I recently lucked up on getting a last minute table at this fantastic steak and seafood grill in Nashville. The interior was nicely appointed and the wait staff was very accommodating, polite, and efficient. There is a very nice parking garage around the corner and they will validate your parking. We started with some of the best fried crab claws that I've ever consumed (and I have consumed many a claw, I can assure you). The steaks were cooked to perfection and the redfish was delightfully prepared with an excellent preparation. The presentation of the dishes was a cut above. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences at Char previous to this. But last night was hands down the worst customer experience I have ever experienced in my 40 years. Because I have been such a regular, I'd accumulated $180 worth of points. When I arrived I let my server know in advance I'd be using my loyalty points. He was awesome at that point and said no problem. As there to treat my friend for her birthday dinner, she arrives, we order. I got the filet, a Caesar salad, and fried green tomatoes for the table. She ordered the prime rib and a wedge salad. My filet was cooked to perfection! Her prime rib was not cooked to order, so she asked for a new one. Turns out that was the last one so she ended up with a ribeye instead. Once received cooked to perfection. We enjoyed our evening, talking and laughing. Everything went severely downhill when we got to pay. I once again thanked Deke for everything and handed him my loyalty card. We owed $30 on top of what my points covered. Barbara was going to pay that and she gave her phone number for her loyalty points for that portion. He takes everything and comes back and says because he used her loyalty number to earn points we could not use my points to redeem the dinner. Absolutely not. I once again explained to him I told him in advance that was how we were paying, and her number was for the rest. He could not have been ruder if he tried. After much back and forth, he comes back to the table, does not look at us, and THREW THE CHECK BACK. It went flying across the table. When I say threw, I mean threw. Deke should sign up for his community baseball team, great pitcher candidate. 10/10 worst service of my life. Will I be back? Yes because the food is great! But if I see that man walking toward my table I will immediately stand up and ask for a new table. Incredibly disrespectful and I will not tolerate that again. I had loyalty points because I am there so often. You shouldn't treat anyone in the fashion he demonstrated, let alone one of your most loyal customers. read more

My wife and I have been here before and decided to stop by again for a quick brunch around 11-12 on a Saturday. Make sure to scan the QR code once you get inside for your parking validation! We were seated immediately and our server quickly stopped by to fill our waters and grab our drink orders. We started off with $6 Bloody Mary's, which were great. We also ordered the new cornbread with strawberry jam. My wife thought it was delicious, which is saying something because she grades cornbread very harshly. The food is superb. We were there at 2:00pm on a Saturday and it was relaxing and jazzy. We started with the crab cakes and I was so pleasantly surprised. Being a coastal girl I had no expectations but every bite was all crab and delicious. The cocktails are terrific. I had the blood orange spritzer....a perfect mid-day treat. Due to the response from the restaurant I am updating my review. The food was good. The service was also good. The communication was not good at all. Being told to leave a place can feel like an attack. Especially if it did not seem like it was deserved and came out of left field. That's how I took it. My friend made a reservation, but we were running behind and then with traffic we realized we might miss the grace period. She called ahead, and the hostess kindly assured us that they would hold our table. We were even okay to try and find something else in green hills (it was on us). So when we arrived the hostess greeted us and started to take us to our table but an auburn haired manager decided she needed to scold us for being late. Instead of welcoming us, she chose to lecture us about how being late was "unacceptable behavior." It wasn't a quick reminder; it was a condescending rant meant to put us in our place. The tone she used with my friend, an African American woman, was especially disturbing. There's a long, painful history of Black people being spoken down to in this exact way. Like being scolded or diminished, no matter their age, status, or setting. That's what this interaction felt like. We even asked if the table had been given away, could we get on the waitlist while we looked for another spot. The hostess reassured us it was saved. Sure enough, when we sat down, there were four open tables in plain view. It was clear this wasn't about logistics. It was about control and disrespect. Ryan our server was lovely but the steak needed a little more seasoning but a great "char". The mashed potatoes were bland and dry. Though our sautéed crab claws were great. Bottom line: the restaurant looks good, but the leadership's rude, unprofessional behavior is embarrassing. Save yourself the frustration. Until management changes, spend your money somewhere that actually values its guests. read more

Char was a solid 5 star restaurant from the time they opened until a couple of years ago. For too long now it's been hit and miss. After my last review I got a call from Carol Johnson. Basically an apology, that they would do better, but that was about it. I wouldn't dare order Steak Frites there again, but my wife and I went for lunch and it was very good. I ordered a cup of Lobster Bisque. For entrées I ordered the Char Burger and my wife ordered the Ginger Peanut Salad. Overall a pleasant surprise. Soup was very good. Burger was cooked perfectly (medium), and a nice pile of onion rings. The salad with chicken is my wife's favorite thing there, and she was pleased. Service was first class; Kendon R was one of the best servers I've had there in years. We had a nice private booth, and the restaurant continues to be in tip top shape. Family brunch in an excellent, fine dining, with good appetizers; the PEI Mussels continue to be some of the best we've had, and the crab claws were tiny, but you get a lot of them and have excellent flavor! The salmon is done to order, and has a distinct spice to it. For dessert the Chocolate Brownie is warm and delicious. We have been disappointed the last few times we have been there. We are in the neighborhood, so it "use to be" our go to. But last night we went to the bar before closing time, which is at 10. We were totally rushed out and were told right away too late to order food. Which was ok, but then it was too late to even order a coffee. The staff was completely annoyed we were there, even though we both had a nightcap. We both felt like they couldn't wait to push us out. I guess it's hard to understand how a restaurant of this caliber closes shop at 10 on a Friday night. I understand the restaurant, but most high-end restaurants keep the bar open. Went recently for lunch during the week. I was sad they were out of crab claws so I couldn't really decide on what to get. My boyfriend got the country fried pork chop and he really liked that. I got the Nola barbecue shrimp and grits. It had a kick to it and was pretty tasty. Our server was great too. He brought out bread for me because he said it went well with my dish. We enjoyed the crab cakes as well and we cleared up our plates. I've also gone to the weekend brunches as well and the food is always good. It's on "regular" go to spot. read more

