Unexpected Road Trip Gem! Stopped here on a cross-country drive from Salt Lake City to New York -- kind of in the middle of nowhere, but totally worth the stop. I ordered the FBI steak and WOW... better than some fancy steakhouses I've been to. Cooked perfectly and full of flavor. Service was super friendly and polite, which made the experience even better. They also have a solid selection of drinks and a good variety of beer on tap -- definitely didn't expect that out here! Tried walleye for the first time too -- really tasty! Just a heads-up: the seasoning on everything is pretty mild, so you might want to add a little salt, pepper, or ranch depending on your taste. Good food. Fast service. Easy in and out. Not much to compare to in the neighboring area so enjoy.

We had zero issues here- hit the spot. We rolled in around 4:45pm on a Tuesday, having just popped into this little town as tourists. It was empty. Like we had to wait a couple minutes for someone to come outta the back but we didn't mind. Our server was super sweet, helpful, and attentive. We both got burgerS. they were cooked and dressed as we asked. AND. The potato buns were buttered and toasted. Bonus points. Burger appeared to be a Bubba so it was hefty and fine quality. Handful of shoestring fries which were hot. I mean, can't really ask for much more. We overheard the server telling another table that it's the woman owner in the back cooking, as she has done for many many years. And it shows- it was just a burger and fries but care was taken in placing everything from the sandwich to the pickles on the plate. Would 100% patron again. Well, being from The south we season our food a lot more than the northern folks. The steak was tender but it had no seasoning and the waitress didn't come back in time to ask if we needed steak sauce. Maybe they don't use steak sauce? The salads and appetizers were good though read more

Wasn't sure what to expect but our dinners were surprisingly good. I got the special, chicken smothered with Swiss cheese and mushrooms. My husband got the Walleye. Both entrees came with a salad and a potato. The salad was good and had 1/2 a hard boiled egg on it. We walked in before 5 and had a drink while we waited for the cook to arrive. Obviously this place is a local favorite diner. Doesn't look like much on the outside, but the reviews had encouraged us in. A review said the chicken with mushrooms and Swiss (?) cheese was good and I agree. Hubby got the waitress's recommendations of whiskey sirloin steak, and he really enjoyed that as well. Since we were traveling, we asked for a restaurant recommendation at our hotel and they told us to go to Charly's. We had a wonderful dinner at Charly's! It was very small town, welcoming experience - it's not a fancy steakhouse. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was delicious, and the whiskey marinated steak was especially flavorful. Food was good, had Chislik, steak, mushrooms and grilled cheese. Cozy bar; good service. Good music! Was disappointed in a table of four locals who made fun of a local mentally challenged man. He was there having his daily after work coke and greeted everyone walking in the bar with a smile and hello. These asshats played nice with him by making disparaging comments he didn't understand, but they were having a laugh at his expense. It was all I could do to stop from cracking a bottle over their heads. Everyone I've met in the great state of South Dakota has been so nice. The steaks are huge and priced reasonably! Great quick service! They have wine and full bar. They even made a good bourbon and 7!! They even let us work the TV remote so we enjoyed "Impractical Jokers"! More of a pub vibe than a steak house, so be aware that it is not fancy. read more

After a long drive from Colorado I asked the desk clerk at the BW where the best place to eat was and she said Charley's without hesitation. The J&Q Super Deluxe Burger was just that, Super Deluxe! A hand pressed burger patty cooked on the flat top grill giving it that delicious flavor you can only get from a properly seared burger. Hot crispy fries with a cold bottle of ketchup keeping it fresh and delicious. We forgot that it was Saturday evening and the other major restaurant was closed for a wedding. The staff was very attentive and apologigized for the wait. The place needs a redo as the carpet is old and dirty but the food was great. Two of our party had walleye and they said it was fabulous and I had the stuffed shrimp and it was great. The food was quite good but they were slammed and so it took quite a while to get a waitress as there was only 2. Was defiantly a sports bar as the tv's were blaring and lots of males watching them. Enjoyed the drinks as well as they did not skimp on the alcohol. read more

Was sent here by folks at Butter Churn, not Yelp listed. I'm sitting here now and already had some salad bar testing. Handmade old-family type things are great find and appreciated. And really good. Apparently I am here prior to dinner time cook arrival, so need to wait. Ok so he must be near, as waitress has taken my food requests. Setting here has likely not changed for 50 years. I like it. This community is not yet big enough for some national chain stores, which is nice to see. Yes there are some but not WalMart yet. So, dinner is arrived and Filet is really nice. Baked potato same. Traveling cross country and Chamberlain was the driving day time-slotted stopping point. Yelp guided us here and all was good. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a burger and fried cod (frozen, but tasty). Portions were ample and salad bar was included with the cod. Bartender (E M ??) was friendly and spot on. Passing by on I90, determined to avoid franchise food and found Charly's. Turned out to be a perfect way to experience a bit of South Dakotan fare and "buy local". Chislic for appetizer -YUM!! Hubby had walleye and loved it. I enjoyed one of the specials for the evening, grilled chicken topped with melted Swiss cheese and sauted mushrooms - delicious - with baked potato and a very nice side salad. I ate here two nights in a row while I was in the area for work. Had terrible service the first night and thought it was a fluke. The table next to us came in 10 minutes after us and ordered the same things but got their food 5 minutes before us. The second night was the same thing. Had to go up to the bar and ask for more beer. Don't go if the waitress has her boyfriend and friends there. The food is alright with decent prices. read more

The only thing better than this trip back to the 70's would have been bumping into Pam Greer at the bar. We dropped in to Charlys around 10 PM. on a road trip back from Yellowstone. We were greeted by a large neon sign on the facade which beckoned us in. The wall was adorned with locals holding up their fish lines showing they had caught their limit. I can only guess that this is where Charlys sources it's walleye. The restaurant cannot have changed a bit since it opened, the wood paneling and gold accents were complimented by fantastic period sconces and hanging lights. The Coen brothers should really keep this in mind for their next shoot. The food was hot and fresh, the portions were generous and the beer was cold. The bartender was thoroughly enjoying some Lita Ford and Survivor although she was only 21, she had worked there since she was eleven. Do yourself a favor, stop in. Especially if you have a soft spot for period pieces. Ask Brooke at the bar if she is still planning on becoming an archaeologist or a astronaut. read more

Salad bar was a mess and really was nothing more than bagged salad and canned salads. Fried mushrooms were tasteless. Fried Wally tasted like it sat out for hours before serving. Maybe the had a bad night but did not feel that way. Staff was super friendly I will give them that. read more

I had a good rib eye steak sandwich for $10 Tender, flavorful and the waitress substituted tasty hashbrowns for the fries. Wife enjoyed a ham steak with a just fine salad bar. Waitress was attentive and pleasant. Menu is steaks, limited sandwich choices -mostly hamburger variations, but the appetizer menu will surprise you with some unusual options. Dining is next to bar and the noise crosses over. But it's a casual restaurant with pretty good food. No special kids menu. read more

I have to say I loved eating here. I went here because of the great reviews on Yelp. We travel a lot and I was tired of fast food. This place had some of the best Shiner on tap and the service was great. Our waitress was awesome, fast food and she was just great! I had the whiskey steak, which reminded me of BBQ. Stoped at Charly's on way by I-90. Classic old fisherman's bar and grill with great walleye. Our party had steak, salmon and chicken and everyone was happy. Go for the ambiance and because its the best there is around. read more
