It was decent but I felt it was too overwhelming flavor and maybe I needed to try something else!

The facility itself was also really clean and well-maintained, which I always appreciate. That said... the food just didn't hit the way I expected. Everything was very salty, to the point where it kind of overpowered the flavor. I was excited to try it, but it ended up being a bit too much for my taste. Overall, great service and vibes, but I'd probably ask for lighter seasoning next time

The fresh-cut fries were a standout too... crispy, hot, and exactly how fries should be. We also tried the stuffed artichoke and that was next level. Upon entering, the place was dead with only one customer eating. Marcy took our order and she was not the kindest person. The food came out fresh after we waited for over 15 minutes, but was nothing special. Very greasy and lacked flavor. She was unprofessional on the phone talking to Uber Eats and it made the meal uncomfortable on top of the tacky and random marine animal decor and poor choice of music playing in the TV. Their restaurant is lacking severely in taste and hospitality. I patiently waited to request for sauces that she forgot to give and she made it seem like I was intruding and interrupting her. She looked over at our table with a rude look and was displeased to give us the ranch that is included in the combo meal. The cole slaw is shredded to pieces and has no bite, the catfish was undercooked and too soft, the shrimps still had shells under the batter, and the chicken wings were small. Everything was extremely oily. They are charging extra for hot sauce, but it literally is just Louisiana hot sauce in a tiny dipping cup. Our total for two meals was $33. You're better off going to another chicken and seafood restaurant for a better deal and price. I was going to do a food vlog at this place, but they are not worth the time wasted to edit and spotlight.

We were already in the area to check out Frank Lloyd Wright's studio and then came here for lunch afterwards. We were lucky that it was a Monday at lunch time and not a more traditional peak time to be there because we got a parking space fairly quickly and even though we saw the line out the door, it moved very fast. It's very much a cash-only and no-frills type of place. Don't come here expecting them to be super friendly to you. You go up there knowing what you want to order and they are quick and on it. When you're paying, they're already getting the other customer's (behind you) order. We went for an Italian beef sandwich to split as well as a side of fries and an Italian ice. Everything was excellent. Definitely the best Italian beef I've ever had and one of my friends said it was one of the best foods he had on his week trip here. Will definitely need to return!

Choosing an "off" night (example: a weeknight) or during a less-than-ideal time (example: during a snowstorm) will give you the quickest experience for Johnnie's as the line can get LONG and parking is terrible (tiny lot). Note: this was my second visit as my first attempt, on Father's Day 2025, was a magnificent bust. We had no line and plenty of seating this time! They have a big menu, but save the cute stuff for a follow-up visit and get a beef (& hot dog is really hungry). Do yourself a favor and get an Italian Ice too, time of year is irrelevant. You can thank me after your tastebuds recover from being overwhelmed. Is the food THAT much better than other spots, you ask? Not handedly, no. But the whole experience, especially if you wait in line (in the sun as there is zero shade), is what makes this place great. It really is a delightful Chicago experience. Put Johnnie's at the top of your list this summer, plan accordingly, and ENJOY!

The RC cola sign immediately took me back to my childhood and made me smile. We were greeted really warmly and had our questions answered about the menu. And when I tell you that jumbo polish sausage was worth every single calorie, I mean it. I had mine with everything except onions and relish. The hot peppers are spicy! In a great way! The sausage had a great snap when I bit into it and the classic polish sausage flavor was so good and perfectly spiced/seasoned. The bun was soft but didn't fall apart when I ate. The man who took our order was extremely nice and gave me a sample of the sloppy Joe to try as well. I felt like I was part of the neighborhood. The basket of fries was enormous and they were hot and fresh. RC tastes exactly like it did when I was a kid in Buffalo. The no-frills walk up counter/drive in style old-time atmosphere is retro-cool . We ate at one of the three standing tables . If I lived in Chicago, I would definitely be a regular at Mickey's. So I had to find a new Italian deli in the area and this place had an authentic Italian sub on the menu with prosciutto, Genoa salami, capicola, provolone cheese, Italian dressing, lettuce and tomato that I added raw onions, hot giardiniera and mayo. It's a deli/mini mart/gambling machine/cafe with friendly service. The meats were skimpy was my first thought, see my pictures. My first thought after taking the first bite was WOW this Italian hoagie bread was perfect/fresh with that great chew/pull. Even with the skimpy meat the whole combination with me tweaking the sandwich was so fu#king delicious I got a second one to take back to WI for dinner. The area probably has a better Italian deli the residents will tell you but I'm in town once a year so next year I will try another Italian deli until I find one to start a new tradition like my old friend for many years that is no more. My final thought is that the price point is similar to the chain sub restaurants with a high quality sub sandwich and why anyone in the area that goes to a chain with this gem is beyond me because they do an authentic Italian sub very well.
