Really wanted to give this place more stars. We've been looking for a good Mexican place for a long time. Here goes: this place is chronically understaffed; we waited over 10 minutes for a menu and a drink order in a nearly empty restaurant. Then after ordering what should be basic food we waited a half an hour for our order. A bowl of watery green salsa came to the table with the menus. What's that for? The pozole was also a watery bowl of (well-seasoned) broth, but although tasty the pozole and meat were long gone before the bowl was 1/4 empty. We ordered sopes and gorditas. The gorditas never showed up. The margaritas weren't bad but nothing special either. Overall 3 stars for the flavors but man, I really wanted to give this place more. Edit. Terrible restaurant. To start the experience... the server took an entire hour to bring chips and straight out of the can salsa (which we requested 4 different times). Then an additional 30 minutes for the food. Then the issue with the water... from the moment we sat down and receive our cup of water... we didn't receive a refill until I had already finished my dinner, and had to get up from my table, and request it from the cashier. I took a friend of mine who is Hondureña (cause they had Balleadas), and the Balleada was like a flat tortilla with two spoonful scoops of beans and cheese sauce. It was so bland, and basic. Very authentic food and atmosphere. The menu is pretty extensive with lots of options including combos if you cant decide. Every few nights they setup and cook outside in a very family friendly fashion. I would recommend the steak or the "pastor" (sweet pork) tacos. When they setup outside to make tacos there's usually quite a line but it goes quickly and totally worth it. If you eat inside the service isn't that great and its much slower in my experience. This is my all time favorite Mexican Restaurant. It's authentic and has a lot of flavor in the meat. I always get the carne asada tacos with a side of refried beans and rice. It's a simple dish that's topped with carne asada and onions and cilantro, when you squeeze a piece of lime to it, it adds a tangy taste it it. I definitely recommend this place if your looking for a Mexican restaurant. They even have convenient late night hours. Also they serve horchata and frozen fruit smoothie. This is the 2nd authentic Mexican Restaurant we've found in our neighborhood. You can never have to much tacos from different restaurants, but we love the tacos here. It's simple, delicious and addicting. We've eaten here and had takeouts quite a few times. The fallback about eating dine-in is that the restaurant is in need of major upgrade. The tables and booths are very outdated and not stable, we've actually sat at a middle table and the table rocked so much I accidentally knocked down the cup of water. Not good at all. We try to look pass all that because we came here for the food. For appetizer, we ordered the Carne Asada Nachos and this is one of our favorite dishes. They top it with refried beans, lettuce, tomato, mayo spread and of course the Carne Asada. I love how they serve this warm and the cheese that smothers the chips...mmmm! Besides the nachos, I ordered the Elote, which is the mexican corn with mayo spread, sprinkled cheese, lime and chili powder. I was extremely disappointed in this dish, they gave it to me in a plastic cup with "canned" corn, warmed up with mayo and sprinkled cheese. First of all, this is suppose to be served as a whole corn on a cob. Did not expect this at all. Please avoid ordering this. For my main dish, I order the Al Pastor (sweet pork) Taco with a side of refried beans and rice. One of my favorite entrees. I used to order the Horchata drink, which is sweet milk but they've been making waaay too sweet than it already is. So I stopped ordering this and stuck with the fruit smoothies, mango is my favorite. They have it frozen and blend it with either water or milk and ice. Either way, it's delicious. read more

This place was absolutely disappointing. The cheese pupusa's were totally flat, barely had a hint of cheese, and we're basically just tortillas. The pupusa's revueltas didn't have cheese and were mostly dough. The curtido was not flavorful nor tangy and for some reason it was a yellow/orange color. I'm half Mexican and from Chicago. I know good Mexican food when I eat it! Heck even just smelling it! I've sat inside this restaurant on a few occasions now but hands down, the best time to go is after hours, between 9pm-2am or so when they're outside the front door cooking on a skillet of sorts, making FRESH, delicious tacos right in front of you! They're small (which real Mexican tacos are) with basic cilantro and cebolla (onion) toppings along with some sauces and lime options on the side. I can EASILY inhale 3-5 carne asada tacos in one sitting, in seconds, haha! This is literally a hole in the wall but of course that's often where you can find the best food! The decor is simple but authentic, some Mexican art, soccer on tv, and beer options. The bathroom is not the best but not the worst either. Running toilet and water works for me! The larger room of the restaurant turns into a Mexican nightclub at night so ladies beware if going alone... I'm sure you will get a few admirers! Continuing to suffer through a horrible stretch of taco addiction, I tried this place having read a good review in the New Times. You walk into what you may think is a very small convenience store. When we did enter, we were the only ones in the place. Really. There wasn't even a waiter to greet us. Eventually, we were led to the restaurant, which is really a handful of tables spread out in a big bar/dance hall (see photo). This place is beat up and can be best described as Mexican honky tonk. After a drink order was placed, we eventually received our beers (served barely below room temperature) and a basket of chips and salsa verde (see photo). Somewhat warm beers is not okay. The chips seemed liked they had been cooked hours earlier, but were crispy. I did enjoy the salsa verde, which had a nice but not overpowering kick of heat. Okay folks. This place is dirt cheap. Tacos can run $1.95. For that reason, I ordered like I was a food critic. The wife had the chimichanga with steak. I had two tacos (barbacoa and chorizo) and a chicken burrito. The chimichanga and burrito came first. The burrito literally was a foot long (see photo). At first, I did not think it any special. But the