Went here to celebrate a birthday on Christmas Day. The food and presentation was excellent. We started off with the calamari appetizer, which was good and a huge portion! Then came the main course. My boyfriend had the twin lobster tails. He loved everything except the broccoli I which was hard and flavorless. I ordered the Chilean sea bass with a bleu cheese topping and swapped out the rice for garlic mashed potatoes. It was delicious! We finished the meal off with the chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream which I was excited to try after reading reviews. It was just ok. Overhyped in my opinion. Overall, I would definitely recommend this restaurant! The ambiance and views were amazing and we got there just before a snow storm rolled in, so it made for a very romantic and scenic dinner. Hummus trio - $4 Pretty good snack with lots of pita to scoop the various flavors of hummus. Deep fried artichoke hearts - $4 crunchy and light batter and perfectly cooked artichoke hearts inside Truffle fries - $4 - nice shoestring fries with a few extra toppings like a sprinkle of parmesan Ahi Tuna Nachos - $5 - A real standout with sushi grade slices of seared ahi topping wonton chips and sprinkled with wasabi sauce and a slice of ginger Fish tacos - $7 - Nothing to write home about but fresh Think that covers it. I've been visiting this Chart House in South Lake Tahoe for 20+ years and it's always been great. Our last visit however, was so awful, I don't know if we'd ever go back, and it was all due to the service we encountered. It started in the bar . We had reservations (for four people), but arrived 20 minutes early to have a drink at the bar. We knew we'd have to wait and that was no big deal. We sat at the bar (Our wives sitting, myself and my friend standing). The bartenders (Nate and Joey) were awful. We were treated as if we were an absolute inconvenience to them. They were more concerned with the football game that was on the TV and talking with each other, than seeing if we needed anything or wanted another round as our drinks sat empty. Only when we were being escorted to our table was there a second interaction with them, about closing out or transferring our bill to our table. When we were seated at our table, this is where things got much worse. Our server was Jeff. He seemed overwhelmed, irritated, and his brevity also made us feel very unwelcomed. We ordered 2 appetizers, some more drinks (since Nate and Joey didn't seem interested in offering us another round at the bar), salads, dinner, dessert (because you have to order the lava cake ahead of time due to it taking 30+ minutes) and we also informed Jeff we brought a bottle of wine. Jeff opened our wine to let it breathe (which we asked for). Our appetizers came out fine, but when Jeff brought out my friends beer, he placed the cold pint glass on the table and poured the beer very quickly into the glass (as if he'd never poured a beer before) and the beer foamed over the glass and onto the table... then he left. He didn't apologize, he didn't offer to clean it up, nothing... just moved on. Our salads came, which were great, except that I had to stand up from the table and find another server for some fresh cracked pepper that we were never offered. At this point I was becoming frustrated with the lack of service that had been building from both the bar with Nate and Joey and now with our server, Jeff. Our dinners eventually arrived and they were great also (no complaints about any of the food ; always great). We asked for some wine glasses for our wine, and we were given 4 glasses. Again, glasses were set down, and Jeff moved on. The wine was never poured for us, we had to pour it ourselves. Not a huge deal, but all these little things were adding up. We enjoyed our dinner, and luckily everything was great, but Jeff wouldn't have known that because we never saw him again until we were done with our meals and our plates were being cleared away. There was never a "check-in" to see if we needed anything, if our steaks were cooked appropriately, or if we needed anything at all throughout our entrees. After our dinner plates were cleared, our bill/check was promptly put on the table with no words exchanged. Our bill was just set on the corner of the table. We were never offered coffee, an after dinner drink, and the lave cake dessert we ordered at the beginning of the meal never came out, but you better believe it was on the check! So frustrating! At this point our terrible experience had trumped the food and we were disappointed. I spoke with the manager (which I have only done twice in my life, including this), briefly summarizing what had happened. He left, and then returned back to me with a new bill, removing the lava cake we never received and he comped our corkage. Wow. Thanks for comping the wine we brought and had to pour ourselves, and removing the item we never received. We had spent over $350 at the restaurant at this point throughout the night. I should have asked for more to be comped, but I was so irritated, I just wanted to leave. We were all disappointed by the service we received at Chart House from Nate, Joey, and Jeff, and we will be looking a new place to have dinner when we visit South Lake Tahoe. read more

I ordered 2 Turkey dinners for Thanksgiving. $160 for both plus tip. Opon getting home and opening everything up it looked delicious. Well there was No Gravy at all ! Also no rolls. It has been years since we have come here, and we were excited for a nice meal. The service was awful. We ran out of water several times, and had to wait quite awhile for refills. Our server rarely checked on us, forgot my lobster bisque, forgot my husband's cocktail and his lobster (brought only his filet), and then randomly brought us coffee that we didn't order at the end of our meal. We had a going away party here for a long time coworker. We put together a larger group and crashed happy hour. The first drink order took at least 30 minutes for 3 drinks. After that it sped up a bit. We ordered a couple of everything on the happy hour menu and it was all very good. More and more people showed up to the event and we squeezed them in. Terrific dining experience last night. Went to celebrate our anniversary and they printed a special menu for us with our anniversary mentioned and an anniversary card. Perfect start. The service, food, and ambience were wonderful. We had cocktails to start, and no skimping on the alcohol. We enjoyed a bone marrow appetizer, salad, Asian green beans and two entrees, shrimp and scallops and a prime rib. Both tasty and perfectly done. The manager Michael was constantly checking on all the tables and our server Andrea was a gem. And although we were full, they brought us a fantastic slice of mud pie with a candle which was a nice way to end the evening. One of the best we've had. Thanks Chart House, we'll be back. read more

