Call me old-fashioned, but one of my favorite pastimes is to visit a brick and mortar bookstore. There's nothing quite like walking in and immediately seeing rows of books. Each book takes you to a different world. Fictional characters beg you to join them on an adventure, while biographies urge you to read their story. Children's books come alive with imagination and mysteries set the stage for the detectives at heart. Sci-Fi books bring the adventure seekers together and the self-help books show others that there's always hope. How can you not love a book that helps you to escape the mundane steps of every day life and relax with a good read? That's how I feel at least! Changing Hands Bookstore is a true local gem and now they've opened a second amazing location. Over the years, I'd drive by this building several times and wonder about its history. Luckily Changing Hands came in and revived this unique building. Here lies a bookstore, coffee shop and florist. The bookshop is not just a bookshop. Wall space is filled with both books and locally made gems such as ceramics, glass, bowls, vases and more. The book selection is classic meets unique and everything in between. They have a children's section with great classics and a place for them to sit and read. They have a novelty gift selection perfect for scoring any silly gadget for a friend or loved one. A coffee shop lingers in the corner with a huge wrap around bar and plenty of table seating behind it. This is a bookstore where you can get lost for hours and wonder where the time went. Changing Hands is a special gem in this town and not just because it's a cool local business. It's because it's one of the last standing bookstores around and so it's important to support them so we don't one day wake up and find that the bookstores have been completely replaced by e-readers. Nothing beats flipping through the pages of a good book and I hope that our grandchildren can still experience that feeling someday. Love this place - both the Tempe and Phoenix locations. It's got a comfortable local feel and carries a surprisingly broad selection that makes it a good bet despite not being Amazon or Barnes & Noble. The staff is awesome and helpful. They do a great job curating books and displaying in a way that helps you discover. I realize that in the day and age of AI-assisted preference/recommendation engines and being able to choose from every book ever written, Amazon is a very reasonable choice - especially when prices are materially lower. I, for one, think it's worth the small premium for the overall experience - and if at the same time, we help preserve a bit of humanity in commerce, well then, f--k yeah. read more

Aside from the ample inventory of books, you will find such whimsical gifts. I mean, where else can you buy cat butt gum? Or antibacterial gel for OCD? Tabasco-flavored chocolates? Have some poltergeist haunting your crib? Well, this place has various sage for purchase so that one may cleanse their dwelling of bad vibes/spirits, etc. And, of course, they have incense sticks/cones and other hippy stuff like homemade soaps, essential oils, blah blah blah... They also have a full coffee bar towards the back of the store, to amp up while looking at 100 Ways to Make a Cat Like You, or What Your Poop Actually Means. Pure genius. I was looking for a funky and unique lunch spot/gift spot to bring a visiting family member and after a few minutes of searching Yelp I stumbled across this little gem. I had heard about it in passing but had never found myself with time to stop by and check it out. I am so glad I did. Monday, around noon, it was sparsely filled and we had plenty of time to poke around at all the cute little gifts, getting ideas and finding that perfect add on or stocking stuffer. Before finishing our shopping we decided to get some lunch and some coffee. My family friend had a chocolate mocha and I had the smog which was Earl Grey tea infused with lavender and a shot of espresso. It was delicious. We shared an open faced tuna sandwhich and the chips with artichoke dip. Both were so incredibly flavorful and not at all ordinary. The tuna sandwich had a bit of spice in the aioli which surprised my dining partner but she thoroughly enjoyed her meal as well. We brought the last two pieces of blueberry pie home to my husband which I helped him eat and they were perfect as he described the flavor. Exactly what he wanted. walked into what seemed like a lovely shop after having Brunch next door. I believe I would have throughly enjoyed shopping around in there if it weren't for the dreaded male cashier. While I was looking around I overheard my husband ask him for his advice on where some humorous books to place in our restroom would be. The cashier indeed walked him to the humor selection and showed him what he may be looking for....and then proceeded to walk back behind the register area and make fun of my husband for "spending that much time in the bathroom" and wanting to purchase such decor for our restroom. First of all, reading is COOL no matter what book you choose to select. SECOND, how dare you make fun of a customer when they are RIGHT there for what book they are interested in purchasing. I then walked over to my husband and pointed out they were making fun of him for simply wanting to purchase some silly bathroom decor and left immediately. If you like pretentious book stores with rude staff that will judge you for what you choose to buy and read then this is the place for you. As an avid reader, I'll continue to make my book purchases from other local places and won't be returning. Im appalled at the gusto of the cashier to make fun of their customers while they're right there. read more

