It's a beautiful restaurant, with wait staff in traditional Thai attire, and a portrait of the Thai king in a place of honor. They offer an extensive menu (six pages?) with soups, salads, satay, and entrees which often include prawns. The entrees are offered at a 1-5 scale, with one as, "mild", and five as, "a passport to Thailand"! I ordered a red curry with chicken at a "two" and it was just right! The wonton soup was excellent, and the dessert of fried bananas was a perfect ending to the meal. Lots of vegetarian options, and I was asked if I had any allergies as I ordered. Based on the ratings, I had higher expectations, but alas it was just alright. No ketchup in the pad thai or anything, but I've definitely had better...much better. The Good - lunch specials makes things a few bucks cheaper than anywhere in the GTA - nice, pleasant service - spicy levels are real, not "watered" down The Not-So-Great - pad thai noodles stuck together - server either forgot or our order wasn't put into the system, so food was delayed. He was really apologetic tho and we were starving! Service was kinda slow. It's not a place where you can go if you're on a 30min lunch break! - spicy basil beef too salty, couldn't finish it in one sitting - spring rolls weren't drained long enough, so oily from fryer - a person at a neighbouring table also ordered the pad thai and it was at least 2-3Xs bigger the portion than what we were served Out of the 3 dishes: pad thai, green curry, & spicy basil beef, the stand out was the green curry and not the pad thai which was a surprise. I was visiting St Catherine's .. first time here actually and wanted some Asian food.. saw decent reviews here but still had very low expectations. The place has a nice atmosphere with some antique furnishings and paintings. Service was quick and polite. We tried the set menus. The dishes were all very good except the papaya salad seemed a bit plain. The usual staples of Pad Thai (had their signature one) and tom yum soup were excellent! Still exploring our new extended neighbourhood, and happened upon Chang Noi's. So far, the best Thai restaurant in the area that we've tried. They've got a pretty good set menu offering, which one of us took advantage consisting of an appetizer, soup, main, drink and dessert, with a premium seafood version also on offer. Service was fast and friendly, restaurant was lovely inside, and the food was great. Of particular note were the expertly and amply-stuffed garden salad rolls, and the Kuay-Tiew Rad Kra Pao, the latter of which I ordered with pork. I miss the Prad Kra Prao I used to get in Toronto from Pai, and this hit the spot (though, I was expecting ground pork, I got thinly sliced pork). This will go on our list of restaurants to return to and bring friends to when they come to visit. read more

I went to this place last night with my family after our trip to the Butterfly Museum in Niagara on the Lake. This took us only 10 mins to reach to after a quick yelp search. The food quality and service was excellent. We ordered the hot and sour soup as an appetizer and loved it. The drunken noodles had a generous amount of chicken and veggies. Our favourite and most recommended is the Green Curry Chicken. Every single bite was packed with flavour. The grilled chicken was nicely cooked and had a nice grill flavour to it. They served this with marinated cabbage which was to die for. The presentation of Chicken Thai was impressive as it was wrapped around an egg omelette. We also ordered the elephant chicken wings with orange zest which were addictive. If you are ever in St. Catherine's and are craving good Thai food then come here and you can Thank me later! read more

I was in NOTL for the Shaw Festival, but staying in St. Catherine's and looking for dinner on a Saturday night. The options seemed... limited shall we say. Came across this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. SO glad I did!! Came in a party of 2 in the middle of the dinner rush with no resos and the place was packed. However, they were really accommodating and made room for us on the small patio. (It smelled so good, we were gonna get take out if they couldn't seat us!). Definitely go for the signature pad thai with the thin blanket of egg on top. Delicious!! No fake orange-y/red colour and really fresh ingredients. We also got the red curry chicken which was very coconut-y and rich. For a starter, we shared the mango salad - always a classic. The food was very authentic and that extended to the spice level. Their scale goes from 1-5 and we were gonna get 4, but asked our server and she recommended medium (3) and gave us additional chili peppers on the side to adjust the spice. I can handle a good amount of spice, and the 3/5 level was really good! This is not one of those Thai places that waters down their spice level for Westerners! Service was prompt and attentive. Prices are quite reasonable for the quality of food you are getting. They have a set menu option for ~$25/pp including salad, soup, a main, and dessert. But it sounded like a bit too much food. As it was, 2 of us shared the salad and 2 mains and ended up having a lot of leftovers. This was such a pleasant surprise and I would definitely come back if I were passing through the area again (plus, it's near the highway so very easy to get to). read more