I went here with a party of 11 primarily to check out their drinks which looked so cool on Yelp and because it was one of the only places that still had space for reservations. When we arrived they were out of dry ice so that cut down our options for the drinks which was a bummer. I ordered the ribeye steak and a chocolate based whiskey cocktail that were both delicious. Even though it was near closing time the service was great and we enjoyed our dinner. Great location and great views!! Went around 7:15 so we were able to see the sun set and it was perfect. Staff was amazing and attentive through the whole meal. Steaks were cooked to perfection! I went with the Prime Rib and was not disappointed. Sides of shrooms and spinach were shared by all. Started with the grill octopus and it was so flavorful i found myself licking the plate. I have been to The Chart House in other locations and had high expectations, however our recent visit (11/28/2020) was very disappointing. My Old Fashion cocktail was mostly water and nearly devoid of flavor. Plus it came with a cherry that belonged in a kids drink and not an adult cocktail. My scallops were quite rare and the server never came back to check on us, so I was stuck with them. They really should have been a nice medium. The prime rib my wife had was excellent and cooked to perfection, so nothing to complain about there. It was not up to their usual standards, but I would try them again just to be fair. read more

This place is super nice, perfect for special occasions; b-day, anniversaries, etc. However, on both visits the service was mediocre, at best. Our server was kind and sweet, but would forget simply things like our salads and drinks. We had to remind *server that we were still waiitng and at some point we thought we would get both appetizer and our steak at the same time. It was a bit frustrating to say the least. Went here for my 50th birthday. Atmosphere was great and clean. The place didn't have a great view even though we sat next to the windows. The lake was blocked by trees and the garden wasn't much to look at. Our waitress was trying to up sell everything on us. It was a long day of hanging out in the waters by Secret Cove. It was all fun and games until we realized that the hike back up was going to kill us Our legs felt like jello and our stomachs were empty. So we decided we deserved a treat after that! When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised by how big and spacious it is on the inside! There is a downstairs dining area as well that leads out to a yard where you are free to access while you wait for your food and what not. It's an upscale vibe for sure, and we were definitely not dressed for it. But nonetheless, we were treated appropriately and didn't feel "unwelcomed." We arrived around 7:30pm and they had quite the crowd. I was really impressed with the staff! They did a fantastic job of keeping things moving. It was very organized and professional. Tip: We came in without having reservations, And waited for about 30-45mins? Which was not bad at all, especially considering with how busy they were. Next time though, we will definitely do reservations so hopefully we can get a good seat to catch that California sunset! Which the restaurant has a great view of!! Food/Service: Our server was amazing. I wish I remembered his name, but he was very helpful with explaining things on the menu to us and answered all our questions. He was very attentive to us and refilled our drinks just enough times. We ended up getting 3 appetizers, 2 entrees, and dessert. (Obviously we were starving) For the apps, we got the Kim Chee Calamari, Charred Octopus, and Crab Cake. 10/10 I would definitely recommend all of these for appetizers. The octopus was tender, the calamari also comes with fried veggies which just melt in your mouth and it's lightly covered in a tangy sauce, and the crab cake was amazing. It had plenty of crab meat and the sauce it was paired with was perfect. For our entrees, the husband did the Mahi, sautéed, with the Rockefeller topping. He says it was the best seafood he's had! It came with coconut ginger rice and veggies. For me, I ordered the Peach-Bourban Glazed Scallops and Shrimp. Which is one of their summer special options. The size of those two things were pretty decent! They came on a bed of corn, bacon, and red bell peppers all sautéed with each other in another great tasting sauce! (Their sauces are on point lol.) And finally dessert. We never order dessert, but we just had to this time. We got the Hot Lava Cake served with house-made vanilla ice cream with bits of toffee sprinkled in. The cake was moist and the ice cream was delicious. Tip: Order the lava cake with a shot of espresso and you will NOT be disappointed! Summary: I am so glad we found this place. This has got to be one of the best meals we've had since we moved to California. The portions of everything we got was perfect and not skimpy at all. We left full and satisfied! Our experience at the chart house was nothing but disappointing. We were seated quickly, but were not served for some time. After waiting 15 minutes our server did finally come to our table to see what kind of water we wanted for the table. We ordered one round of cocktails and our server NEVER asked if anyone wanted another glass or refilled our water. One of the wine glasses had a 3 inch crack in it. The cheesecake we ordered was freezer burned and hard as a rock. The "famous" lava cake that takes 30 minutes took over 45. The edges were okay, but as you got to the center it was apparent it tasted like frozen beef that was way under-seasoned. To top it all off, the service was few and far between.
