one. I think we will officially be back once the lakes thaw so she can frolic in the water. I tried out this dog park recently when looking for somewhere new to let my pooch explore after the Evergreen dog park was closed. This place is WONDERFUL for dogs. There are lots of places to explore and paths to take for the dogs to see something new. They have a pond that dogs love to swim in or as my doodle prefers, simply stand and run around in, she's afraid of the "deep end". There are also trash stations placed all around the park so no worries about running into waste or not having a place to put yours. I'm guessing that's what some of the dog park fees cover are grounds maintenance and waste management. Either way, it feels like a clean open places for pooches to play. Chatfield has become the place that people are bringing some pretty aggressive dogs to 'run off their energy'. On our last couple of visits, each of my dogs were attacked. Yes, folks attacked. I'm not saying friendly playing. Other dogs that ran at them, knocked them down and bit until I hauled them off. When I called out for the owner to call their dog, I was met with human aggression (yelling and threats). I'm very disappointed to say that a place which has all the possibility of being wonderful has become bedlam. People are not picking up their dogs' droppings, paths have turned into poop-lined walkways. Folks, you shouldn't be taking your dog off leash if you can not call them back to you. Biting another dog or jumping on it's back is NOT normal behavior. UGH. read more

The best off-leash park in the Denver area, hands down! Here are SIX THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW before you take your pup to Chatfield: 1. You're going to have to pay a park fee to enter, so bring cash. During the winter or off-peak times, it's all on the honor system (i.e. put your money in an envelope and drop it in a slot), but there's still a fee. It's up to you if you want to skirt the system on these days... 2. Dogs of all size, shape, and attitude abound here. Most are friendly and well-socialized, but if your dog has issues with any particular type (one of ours hates little dogs, for example), you might want to gauge her behavior before letting her off the leash. After all, you don't want to be THAT PERSON. You know, the one whose dog ate that little old lady's Shih Tzu. 3. Bring towels or an old blanket if you care about your vehicle's upholstery. Chatfield boasts three little lakes and a nice stream. I've seen even the most avowed water-haters turn into paddle-dogs here! I guess when they see how much fun the rest of the swimmers are having it's just too tempting to stay away. 4. Don't bring your dog's ultimate favorite toy. Chances are, it'll get lost, stolen, or simply forgotten about what with all the other canine distractions running amok (dogs! dogs! dogs! omigawd dogs!). Old tennis balls are better. 5. The off-leash area, while HUGE, is limited. Don't release the hounds until you're safely within its marked borders. Park rangers lurk, and they will ticket you. 6. Yes, you can picnic here, but expect lots of uninvited guests... and I don't mean squirrels. Dogs move a lot faster than your average strolling human, and by the time Bowser's owner catches up to him he just may well have snatched a bite from your lovely cheese plate. Be vigilant. Above all, have fun! Off-leash areas this large and well-endowed are hard to find. Chatfield's Dog Park is a true gem! read more

This dog park is in a two-way tie for second-best off-leash park in Denver. Westminster (http://www.yelp.com/biz/westminster-dog-park-westminster) has the biggest, and most free dog park in the metro area, but this park and Cherry Creek compete for the silver medal. Chatfield is a 70-acre park. Compare that to almost every other park in Denver, which are almost all 2 - 4 acres, and you can already see the advantage of this place. For comparison, Westminster is 420 acres, and Cherry Creek is 125 acres. However, the next-largest park in Denver is a 20-acre park in Arvada. The best thing about this park is it's varied terrain and features. By the entrance, there are a couple ponds, but there's some low, riverbed-like areas that the girlfriend's hunting dog loves to explore. She likes flushing the birds out of the bushes among the sand. There are some rolling hills, with trails, and a cool area with a bunch of rotting wood from fallen trees. Our dogs just soak it all up, and love every minute while we're here. The park is small enough that you're guaranteed to get some good socialization time in, but big enough that you can escape a particular area if it's too chaotic. The downside is the entry fee. It's $2 per dog (or $20 per year), but you also have to pay to get into the park, unless you use the super-secret [religious reference removed]-mode entrance. In that case, you have to walk an extra 1.5 miles (round trip distance) to get from the free parking to the dog park gate. I don't mind the extra distance, but it's slightly inconvenient. **PRO-TIP** Here's how to get to the dog park without paying the Chatfield State Park entry fee. Get to "Viable Road." One way is to take 470 to Kendall Blvd, hang some rights, and take Depew Road by the boat dealership. Follow the road; there are two parking lots at the dead end. From the last lot, it's a .75-mile walk to the entrance. Start on the path. Note that there are a few public ponds to the north. Pass the roundabout, and go south under 470. WATCH FOR CYCLISTS! They are instructed by sign to dismount, but they never do, so keep your dogs close. Continue on the path. At 0.19 miles, take left fork to cross the bridge. Hang a right after the bridge to continue westward. At 0.33 miles, the bike path hooks left; continue straight. Relax, the bikers are gone. Continue on the path. When it curves back to the north, there's an off-road trail that continues straight, towards the dog park. Take the non-sidewalk path here. You'll see the corner of the park to your right. You cannot enter here due to the new fence, so continue straight along the perimeter of the fence. At 0.75 miles, you are at the entrance. read more

I have been coming here for several years and this place is like Disneyworld for dogs. Acres and acres of everything your dog could want - river, ponds, woods, plains and plenty of friends to play with in all of the areas. I have never had any problems with any other dogs here. You can either go in through the park's entrance, which is free if you have a state parks pass and $5 if you don't, or you can park on the other side of 470 and walk on the bike path to get here. Either way, if you have a dog that likes water, running or other dogs, this is the place for you. As with any place you may bring your dog, you have a responsibility as a pet owner. Please pick up your dog's crap. If you are not willing to do that, don't get a dog. It really is just that simple. At Chatfield, you may want to bring your own bags since bags are not located every 100 feet and trash cans are very sparse. read more

I'm a big fan of the Cherry Creek Dog Park, so I was initially a little skeptical to venture outside the box and check out the "other dog park." While both are equidistant to our house, it was a good call to venture away from the Cherry Creek park on this particular day since the weather was crazy nice and the ranger station at Cherry Creek gets SO backed up on the nice days. Kudos to the Chatfield park for being easy to get in and out of! There are two easy entrances to the dog park area - one off Santa Fe, and one off Wadsworth, but be forewarned - the Santa Fe entrance is only open in the spring and summer seasons. Anyway, hubby and I started walking around the perimeter to get the lay of the land and while it's a little tricky to throw the tennis ball in some places (that's all our dog cares about), I liked that there's paved pathways and a HUGE swimming area. How did we miss this when we came in? Seriously, it's like a doggie ocean. Needless to say, as soon as our lab spotted the little lake - he was in it and super happy with life. They also have two sport dog training areas where if you have a special permit, you can train your dog with blanks. I have yet to figure out how and where you get a special permit, but one of the two training areas is right across from the dog park. read more