Charming local bookshop with a hefty children's section. A large area is also devoted to cooking. You can find novelty gifts here as well as puzzles, toys, and candles, not to mention the bar that is connected! The staff is super friendly, but also give you your space when browsing. There are a few little places to sit down and read a chapter or two. My only criticism is I wish it was larger, especially the scifi/fantasy section. I've been going to the Tempe location for years, and was happy to hear that they were opening a location downtown before I left. I'm a huge fan of these guys, as it's the only brick and mortar book store that I will shop at. I have really high expectations for this place, and was torn about how to review it. I mean, the place is awesome. It's and outstanding place any way you cut it, but there were a few things that I noticed when I came in here for the first time yesterday. For starters, the positives. It's beautiful inside and out. I love how it looks from the street, and walking inside is really inspiring and makes me want to buy everything in there. Place is clean, well stocked, and they have a really cool wine bar area that you can sit at with chairs and tables in the back for larger parties of 4 or so. You can grab a book, a drink with a muffin and sit down and get lost in the moment. The downsides: I did not see a single cushy chair our couch. All straight back chairs, nothing more. Why is that? Also, they have a very limited selection of used books here. Mostly new with some sale items as well. They also have the usual candles and knick knacks and such, but after I cruised, I realized this. Back in the day at the Tempe location, it seemed to be about 50/50 selection on any given day. I never had a problem finding a used book for under $10 to read. Now, I feel like it's mostly new books at full retail, with a limited used selection. If I'm going to get stuck paying full retail, I may as well buy it on Amazon, which I try to avoid doing. I WANT to shop here. I WANT TO SPEND MY MONEY AT YOUR STORE. Also, you cannot trade books here, only at the tempe location. I am fine with this and have no issues, but would put it out there in case people are wondering. I'm still a huge fan of this place and love it dearly. I've just seen these subtle changes over the years, and it's at the point where I can no longer ignore it. Congrats Changing hands for opening this location. So this review might be a little bit different. Changing hands was a stop for a fun birthday treasure hunt I put on for a girl and her friends! ( I also had them grab a beer at the coffee shop/bar inside! Anyway, I can't speak to the merchandise, but the management and team is AMAZING! This is one of the cutest book stores i have been to in awhile. The ambiance is lovely, i really like the employee pick with personal reviews, and they even have a cute book bar where you can nibble, drink wine, or one of the several drafts they have on tap. This little shop is SO COOL! Reminiscent of some of my favorite little shops in Downtown Fort Collins that aren't just great bookstores, but great hang outs, that even also offer beverages. I mean, what kind of bookstore has a bar, aptly called "First Draft" INSIDE the bookstore? I was immediately in love. The book selection, the knick-knacks you certainly can't find anywhere else, literally a gift for everyone for anything, there were hidden surprises in every corner. I actually ended up here via a private Eventbrite event in their cute little back rooms, then of course had to peruse the store. There is something ironic about this store (unlike their parent store in Tempe) dealing almost exclusively in new merchandise yet retaining the name "Changing Hands" bookstore, but it's an outstanding store nevertheless. The atmosphere is perfect and they have incredible variety in the products they sell and the services they provide. There are lots of books here, however there could certainly be more. The science section is fairly small and the computer and textbook section is virtually non-existent (as if a half dozen or so dummies books on apple products among a computer book section of maybe 20 titles total should ever qualify), but I think it says more about the (unfortunate) waning interest in science/engineering and poor aptitude for mildly challenging computer science topics of our city as a whole than it does about the bookstore itself. The book bar serves coffee and alcohol and there is plenty of room to sit and read/study. The basic coffee and espresso drinks are well represented, but not any of the frou-frou syrup & whipped creme topped "coffee" drinks that fit in better at an ice cream parlor than a café. Also, there is a nice selection of Arizona beers (nimbus, lumberyard, four peaks), as well as some cochise county wines. The kids section is cozy, colorful, and even boasts an enclosed and padded play area for kids who can't yet walk or climb, and - as always with Changing Hands - there is a great selection of kids books and toys. One nice thing with them has always been the selection of knick-knacks, greeting cards, and small gifts, and this location has plenty of those as well. As other reviewers have said, we need more stores like these (or for libraries to undergo slightly similar makeovers), but at least we have one or two. Since Bookman's eliminated their sitting sections, replaced their cafes with low quality second hand instrument racks (and reeks more and more of mold and body odor every week), Changing Hands is now the only combo bookstore worth going to. They've done an outstanding job, and hopefully the community sees it too and supports them and other local businesses following the same model. read more

