This place is the original CHEERS and was around before the series. It's a place where everyone knows your name and you have a sense of belonging there. It's been a family owned business the whole time. The owner, Tara, is the granddaughter of Agnes & Charles Krajewski, who opened the place about 60 years ago. Casual and comfortable dive bar with authentic and meaningful memorabilia throughout. I was happy to see more than one bartender on staff while I was there, and each one had a fun and quirky disposition. The quirkiest, yet sweetest is the original owner's granddaughter, who now manages and basically runs the place with her Jersey vocabulary and knockout smile! A Lot of Fun The old school bar with patrons singing karaoke behind the bar on the stage. A unique spot with some very lively patrons that you can tell love this spot. That says a lot about a place. We hung around for a while and eventually had shots with an older man that I think has either worked there or maybe owns the place. This is when you know a place is friendly, because we entered a locals hangout bar knowing no one. After a couple of hours we were talking to everyone around us. Tip: Several deals on draft beers, but you have to ask for them. If your stuck in Secaucus and like real bars, you know there isn't much around. We stayed in the area to hit a Jets game at MetLife Stafium and thankfully we found this gem. LOVE this place. I've been going here periodically for years. The owner AND his lovely daughter Tara are very friendly and kind. Plus, Tara can sing like no other. Great vibe and karaoke of course! The decor is unique; reminds me of bars in Berlin (Germany). You can't take a bad picture here as the background is always colorful. When I have free time (which is rare) I go here to unwind. Man, what I would give to have been older in the early 80s. That is when this place was run directly by the original owner and Springsteen wanted to shoot a video at this jersey hole in the wall - at least that's the urban legend... Today, the daughter still runs the show, and man is she super awesome. The munchies there are cheap and great for when you're boozing. Tara is absolutely incredible, welcomes guests with open arms and is always up for a good chat. I've never felt like such a part of the family upon walking into a bar. Bar none...no pun intended...my favorite dive bar in the country. Cheap ass beers on tap, 1 pool table which means you wait your turn and meet great local patrons. Best local dive bar. Karaoke on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Staff is always friendly, as well as the regulars. They have a sign that says, "there are no strangers here, only friends that haven't met yet." That definitely fits the atmosphere at Charlie's. They have a kitchen, which is to say they can make anything fried you want. But I think most folks come here for the affordable drinks and the atmosphere. Small place. Cheap drinks. went on a Friday night and crowd seemed sparse. We went much later in the night, but it seems more like a local hangout than a place people would travel to for a night of drinking - which is fine for me. Very sparkly inside. Mirrors, some sparkly things hanging from the ceiling, golden lighting. Mixed crowd which ranged from young adults, to big burly bikers to hipsters with tattoos. Although one night can't explain the entire culture of a place, it did seem pretty chill with everyone just minding their own business with their specific group. The bar encircled the cash register so there isn't much room between the back of your seat and the wall. If you have friends who happen to be gingerbread men, this would be an ideal place to bring them. I guess it used to be a strip club which explains the circular bar design. Dig this - a friend and I who have not been in touch for over 35 years recently reconnected via Net - and were reliving former times. E.mailing about my coming home from dancing - regaling him with stories about the bar. Still lovingly remembered, (decades later!) with howls of glee. My best: the old couple that used to come in, anyway.. the wife was jealous of him flirting with the girls. So she would take his teeth.
