This wasn't in my Budget, but I got it anyway…read more Budget has become my go-to company and I think they're actually the same company as Avis these days - although I can't be sure. When I want to rent a car, I usually go with Budget (since I'm on a Budget), and I've had slightly better experiences overall with them than Avis, but honestly I do think they are the same company. If you want to rent a car near Memorial City, this is a good option for you as Avis/Budget is cheaper than most, and usually they have a car similar to what I need... But having said that it can be a really shady company, and if things go wrong well good luck because you probably on your own. You'll even be charged more for their own cars breaking down.

This is a 20 minute drive for me but the Yelp reviews on the 2 Avis locations closer to me were bad enough to scare me away. After all was said and done, the drive to this location was completely worth it. The customer service was extraordinary which is something that is hard to come by it seems. The gentleman who helped me was so straightforward and quick but he was also funny and nice. Clearly a really good guy. And if that wasn't enough, the car we rented was great. He gave us a free upgrade and the car was clean and comfortable. On top of that, the price was really great, a good $100 less than the major competitor. I booked online and it was super easy and very user friendly. I can't say enough good things about this place, this is definitely going to be the only place I rent from!

I booked a 9:00 AM reservation for a luxury car -- one of the only ones available anywhere in Houston. I showed up on time and walked into a completely empty office. No staff. No one in the lobby, no one in the back, and the front door left wide open and unlocked during business hours, they open at 8AM. A rental location, full of keys and cars, standing wide open with nobody watching it. I waited. After 10 minutes I called the number posted on a sign, and the guy who answered couldn't have cared less. Rude, dismissive, and his big solution was that I could either keep waiting or cancel. He claimed he was "stuck in traffic on I-10" -- the exact road I'd just driven, where there was none. I waited another 40 minutes anyway. He never showed. Not once. An online agent finally had to cancel my reservation, which left me stranded and paying for an Uber home after this location torched an hour of my morning for nothing. I'm a President's Circle member -- Hertz's top tier -- and this is how the day went. If this is the experience they hand their best customers, I can't imagine what everyone else gets. An abandoned, unlocked office and an employee who couldn't be bothered to do the one thing his job requires: show up. Book literally anywhere else.

I was in route of a 3 hour trip and needed another vehicle. I called Fifth Rent A Car and spoke to Mollie. Mollie was very helpful even while working alone. After arriving about 4:20, we were finally able to get on the road at 6:30. Yes, 2 hours to get a vehicle with only 1 other set of customers in the lobby. Once Mollie bought the car around (she had to do it all), I told her the smell was very bad in the car. The hazard light, and another light were showing on the dashboard with a warning. Even with it being late, I mentioned to Mollie about my concerns about the very, very, very dark tint on the windows. Mollie assured us the vehicle had just been cleared and was safe to drive. Since we needed it we decided to continue our trip. Fast forward, the trip - While driving the car and applying the brake, the car shook uncontrollable because it needed an alignment. We stopped to get something to eat on the Sunday, and the guy next to us asked us if we had seen the tire. I took a picture of the tire. Fifth Rent A Car ae the ones that marked the white paint around the area on the tire. Fifth Rent A Car put me and my friends in danger with this vehicle. No only the tire, the shaking, the dashboard lights, the smell and also trying to look out the side windows with the glare coming from the air condition vents blocking the view.

I waited 15 minutes for someone to show up, eventually had the car brought over to find the tire pressure monitoring sensor was on, but that model didn't show the actual pressure. Went back in, they took the car and then brought it back with the same error showing and said it was fine to drive. Not to mention the exterior of the car was very dirty, with a couple half-hearted swipes with a rag it looked like. About 3 hours into my trip, I got rear ended at a stop light in a small town in Texas. Police showed up asking for insurance information that I wasnt on my car rental agreement. I spent the next hour being bounced around National's hellscape that is their customer service departments. No one has access to the info I needed, but they were happy to keep sending me to another department or giving me another phone number to call. Finally, the officer said don't worry about it, you aren't at fault. National can figure out the insurance side and let me go. Then I got to spend another 45 minutes trying to find out what National wanted me to do with the damaged vehicle I was now stuck with. I was told that the nearest location I could swap it out was at a small regional airport an hour out of my way. But not to worry they would call ahead and set everything up. When I arrived, the clerk and manager had no idea who I was and that they had no vehicles to rent for THREE OR FOUR HOURS. I still had 3 hours to drive and it was 6pm by now and I had a job to get early the next morning. This delay ended up with my being late for that job and having to cancel my flight and instead drive 8 hours to my next assignment. I called National AGAIN to try to switch to a more comfortable vehicle, was told again to go to another branch and they would set everything up. You can guess what happened next, that branch had no idea who I was and had nothing available. I have not heard back from National regarding any of this, any contact has been on my part chasing them around and receiving noncommital "apologies".