I came here today for the first time to see if they had any fun trinkets/stocking stuffer gifts and I was so pleased with their selection!! They not only have books and a cool cafe and restaurant area but ALSO so many cool things! They offer stuff made by locals, AZ specific items, just so many things! They have bookmarks, games, figurines, items that liberals with love and just so many unique gifts!! AND they sell funny cards that you wouldn't typically find at your local target/hallmark/paper source store. I was on a time crunch so I didn't stay as long as I wanted to but I will for sure be back! The customer service was great and the staff was so nice and wanted to genuinely help. I feel like a lot of bookstores today are failing to keep the public's interest but I am so optimistic about Changing Hands!!! :) read more

One of my favorite bookstores ever. It's a book bar so you can have a pint or a glass as you walk around. They have local crafts and other wares as well as books. The selection is vast but not overwhelming with some disarray in the order of books but that makes it fun to look through each shelf. I easily found some 10 books that I liked within a short amount of time. If I wasn't with a non-nerdy friend, I easily could've stayed and shopped in happy bliss for a long time...then sit down and read at the quiet and studious bar! read more

I'm a bibliophile, book aficionado, and bookstore addict, and Changing Hands - both Tempe and Phoenix - are two of my favorite spots. Changing Hands is a Phoenix staple not just for the book community but for community in general. They attract star writers and A-listers like Michelle Kwan, Nick Offerman, and Diana Nyad. It was only $16 for two tickets and a book, to meet the first person to swim from the US to Cuba! Amazing! Sure, they're a little smaller than a bookstore in Seattle or New York, but that's because half their retail space is taken up by a book-bar (First Draft) and event space with a fireplace. Have I sipped a beer, next to the fireplace, reading "The Alchemist"? Heck yes. I don't think I can do that anywhere else in the country! But most importantly, as for any bookstore, are the books. CH provides picks that are great for your mind and your soul. I've been able to find new books that catch my interest, both in relevancy and things that weren't even on my radar. For instance, I purchased a first edition signed copy of Ann Patchett's new release, "Commonwealth", and another time I picked up some used quality books that included "Brain on Fire" and "Siddhartha" for less than half of retail value. If you haven't been here, I encourage you to go, and if you're anything like me, get the Rewards Card because those stamps will fill up very fast. Tip: Pick up a rewards card, subscribe to their events page, and pick up a refillable growler at the bar. read more

Changing Hands is obsession making for a book lover. Not only do they carry a well curated and vast stock of interesting reads, but they TRADE for your already read books. They are generous in their acceptances for trade if the books are relatively current. It is fairly easy to pick up used copies of relatively new releases for 1/2 the price of their brand new shelf partners. There are always new "used" books added to the stacks so I find myself returning more than I should just to see what I can snag. While there, pick up clever cards, gifts, and book paraphernalia that is one of a kind. My only request is for Changing Hands to print up more Changing Hands swag for purchase, like shirts (not for First Draft) and bumper stickers. read more

This is my fiancé and my favorite place for date night. During non-covid times, we'd grab a beer and wander the shelves. Inevitably I would walk out with at least 6 new books. When it came time for engagement photos, I knew I wanted some pictures at Changing Hands. They were so accommodating and allowed us in before they opened - the photos turned out awesome and we're so grateful!! First draft has a great selection of beers, wines, pastries. Besides a HUGE variety of books, they also have a lot of great small gift ideas (small kitchen items, puzzles, children's toys, unique office supplies, candles). Foremost, to clear up any confusion, Changing Hands is both a bar and a bookstore. However, this review will primarily comment on the bookstore aspect of Changing Hands. Personally, I am quite critical of my bookstores. With that being said, Changing Hands is good, but not great. While they stock books of many topics, there is a paltry amount of books under each topic. Moreover, most of the books on the sciences are modern, left-wing liberal works. It seems that the management neglects literary classics that have withstood the ages. Yet, don't let that detract from the good that can be found at Changing Hands. They do have a book for most topics, and they offer good deals on their sale prices. Furthermore, the staff is pleasant, polite and quick to offer help. Through and through, Changing Hands is a good bookstore, but not great. I think if they were to expand their library by 25-35% this review would be a 4-Star review. If you're looking to spend an afternoon drinking brews and enjoying a book, I thoroughly recommend Changing Hands. read more