Authentic Thai cuisine at its finest, probably one of the best in the southern Ontario region! I would honestly say that the restaurant is one of the cleanest and tidy that I have ever seen, while the environment itself is also very comfy, as the restaurant is situated in a very remote location. We tried to be methodical with our choice of food so it wouldn't coincide too much with our familiarity with Chinese food, but we still ended up choosing the deep fried calamari and spring rolls for appetizers. For the main, we went with everyone's recommendation of the authentic Pad Thai and cashew nut chicken. They were flavourful and the presentation was lovely. Went here for lunch to release the bad taste that was left from the Last Thai place I went to (Mai Thai- Niagara Falls..check out my review). $10 for lunch you a get Pad Thai, Soup or Mango salad and a Spring roll. I could have eaten buckets of the hot and sour soup! The spring roll come win very balanced dipping sauce that has a hint of vinegar base that sets these spring rolls miles beyond others. The Pad Thai is very good and has a great flavor. Side note ...the heat added to the Pad Thai ..medium would be a 2 in a 1-5 scale. If you want to sweat it out by all means order HOT! Came to St. Catharines for a concert and looked up Thai, first place closest to venue was not to be found, this was second closest. We ordered fresh salad rolls which were supposed to consist of 4 pieces. When I get fresh salad rolls at other Thai restaurants it is usually 2 large rolls cut in half making 4 pieces. This restaurant served us TINY pieces looking as if they made one small roll and cut it into 4 and served it for an expensive $8. I really wish I would have sent that back into the kitchen because that was NOT worth the price BUT we barely ate all day and couldn't wait! My partner ordered a coconut soup for their main entree and when we order from other Thai restaurants there are ALWAYS vegetables included in the soup, this was just straight up coconut milk it seemed. So I am very curious why all the reviews are through the roof at this place as my experience was pretty bad and I would actually never return. Fresh rolls were not tasty. Soup was not tasty. The red curry I ordered was tasty but was nothing special and I have had better. read more

My boyfriend and I went for the first time and were very, very impressed. He got the pad Thai (the cheapest of the 3 pad Thai options), and I got the $25 special which came with an appetizer, soup, entrée, and dessert. The spring rolls were amazing and came with a delicious sweet chili sauce. Coconut soup with chicken was good, but too sweet for me. For my entrée I got the grilled beef and OMG was it ever delicious. I didn't eat it all so I would have room for dessert but ended up opening the box as soon as I got home to finish it because I just couldn't wait. Dessert was mango ice cream with sticky rice, yuuuum. My roommate who was in Thailand on a four month exchange said everything we ate looked just like what she ate there. The quote "Don't judge a book by its cover" truly applies at this restaurant. A true diamond in the rough. From the outside it may look a little worn down but from the moment you walk in you are greeted with friendly faces awaiting to seat you. The decor is very eclectic but I think it gives this gem character. The menu is filled with a variety of appetizers, soups, noodles, curries, entrées, and desserts. I currently work in NOTL and unfortunately the only Thai restaurant in sight has a small menu & high prices. I am proud to say I have been here THREE times and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. My last visit I ordered: - Singha Beer - Deep Fried Spring Rolls - Tom Kha Gai (Chicken Coconut Soup) - Yellow Chicken Curry (Medium Spicy) with Jasmine Rice. All which tasted INCREDIBLE! Beware of the spice level of your food. Medium is pretty spicy so I suggest getting less than you think - you can always add more but you can take away the spice! The ONLY CON I have about this place is that the service isn't fast enough. Either the kitchen is under staffed or the servers aren't fast enough. The 2nd time I visited I waited 45 minutes for the food, mind you, every time we've gone the restaurant is usually full - way too slow but we always come back because THE FOOD IS WORTH the drive out there. When you leave they are happy that you came and there are milk chocolates and pens to take home with you! CHECK THEM OUT! You won't be disappointed with the food! Not really a fan. The first time I ate here, I ordered the same dishes that I would get from other Thai restaurants. I felt the take out portions were a little small for the price that I was paying. I tried the food again a couple months later ordering the same thing, and then sampling some of the various foods my friends ordered, but nothing seemed like it was worth the effort. Waiting in the restaurant for my orders I can tell you that the place looks amazing. The decor suits the ethnic theme. Very disappointed in service, food, and presentation; after this being our favourite restaurant for years. Waitress forgot to bring us our drinks, and even when we asked for them, she came back with water vs wine. She then took away the mango salad before we were finished . My companion received his 2 dishes, but i had to track her down to remind her that my entree was still MIA! My "Magic Shrimp" has always been a large bowl of "orgasmic shrimp " with peppers and wonderful sauce; and always enough to take home for bedtime snack. But this time a small 3"x3" serving of 'sauced' shrimp and 3 cucumber slices. No room on small plate to add the rice, but there was no sauce to mix with it anyway. My request for sauce was promptly delivered - all 3 tablespoons of it! The shrimp was good - for foreplay; but a far reach from it's historical orgasmic status! WHAT A LETDOWN!!!!! read more

