We were visiting from Houston and we decided to go here because it had good reviews on Google. The food was delicious I got pad Thai with shrimp so worth it. The other people I was with got the lobster and shrimp pasta which wasn't all that great it needed a bit more flavor but the shrimp and grits, and poboy were pretty good. We had the crabcakes for appetizer they only come with two but it was good the sauce was wonderful and the touch of onions was different in a good way. I've visited Chant over 15 years now. I've never received such horrible service. We sat at the bar and the bartender took our order. There were 2 other male patrons seated at the bar. Once our food arrived my friend tasted her food and stated the chicken tasted old and informed the behind the server. He grabbed the plate, tossed the food and never once asked did she want anything else. As I look at the server I notice his eye is pink and he began the rub it and never once to wash his hands afterwards. My friend asked why he never replenished our drinks and he said because it wasn't finished. She them asked why he didn't offer any additional food considering she wasn't satisfied with the dish, no answer. I then asked for the manager and he stated he was. I stated there clearly must be someone over you and he said he said we aren't able to give the managers information out. I won't return at all, but I would clearly like to know why you have a person working for your establishment that is considered a manager and doesn't know who to provide customer service. I like Chant. I've been a patron for years. I love the Saturday night live music and the variety of martinis they offer! The food is ok, it's a bit of Asian fusion like pot stickers or fried rice, a bit of homestyle like pot roast and a bit American like French fries. Yeah, the menu is all over the place. Since they have done a revamp of this place I like it. I didn't like it at first. They have made it a good go to for a quick bite and some good drinks with the friends. My go to is to sit at the bar. I have always had good service and my go to drink is the sidecar. Put your big girl panties on bc this drink packs a punch. If you have had a long week or day order this drink. I also love the fried rice. Its a big portion so you can definitely share or save some for later. Make sure you mix the sweet and spicy sauce and add it to your rice. you can also get chicken, beef or tofu options but I just get it with veggies. It is a bit pricey in my opinion. I ordered the Blackened Tilapia last week and it was surprisingly good -- full of flavour, and the rice was really interesting with a bit of crunch to it (it was cooked fine, but just made extra crunchy). The remoulade was a side, even if a small one, but at least it was a side. The Tilapia was clearly seasoned well. Went back today to get the exact same dish, and this time the remoulade was barely a schmear on top of the indifferently spiced Tilapia. And the rice was weird this time, with some kind of mystery meat crumbled in. Not going back there. It's clear this place gets its ratings based on its cocktails. Since my last review I have been to Chant several times and tried other items including the fried chicken. My sister was in town and I took her there last week. I ordered the fried chicken again and I even told her it was delicious. But not this time. The crust was very, very brown and hard. I could hardly eat it. I mean extremely hard. Went to Chant for the first time. I like the ambiance, but the seating is not to my liking. The staff was very attentive, to our needs. Nice spot with a nice atmosphere. I love the live music with the band playing all the old school cuts like prince and earth wind & fire. Yes, it can get kinda loud if you're trying to talk, but the live music does not start until later in the evening. It's not a very big spot and comes off kinda intimate with the lights being nicely dimmed and see why when my girlfriend and I were here there were a lot of couples. If you're looking for a nice date spot, this is your place. They do not take reservations on the weekend, so we were a little worried about the wait time, but when we got there at 7 pm on Saturday we were seated immediately. Our waiter was a really nice young lady who was attentive and kind. She gave us just the right amount of attention, not too much and not lacking. I ordered the shrimp and chicken gumbo with the side of corn bread and it was good. My friend ordered the salmon and she said it was good too. We also ordered the wings and they were a hit as well. The food came super fast! I mean we were not even done with our wings when the food came out. I guess if you get there at 7 pm you avoid the dinner/evening rush because people did not start coming in until like 8 pm. For drinks we both ordered a pear martini and the peach passion martini and they both were really good, but kinda lacked alcohol. The price points were not bad though. I paid $18 for the shrimp and chicken gumbo and they give you really nice size portions. Most of their martinis are $8, unless you go with the specialty ones and then you pay $12. Parking is something to deal with. I drove around for 15 minutes looking for a park but that's typical for Hyde Park, especially now with all the new restaurants and stores. I did notice a paid garage on 53rd and Harper (next to the Hyde Park Theater), so that's an option as well if you get tired of trying to come up on a street metered park. For $20 it was damn good!!! I like my steak med-rare. It was cooked correctly, but still slightly chewy. I'm only rating them two stars and not one because of the positive past experiences I have had. The waitress Juan, was very rude, unpleasant, unkind, and downright disrespectful. (Not that big of a deal) However, when I told the waitress Juan, he was unapologetic and acted as if a bug in my drink was not an issue. My food was good, however my friend's food was not. Once Juan came around, I asked if he could come to the table and he put his finger up to give me the notion that he needed a second before coming to my table. Seasoning. It's important...crucial, in fact, and this place just didn't get that. Ordered the flaming shrimp pasta dish, which looked absolutely mouth watering upon its arrival to my table, but was sorely lacking in flavor. Shrimp tasted like they were simply tossed onto the pasta in the spicy sauce and the poor innocent pasta just lay there like it was boiled in unsalted water. No love, I tell ya! When dealing with pasta and especially pasta with sauces, you simply MUST season that water or else it's just a wet bland old noodle! You also should ensure that every layer of food has been hit with flavor...season the shrimp, boil the pasta in salt, combine everything, and then check for seasoning again! I also ordered the chicken skewers appetizer and it, too, was bland. I did, however, appreciate the sauces it came with (one green wasabi or avocado and one sweet honey-ish one). With all the new restaurants and stores this area is really coming up and I tend to come to Hyde Park a lot now. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in any hurry so it was all good. I went with the Piña Colada Martini (delicious), friends went with blue moon beer and the other went with moscule mule. Everyone was happy with their drinks. We only had apps. Tried the Lobster Rangoon and the Lamb somosas. Both were good and we liked the sauces. I enjoyed the live band. Made me feel like we were in New Orleans!