To say I am excited to finally have Changing Hands closer to me is an understatement. The west valley is in major need of so many Indie businesses and thank goodness we have an Indie bookstore in the 'hood. I was beyond nervous when I first donated money for the opening of this location and there mere days before it ended and several thousand were still needed. But the community came through and from there I eyeballed the countdown like nobody's business! My friend and I went to their opening night and we were not let down at all. The parking lot was plenty big enough to fit everyone and the open space the bookstore is in has that warehouse feel to it complete with the 2 original fireplaces from Beefeaters. The First Draft Book Bar is a very welcome addition to this location and I'm pretty sure I will be the owner of one of the bar glasses and T-shirts! There is a large open space right behind the bar that looks to possibly be the spot for all the author visits and signings. They won't have to move any bookshelves! I can't wait!...especially since I was nervous they wouldn't host any events at our Phoenix location when I first heard it was going in. Thankfully, they will start hosting events here in August (they held off not knowing if they would be open by then). In fact, last night I preordered my book to see Damien Echols! They have a restaurant attached and will soon have a garden store as well. I'm now the proud owner of 3 books from the opening night and several photos to remember the nice evening at Changing Hands. They have all the bookshelves I loved at their Tempe location...like top listed books. But I especially love their Upcoming Events shelf because my favorite part of Changing Hands is their local events. And just like at their Tempe location...they sell all the fun quirky gifts and stationary items. The Phoenix location is nothing short of perfect. My only gripe was that it was too hot last night and they need to pump up the AC a little bit more...especially with all the windows in the two front walls. Other than that...I will be visiting my local Indie bookstore a lot more now that it is within normal driving distance! This could be super dangerous. read more

This was a very exciting place to open in Phoenix. Although I love Bookmans, this is a bit different. We are all familiar with Changing hands in Tempe( if you live here) Changing hands was on Mill for years. Now it is a larger store up on McClintock Road. It is on the land mark spot that used to be a great local restaurant called Beefeaters. There is a long and cool history with that. Another time. Anyway, Changing Hands is beautiful inside. Lots of cool books,Children's, adults, and everything in between. It is clean and laid out nicely. Mixed in between all the books are little trinkets that are unique and fun, something for everyone. There are all the cool little spots to sit and read,as well as look at all you want to take home. They have great events here as well. Book signing and Children's events. We attended one this Christmas time where they had the Happy Grinch. It was wonderful. They have a very cool and different type of coffee bar and alcohol inside. Which is not something you see everywhere. It is really very enjoyable. This is all located in side a large type Building that is called The Newton. The Newton contains, Changing Hands Bookstore, a Gardening Shop, and a great little Southern type restaurant called, The Southern Rail. This place was surprisingly great because we were just looking for a used bookstore. They had a wide range of books--new and used. They had great small gifts like pens, journals, calendars and candles. The coffee/bar was busy with a great diverse crowd. The barista/bartender was very friendly and the cold brew at this place is some of the best cold brew I have experienced. It was strong and flavorful, not bitter or over flowery or fruity like some. Today I met with group in Nelson to work. Afterward I went into CHB to grab a notebook and look around for other things my daughter and I might like to read. After a minute in the store, a woman ran up and told me I had to leave my bag up front. Her tone was as if I were going to immediately shove all sorts of things into my closed up computer bag on my back. I politely told her I was just going to grab a notebook & come up front. At that point I had no desire to look around any longer. I called my daughter who was in another section hoping to get a book and told her to come to the register. We got there and I remembered that CHB had a teacher discount which I loved. I've been using my discount for years in the Tempe store. I asked the woman to use my discount & told her I didn't have my card since I just got a new wallet. She told me that I couldn't. I then showed her my pay stub from last Friday on my cell phone & she said that she couldn't accept it. I said "you cannot accept my pay stub? it proves i work for a school that pays me, an it is from three days ago." She said that she couldn't. Mind you this was a different person, and she was acting like I was lying to her face. Look, I teach in AZ, which means I barely make anything give our education system, CHB offers a great teacher discount, but this lady treated me like I was lying to her. Finally after more discussion she said she'd give it to me this time but I better have my ID with me next time. She acted like she was doing me a big favor. I got my 10% discount on a notebook (I wouldn't've bothered if I knew I was going to put her out so much), and we left. While leaving the store, I scanned everywhere on the doors and glass near the front door for any signs about needing to leave bags at the counter. I love CHB Tempe and have been going there for years. I've worked on social media for them, I've given the PR materials for CHB for free, and I was eager to try this store. Over all, I like CHB but these two young women definitely made my first experience less than idea. Feeling like a thief & liar is not how I wanted to begin my day. read more

