A nice alternative coffee shop on the edge of a believed bohemian area. It's small inside with few seats. The range of coffee is good with a choices of brewed coffee if u choose the "brühkaffee" (see pics) The choice of cakes / cookies was limited, which was a shame because the Germans know how to make amazing cakes. I had a cookie with cranberries which was soft and delicious. Also I tried one with peanuts which was quite hard and crunchy. The flat white was not disappointing but I wished I had tried a 'brühkaffee'!!! read more

One of Berlin's best specialty coffee shops --must visit! They are especially strong with brews (siphon and V60), always having 4-5 different single-origin coffees for tasting. Note that seating inside and outside is very limited, and there is no toilet. read more

This is a fabulous coffee house. If you don't speak German that's fine, they speak perfect English. The selection of roasts is phenomenal and the espresso is perfect, bold and strong. There isn't a lot of room to sit inside, but most people take out anyway so the sitting room that is there is generally open. They also have a great selection of Danishes and croissants. Very fresh and soft. Not to mention the guy who served me my latte did a lovely design in the foam (it's something small, but definitely a lovely touch :)). read more

Yesterday was my first but defo not last time at Chapter One Coffee in Berlin. Loved the interior and set up of the shop and they even have a few chairs outside to catch some sun while enjoying your coffee. As I love my freshly brewed filter coffee ala V60, Chemex or Areopress I was delighted to avail of their filter option. To top this even a bit more you are able to choose from 5 different coffee blend origins. I went for the Ethiopian one which was absolutely divine. Its kind hit you on the rich semi dry taste but leads to a fresh and citrusy finish. Along with the filter we ordered a Matcha latte which was finally made to the standard and quality taste we used to drink our Matcha but weren't lucky in Berlin yet. This ,the excellent coffee, well have to give the other 4 options a try and the friendly service will make us come back soon. read more

Berlin's a city where the quality of coffee perches at two extremes: you can get a cappuccino with a push of a button in many quick-stop bakeries or can enjoy a (quite dark) espresso in cafés that take their coffee more seriously, but without much wider variation and with filter coffee being an endangered species. i think this is changing, certainly with the rise of some really high-quality small cafés and roasters, where the focus rests squarely on the COFFEE. (e.g. Five Elephant, Double Eye, The Barn, No Fire No Glory...). the newbie to my list of favorites is Chapter One Coffee. this little shop's location --on a shady residential street, just a short walk from the bustle of the u7 on Gneisenaustrasse and the Marheineke Markthalle-- is really fantastically suited to taking a break and enjoying a good cup of coffee. you get the impression they're still sorting out their layout - the stools on the sidewalk are simple and the spots for lingering inside are mostly counters on the walls, except for a cozy+covetable windowseat (see some pics here: http://www.specialtycoffee.nl/nieuws/recent/artikel/728/chapter-1-new-coffee-hot-spot-in-berlin/). this doesn't bother me one bit - the sparse interior, with lovely weathered floor tiling and classic Werkstattlampen, gave me the feeling of being in a friend's kitchen and drew me to linger at the counter, like I would when a friend is cooking.... ...and maybe this is the point: front and center on the wooden counter is a Bonmac Hikari coffee siphon, with a trio of brewing pots looking a bit like a Buck Rogers chemistry set, especially when the heating elements are glowing. this vacuum technique --using water vapor to drive the brewing of a really pristine cup of coffee-- may sound a bit foreign and that's because, at this point, Chapter One is the sole coffeebar in Germany that has such a device. this technique is all-the-rage in San Francisco now, where i feel it's actually gone a bit wrong - people have gotten so locked in the *idea* of specialty brewing that price and snobbery have in some cases gotten out of hand. this couldn't be more saddening, since siphoning coffee really does make a difference to the taste...and making this technique accessible is where Chapter One shines. all the beverages, from the usual run of espresso drinks to filter coffee to the siphon coffees, will take nearly the same time to make and run you about the same price. the owners, Nora and Björn, are excited to not only make damn good, locally-sourced coffee (mostly from small roasters around Germany), but also to teach their patrons to get more out of their cup-o-joe (if they're interested). this extends to their future goal for public coffee events, ranging from cuppings to lectures to brew trainings. there are afew tasty morsels at the counter --yummy muesli cookies made by Nora's mom, shortbread, and franzbrötchen from a small Hamburg bakery-- with simple sandwiches planned for down the road (e.g. ham+cheese from the owner's relatives, on homemade bread). for now, though, the focus is --happily-- on the brew. read more

Cozy space on a side street. Excellent coffee (I had an americano with no sugar or milk...this is what I normally drink and the one here was great) and one of the best croissants I've ever had (I prefer it to many that I tried in Paris even, but is a slightly different style, not as crisp on the outside)....had a plain croissant but they also had interesting flavours like kiwi. Was only visiting Berlin but wish I could go back soon to try the other croissants! A very nice experience. read more

Make no mistake, the coffee at Chapter One is excellent. Aside from having a range of high-quality beans to select from, C1 allows you to choose from a range of preparations - Syphon, Chemex, Aeropress, etc. However, the space barely allows one to enjoy their coffee in the time and comfort it warrants. Seating is extremely limited, and rather uncomfortable. Wifi is also not available, although there is really no appropriate space to set up a laptop either. Even if their coffee can't quite compete, I would thus take Cuccuma, barely a block away, almost any day. read more

Best coffee in the area! Pastries are quite good too. Unfortunately the sitting options are not great (only a few which arent particularly comfortable) but the coffee makes up for it! Staff is always pleasant and I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for my coffee. Highly recommend! read more

Friendly baristas, delicious coffee brewed in a variety of ways, lovely latte art, sandwiches and pastries. Small shop, chill vibe and hip decor. Not a great spot for settling in to work with your laptop. A better place to grab a flat white with a friend. read more

Felt like we were back in Brooklyn when we visited Chapter One. Coffee was great and the pastries weren't bad either (though there were lots of bees flying around them - bees seemed to be pretty omnipresent in Berlin though). This cafe is definitely not ideal if you're looking for a place to sit with your laptop and do work all day as the seating space is limited to the window seat. We ended up sitting outside on the makeshift benches they had set up with everyone else who was getting coffee. Was a lovely little breakfast. read more