Have been eating at Thai restaurants for many years, mostly in Toronto. I also spent 30+ days in Thailand so I know what real Thai food should be like. In fact, most Thai restaurants aren't really like food in Thailand, but Americanized (personally, I think in a good way). Chang Noi is not as Americanized, and I feel they serve dishes that are better than Thailand or an Americanized Thai restaurant. The flavour combinations are fantastic! The decor is great. You have to check out the elephant paintings (and book) while you're there... definitely interesting. I've eaten here more than 5 times and have always greatly enjoyed the experience. Also very affordable for what you get. Overall a better value than the more popular Mai Thai. The only bad thing I can say is that it's not in a good location and parking can be tight if it's busy. read more

This is my favourite Thai restaurant in St. Catharines. Call ahead for seating on weekends for dinner, otherwise usually just walk in. They are a cut about average for sure, with a nice atmosphere and decor as well as fresh foods well prepared and nicely presented. Very clean. Had the 3 course meal for $25, total steal...fresh mango salad to start (huge portion) just the right mix of sweet, tangy, fresh, real coconut soup to follow, not watered down coconut broth, the Thai marinated grilled beef was perfect. Not overly sauced very fresh and the pickled slaw on the side was the perfect fresh accompaniment. To finish sticky coconut rice pudding and REAL coconut ice-cream. Chang Noi is true authentic fresh and delicious Thai food. The apple salad will change everything you ever knew about apples and how amazing they could be, the fresh spring rolls are to die for, the pad thai will make you never eat the crappy excuse for "pad thai" anywhere else again, and the fried spring rolls are nothing like the freezer burnt deep fried mummy parts served at other North Americanized Asian restaurants. I believe the noodles shouldn't be over done and maybe it's just me but I think a pad Thai should have more then 2 pieces of chicken and 2 shrimp. As a frequent traveler between Niagara region and Toronto - Chang Noi is well situated along QEW making it a breeze to stop for lunch / dinner on our way for a thai food. I made stops previously at Chang Noi and would gladly provide a four stars to five stars rating due to its excellent and genuine Thai cooking and excellent service - however my recent experience today has left somewhat a different impression. We stopped tonight for regular dinner - service was brisk and food was excellent usual - however, we encountered something unusual on our food (hair) and the service manager was alerted immediately. The service manager showed a disbelief and had to ask us twice where we found the hair (and we responded as we're plating them) - and also had to pull the hair right in front of us. I found this a little odd, not respectful and disappointing for any restaurant to do this infront of their customer. The good news is that our food was promptly replaced. In all - it's a good thai restaurant (probably one of the better ones in the area) however I'll probably won't be visiting the restaurant after my recent experience. read more

I used to love Chang Noi - until tonight when they gave me food poisoning by serving me uncooked shrimp. When I pointed this out to the waiter, the manager offered to 'microwave' it for me. Needless to say I was shocked and disgusted by their lack of concern. I should point out that I WAS a regular customer up until tonight. I don't know if they changed ownership, or management or chefs but the food was sub-par this evening. I should also point out that I was not offered another entre. The three people I was with said their food was not up to its usual standard. Unless you are looking to get sick DO NOT EAT HERE.