I hate to be a naysayer but I was not impressed. Maybe I walked in with the wrong mindset, maybe I went on a slow day, but like I said, I wasn't impressed. I was expecting a used bookstore, full of used books, but instead, all the books were pretty damn new, with some claiming to be used. From the reviews, I was expecting a quirky, fun place to hang out, but it was empty, dreary, and slow, with expensive, I daresay overpriced, little knick knacks. I guess if I had walked in with a fat wallet, and expected a regular, run-of-the-mill bookstore trying to appeal to those who fancy themselves to be slightly obscure, it would have been great, but I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea. read more

My favorite bookstore in all of Phoenix!! Great selection but not a huge, mega bookstore like a certain, unnamed chain. All topics and categories are covered but if you can't find what you are looking for, chances are they can order it for you. In addition to books, they also have excellent gifts. Everything from gifts for kids, food lovers, beer drinkers, crafters, jokers, jewelry lovers...there is always something new. Other things worth pointing out: *Sale racks outside - check them out *Kids section is awesome *Used books are worked in with the new books *Staff picks section is great *Author signings and additional signed books on the shelves. I notice this more in the kids area *Cookbooks galore And the best part....you can grab a beer or glass of wine (or coffee) while you browse. If you don't feel like browsing, you can grab a drink and sit at the bar or a table in the large seating area behind the bar. This one star is for the blond, thin woman that was running a Friday special events night a short while back. I don't know if she is the manager or someone who runs special events or what, but I was working at the counter of the cafe for a while one Friday and I was on the phone dealing with a difficult transaction that took a long time and I was listening a lot to what the other person was saying to me over the phone for what must have been more than an hour. The place was kind of noisy that night and I did not notice people moving from that back salon room to the other side of the store for the event. I had no idea an event was going to happen. No one at the register or bar had told me when I first came in ordering a drink and I had not noticed any sign when I was ordering. If I had known, I would have for sure moved to accommodate their event. I did not, I had been staring at my laptop as the woman over the phone was still talking to me and then suddenly the blond woman from the cafe walks up to me and very rudely and impatiently addresses me to tell me there is an event and I need to go. Completely rude to me with no compassion or understanding that I had no idea things had changed behind me. I couldn't get off the phone but I got up immediately and gathered my things to leave as I asked the person on the phone to repeat themselves since your blond staff loudly scolded me while I was still on the phone. They had closed both sides of the doors around the bar and while I was holding my laptop phone and bag, had to struggle to open one door more to let me through to the other side of the bar. I don't mind being told I have to move if I have not noticed that things have changed behind or around me, but do not treat me with such a disrespectful tone, manner, and attitude from the get go. Maybe that blond lady can have some compassion and better customer service so she gently tells someone to move. I also wouldn't have minded her loud address, even though it was not necessary, if she had at least used a kind tone. She was rude. I come here from time to time and I like the other staff a lot and appreciate their drinks and products. Please ask that blond woman to show more respect to me and other customers if we don't understand something that is going on. We deserve good customer service and kindness. Heinz was right. Good things come to those who wait. 20 years after I first met Changing Hands in the old Mill Ave location, the newest addition to the CH family is worth the wait (and trek into Central Phoenix for the legions of suburbanites). I went opening night and am confident they will continue to get even better in the next coming weeks. As fresh as the opening was, everything, by what I could tell, still jumped heads over most, established businesses. The care and thoughtfulness put into the development of this shop is apparent, throughout. I can't wait to go back again, and again, once the immediate crowds of curiosity subside (just a bit; I don't want business to stop), and savor some of the fun wines and beers while browsing books. I tried a new IPA while there and was really tickled to see the creativity of the menu. In other words, I no longer have to trek far from home for my fill of literary love... and there's beer.