more I kept eating, the better it got. The rice was good inside and the refried beans had real flavor. Plus, the chicken was surprisingly moist. The chimichanga was the hands down winner. At first, when the wife picked it up and the oil poured out, it did look like things would end well here. But wow, it was really good. The outside was as crunchy as I ever remember a chimichanga being. (Granted, you could easily hear the crunch since no one was in the restaurant.) The steak inside had a ton of flavor. This is a must try. The tacos finally came and were a little disappointing. While piping hot, the chorizo was dry and I did not find the barbacoa flavor that appealing. For all of the knocks (the service was pretty bad), I did like this place. It is not the newest or the cleanest. But I liked the vibe for some reason. I can't put my finger on it. We went to Chapultepec on a Sunday early evening. A friend recommended it to us, warning us that it is a "hole in the wall" type of place, but the food is good. So we decided to give it a shot. When we arrived the parking lot was empty. (generally not a good sign, but we kept in mind the time that we came) The place smelled and looked funky. The AC wasn't working. The restaurant looked dirty too. Honestly, I wanted to leave it almost right away, but... well.. it's a long story. We stayed. I really wanted to prove my gut feeling to be wrong and wanted this place to turn out a diamond in the rough.. Unfortunately, the food did not impressed us either. My chicken burrito lacked flavor and was kind of "blah".. After we ate, I went to the bathroom, and... chose not to use it. It was disgusting. I heard somewhere that if a restaurant's bathroom is dirty, typically so is the kitchen. I don't mind a "hole in the wall" if the food is great.. but this place is not for me. Friday Night Post-Drinking Taco Run Let's just say, I ended up sitting in the back of a pick-up truck with friends and a few Mexican dudes talking smack, laughing, and eating some super cheap tacos. The cook was outside cooking up some great food (not sure if the inside was closed) 2. Weekday Lunch Came here the following week to try them out for lunch. We basically had the place to ourselves. The service was great, the food was still fantastic when sober. The quesadillas, tacos al pastor, and burrito all received 5 stars from our party - and the bill? Negligible. I am surprised so many folks review this place as very authentic. I guess I wouldn't know, but I'm not sure if authentic Mexican food has Kraft parmesan cheese sprinkled on everything. Was the food good? Very. Everything was cheesy and well-seasoned. Was our waittress, Amelia, who spoke only Spanish, friendly, helpful, and catering to my weakness in attractive servers? Absolutely. Great service. A notable perk was the decently-priced beers. Anyway, I ordered a Negra Modelo and alas! Chapultepec was out of chile rellenos. So I got a combination, which maybe the waitress suggested because I look white. The chimichanga was definitely the best part of my combo. All in all, the place is fine. Came to Chapultepec for authentic Mexican tacos and upon arrival we encountered way more than just authentic food! From the music, to the paintings on the wall, the decorations, and the people inside, this was a full-on Mexican experience. The tacos were ok, they are "authentic" so they were very simple but tasty. The service was great, and we got really, really good micheladas. I was actually not a fan of the guac, which was very watery and lacked flavor. Overall this was a very cheap lunch date. We found ourselves nearby on Sunday - not an area we frequent so thank you yelpers for finding this place for us. We may actually come back just to eat here. It is the proverbial hole in the wall. Little for ambiance - a Mexican themed mural and tile on one wall, soccer on the tube, Mexican music a bit on the loud side. Not the cleanest looking place either, the two booths have beat up cloth cushions, the one bench I first sat on was damp from a previous mishap. So we moved to a table - the tables and chairs are pretty basic but at least are not beat up and are clean - they need to dump those cloth cushions and get something wet-proof so they can be washed down. The starter salsa is diced up fresh with fresh cilantro for a nice bright tasty beginning, the tortilla chips tasted home made and thankfully only very lightly salted. If you like heat, pile on the green sauce - smokin! They smartly serve it on the side and the waitress warned us - "hot" - so you are not forced to have either too mild or too hot salsa, adjust your own to your preference. I had a combo plate. I'm not big on steak or beef but I like sausage, I did not see chorizo as an option but they accommodated with no up charge. My other filler was chicken and my wife had the enchilada verde plate with chicken and cheese and beef. The chicken was well cooked all white meat but not dried out at all. The chorizo had a mild heat and I opted for mild heat for my enchilada sauce and it was all tasty. My wife opted for medium heat and she found medium just a bit more than she expected, but she still liked her meal. All was fresh and tasty. The rice was about the best I've had at a Mexican meal. Not sure what the dude fussing about the Parmesan cheese was talking about. We had crumbled queso fresco or whatever they call the mild crumbled mexican cheese - it was not parmesan! It was fine, a very mild cheese. Unfortunately we don't live closer to frequent this place, but we will come back. I hope they do well and stick around, since moving to S FL this is the first Mexican food we've found. Not much around these parts apparently. Its a hidden gem right off of Hallandale Beach Blvd. The dining room is a little awkward, maybe they need more tables? My bf and I were disappointed they were out of tamales and taquitos, but drowned our sorrows with a GIANT chicken burrito and steak chimichanga, and were completely satisfied. I ordered a steak burrito and it was average at best, nothing special. The appetizer was a cheese quesadilla and it was pretty good. The frozen mango smoothie was really good. The atmosphere is not the best. It reminded me of the movie From Dusk til Dawn by Quentin Terintino. Could definitely use an upgrade in that area. The complimentary chips and salsa were brought out, the salsa (verde) was top-rate, but the chips you could tell they just fried a batch at opening and served them all day.