The demi-glace was the thinnest, most flavorless, bland liquid slop that, for all that the meal was wonderful, had me leave the restaurant on a low note. A home cook could have executed it better. We were having brunch to celebrate my mom's birthday. The ambiance was nice and it was not very busy. The food was good and no one had any complaints. Had it not been not being forewarned of a cake charge, I would have gave 5 stars. To charge $2/person for us to eat our own cake doesn't seem kosher. We would have enjoyed it at home rather than being in and be charged to do so. Party of 14 they collected $28 for nothing in return. Most ordered the chicken and waffles. The only concern was the number of tenders. Taste wise, they enjoyed the waffle and chicken was perfectly seasoned. I wanted to pick something new that looked good for my husband's birthday dinner and let me tell you it did not disappoint. From start to finish it was simply amazing. They bring you a delicious loaf of fresh bread and butter. I tried not to fill up on it knowing we had crab cakes coming. These crab cakes are to die for. No fillers and the best light lemon butter on top. Just delicious crab stacked up drizzled. Yum! I was torn on what to get, but ended up with the seafood carbonara and again, it did not fail me. I actually had it for 3 meals because it was so rich and filling. I did leave the bacon off by choice. The shrimp were large and cooked just right. The highlight of the meal though was the duck. That was probably the best duck I've ever had and I only had two small bites. My husband absolutely loved it. The blueberry was light without being too sweet. The seasoning was not salty. The broccolini was slightly crunchy but perfectly steamed. The sweet potatoes; oh were they heavenly. To finish it off, the waitress surprised him with a small serving of birthday cake gelato. We want to say we liked that, but it gave us diabetes with how sweet it was. The thought was super appreciated, but it was very rich. The staff was amazing from top to bottom. Our waitress made sure our drinks were filled and told us about everything on the menu. She was top notch! The building itself is across from Green Hills making parking look hard, but they offer 2 hour free parking in the parking garage connected. You scan the barcode and get your parking for free. Can easily be seen as a romantic meal or a get together place for friends/coworkers. As far as pricing goes, it isn't cheap, but it's not expensive either. $31 for the duck meal was absolutely worth it. Nothing lacked for the pricing. We will be back again without a doubt! read more

Excellent in every way; we were seated immediately upon arrival, Valet parking is the way to go- but it is not connected to Char. Our server Klara was attentive and knowledgeable of the menu- she made a couple of excellent suggestions. I ordered the grilled salmon (rare) over grilled zuchinni and squash- it was perfect and the portion was very generous. My wife order the Prime Rib which was mouth watering- she likes it prepared medium and it was perfect with a delicious and steaming hot baked potatoe. This was my first visit for lunch. I was impressed. It was classy and they had a live jazz band playing low. The food was good quality and tasted very good and fresh. It's moderately priced. We had excellent service and the food came out in a very timely manner. We were in and out in under an hour. They do have a full bar. We had a very pleasant experience. There is paid valet parking or you can park in the garage right next door and the restaurant will validate parking for 2 hours. They also had plenty of outdoor seating. They kept the potato skin on, which made them look kind of unappealing and honestly made me lose my appetite a bit. Just went there for the first time tonight and will absolutely be back. My date and I got the calamari and truffle fries as sides to share and both were incredible. I was incredibly shocked because they were both only 10 dollars and the portion sizes were huge. I got a ribeye (the 16 oz) and she got the dusted redfish. The fish was shockingly good, but it was really elevated after I squeezed a bit of lemon on it. I'm not a seafood guy but definitely a 10/10, it was incredible. Onto my ribeye. This was one of the best things I've tasted hands down. It was cooked beautifully, the char/sear/whatever you wanna call really elevated it for me. It made the steak look incredibly appealing and gave it this beautiful crust. To be honest I kind of expected it to be a bit tougher with such a well developed crust, but it was so so tender. The balance between seasoning and the juices of the steak was incredible, and I had to force myself to share it with my date and our friends (we were in a party of 6 so we shared pretty much everything.) not only that but our server was awesome. I don't remember his name but he was incredibly humorous and professional at the same time! Additionally, the atmosphere was really awesome, I'm not a big fan of dressing up but i had a formal to go to tonight and having such a great dinner spot with awesome food and service really put me in a better mood. My bill for my date and I was around 150 and some change, it was worth every penny. Seriously every penny. Being a broke high school kid, I'm not usually very eager to part with my money but the food and the service was something I'd pay double for without batting an eye. The only downside to this place was that they charge a 20% gratuity (no problem at all) but they didn't leave any where for me to leave a tip on either copies. I didn't have any cash and I was just so impressed all around that I wanted to leave a nice tip, but where the option is on the bill usually they just had a printout adding a gratuity fee to the bill. Feel free to take my review with a grain of salt because it means more ribeye for me! read more
