This place is dark, dirty, it smells dirty and the food is typical saloon food. Don't bother.

Food is great and I would go more often is service was a little better. Not quick to refill, greet you or pay you out. Friendly but slow!

Service can be erratic and clannish. The seasoned wait staff usually go straight to the regulars or larger parties. The inexperienced wait staff get everyone else. They try hard. It can get loud in here as the open bar spills straight into the restaurant. Decor is Gar Wood nautical. Crowd is full of boaters and haggard Algonac locals...think deep wrinkles, blotchy skin, cigarette coughs, and the exchanging of muskrat recipes.

That's how I'd describe Catch 22. This does not look like a cutting edge restaurant. It looks like the kind of restaurant your parents ate at in the 80s (and the kind I ate at in the 80s). That's not totally fair, because it does have a nautical charm that represents the community. But, of course, the food is what matters most. It starts right away with freshly baked bread (how many places since the 80s do that anymore?). It was served with a sweet butter, but they have no problem providing a regular butter. We were told the mushroom soup was good, but the waitress undersold it. It was rich and savory and flavorful, the kind of soup that makes you wish you were at home so you could lick the bowl. My wife was territorial about sharing her salmon, with good reason. This is a fishing community that prides itself on the quality of its seafood. I loved the flawless preparation of the sliver of salmon she reluctantly shared with me. I didn't mind because the ahi tuna was magical. I offered her some, but she was happy with her salmon. Her loss. I ordered it medium rare; I enjoy my tuna steak the way I enjoy my beef steak. And, this was a beautiful cut of tuna. It was encrusted in peppercorns and sesame seeds, giving it a little bite. Take that, Gordon Ramsay! I got it with a side of perfectly lumpy mashed potatoes, with robust dark gravy on the side. Combined with the tuna, it was a lot of food, but there was never any doubt I was going to eat every bit of it. I ordered a local brew, Anchor Bay Noble Mutt red ale. Not as malty as a typical red, which I enjoyed. It didn't interfere with the meal. The service was also very quick, and cheerfully rendered by our server. It's not cheap, but there's no way something that good should ever be cheap. We're already trying to figure out the next time we can come back here.

The White Horse Inn is always a favorite. It's suitable for any occasion, dress up or dress down,…read moreand you and your party will still be comfortable and enjoy a great meal. Some of my favorites are the potato chip fish, the classic turkey dinner, and always the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies (to eat there or take home for later). While I haven't tried the igloos yet since I have an aversion to driving when it may snow, inside is always fun (while it's large, the vibe is cozy with tons of details), and outside is great in the late spring and summer for sure.

This place started as a stage coach stop not a Rest stop like we have along our highways now. Horses were a mode of transportation not engine powered car or trucks. We go back in time where everything went slower. Walking in, the huge fireplace, the beautiful wood floors, the lighting, nice touch with the hurricane oil lamps that have been converted to provide lights. The simple abstract horse drawings on the wall, all to help take you back to a time long ago. The food is simple but modernized with today's flair, everything from Rueben sandwiches to Salmon to meatloaf and more. We have been here now several dozen times and can tell you Kelly((manager) and her crew our awesome. Many of them have been here a long time. Everyone is sweet and nice and will take the time to converse and answer a history question, if you dare ask. This place is worth coming to, though I recommend a reservation, it helps. So pack up your car and prepare yourself to visit a magical place. Set back in time.
