This restaurant is teetering between being good and being not good. The reason is that the food is GREAT but the staff has extremely POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. My food was not cooked properly and the staff (more than one staff member) had the audacity to argue with me instead of apologizing! The ONLY saving grace to the staff was a young lady named Brandy. The food isn't the same and the service sucks! I ordered about $100 in food for delivery. One meal was steak with shrimp mashed potatoes and asparagus. Granted I know the mashed potatoes would have gravy but they packaged everything in one container and it came looking like grease soup! I called for help and the manager "was too busy to come to the phone." So after waiting for and paying for delivery I dressed and drove there only to encounter the same teenager who answered my call and notified me the manager was too busy to address a customer. Back to it... while saying what I wanted (which was the food redone and packaged correctly) he cut me off got an attitude and walked away leaving the teenager to communicate to the chef what was needed. Since my last review I have been to Chant several times and tried other items including the fried chicken. My sister was in town and I took her there last week. I ordered the fried chicken again and I even told her it was delicious. But not this time. The crust was very, very brown and hard. I could hardly eat it. I mean extremely hard. Went to Chant for the first time. I like the ambiance, but the seating is not to my liking. The staff was very attentive, to our needs. I ordered the Lamb chops, but they were more like Lamb chop lollipops. Should've stated that on the menu. The sauce used was kinda greasy, and dripped on my white dress. Nice spot with a nice atmosphere. I love the live music with the band playing all the old school cuts like prince and earth wind & fire. Yes, it can get kinda loud if you're trying to talk, but the live music does not start until later in the evening. It's not a very big spot and comes off kinda intimate with the lights being nicely dimmed and see why when my girlfriend and I were here there were a lot of couples. If you're looking for a nice date spot, this is your place. They do not take reservations on the weekend, so we were a little worried about the wait time, but when we got there at 7 pm on Saturday we were seated immediately. Our waiter was a really nice young lady who was attentive and kind. She gave us just the right amount of attention, not too much and not lacking. I ordered the shrimp and chicken gumbo with the side of corn bread and it was good. My friend ordered the salmon and she said it was good too. We also ordered the wings and they were a hit as well. The food came super fast! I mean we were not even done with our wings when the food came out. I guess if you get there at 7 pm you avoid the dinner/evening rush because people did not start coming in until like 8 pm. For drinks we both ordered a pear martini and the peach passion martini and they both were really good, but kinda lacked alcohol. The price points were not bad though. I paid $18 for the shrimp and chicken gumbo and they give you really nice size portions. Most of their martinis are $8, unless you go with the specialty ones and then you pay $12. Parking is something to deal with. I drove around for 15 minutes looking for a park but that's typical for Hyde Park, especially now with all the new restaurants and stores. I did notice a paid garage on 53rd and Harper (next to the Hyde Park Theater), so that's an option as well if you get tired of trying to come up on a street metered park. Wasn't a fan but wasn't too disappointed. We were a group of theee and seated right away. The waitress took forever to come to our table. By the time she came we knew everything we wanted to eat and drink lol. I started with crab cakes, pretty good. The salmon was pretty good too. This town is super crowded and there is no parking. The food was not so good. The Drunkin Noodles were super salty. The Tofu was tough. There were no vegetables. The pad see ew was only ok. A lot of noodles, salty sauce, and tough Tofu. The 2 shrimp tacos were so small. This was not enough for my husband. He ate some of my meal too, but we all agree that it was too salty. For $20 it was damn good!!! I like my steak med-rare. It was cooked correctly, but still slightly chewy. Again, you get what you pay for, and all that good for $20 a little chewiness isn't the worst thing on the world. I couldn't decide which red wine I wanted AJ the bartender offered two give me samples of both to help me decide, and he brought both. Titles over and poured in front of me in two separate glasses. Turkey & basil rolls were ok. Crab & lobster etouffe...watery tomato soup. The lobster tails were over cooked and there was no crab & no flavor. I have been coming to Chants for years now, and every time I come it has always been pleasant and the food amazing. Today, was the absolute worse experience I've had here. I'm only rating them two stars and not one because of the positive past experiences I have had. The waitress Juan, was very rude, unpleasant, unkind, and downright disrespectful. I ordered the traditional pear martinis and I had a bug in my drink. (Not that big of a deal) However, when I told the waitress Juan, he was unapologetic and acted as if a bug in my drink was not an issue. My food was good, however my friend's food was not. She ordered the shrimp dish and was not expecting what she got. We politely let Juan know and he immediately reacted aggressively. He snatched her food and walked away. Once Juan came around, I asked if he could come to the table and he put his finger up to give me the notion that he needed a second before coming to my table. He tended to other people's tables, gave other tables water, food, checks, and took orders. I continued to wait for him to come to the table and he did not. I then asked for the manager. Came here over the weekend for Brunch with my Sister. To start, the bottomless mimosas didn't disappoint! I ordered the short rib and grits and my Sister had the catfish and johnny cakes. Food was cooked to perfection and went above our expectations. The portion sizes allowed us to feel satiated and we had enough for leftovers as well. The vibe is very welcoming and relaxed. The Lobster Mac and Cheese was average but no flavor. My husband ordered the Gumbo, it was like green gel. He sent it back and ordered the Strip Steak and grill shrimp. The steak was fatty and a poor cut, the shrimp seem like it was cocktail shrimps, not grilled. We expect marbling/fat with rib eye steak, but New York strips are a leaner cut. Seasoning. It's important...crucial, in fact, and this place just didn't get that. Ordered the flaming shrimp pasta dish, which looked absolutely mouth watering upon its arrival to my table, but was sorely lacking in flavor. Shrimp tasted like they were simply tossed onto the pasta in the spicy sauce and the poor innocent pasta just lay there like it was boiled in unsalted water. No love, I tell ya! When dealing with pasta and especially pasta with sauces, you simply MUST season that water or else it's just a wet bland old noodle! You also should ensure that every layer of food has been hit with flavor...season the shrimp, boil the pasta in salt, combine everything, and then check for seasoning again! I also ordered the chicken skewers appetizer and it, too, was bland. I did, however, appreciate the sauces it came with (one green wasabi or avocado and one sweet honey-ish one). It seems every time I come here I meet new friends who are so friendly, down to Earth and funny. Food: Wings! To die for! That sauce has me licking my fingers every time!!! Crab Rangoon is soooo good and HUGE! You get your $ worth! The salmon, fried chicken( not your average... 2 large boneless breasts!!!)and the sautéed shrimp plate (I dream about and crave this dish often) are a few of the best entrees I've had. I have yet to go wild and try anything else! Maybe soon... And the best part: THE DRINKS!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE infused drinks!!! 3.5 Stars We were at the Silver Room opening reception party and were feeling a little hungry. Chant was right across the street! First off I love Hyde Park. With all the new restaurants and stores this area is really coming up and I tend to come to Hyde Park a lot now. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in any hurry so it was all good. I went with the Piña Colada Martini (delicious), friends went with blue moon beer and the other went with moscule mule. Everyone was happy with their drinks. We only had apps. Tried the Lobster Rangoon and the Lamb somosas. Both were good and we liked the sauces. I enjoyed the live band. Made me feel like we were in New Orleans!
