Tried Chalos for the first time last week with the bf. He was actually the one who introduced me to this place. Ive been wanting to try their empanads and I'm glad I did because they were super yummmy! FYI, they are only taking online orders. Place your order on their website and they will text you once your order is ready. We ordered 6 empanadas - 1 spinach&cheese, 2 mushroom, 1 corn, 1 onion& cheese and 1 ham & cheese. You can order them baked or fried. We went with fried because someone suggested fried was better! I loved the spinach & cheese and mushroom one. You could tell the spinach was fresh. I wish it was a little more cheesy though. But still good overall. The mushroom one was packed with thinly sliced mushroom and ooey cheese, loved every bite! The corn one was my least favorite, it had a nice flavor but I think the corn mixture would have been better if it was creamy/thicker? My boyfriend loved the ham&cheese one the most. The fried empanadas had the most perfect crunch. The crust was light and not too dry or flaky. Looking forward to trying more flavors! read more

Happy to support a local, small business during COVID! Ordered ahead online and empanadas were ready promptly for pickup (I believe coffees were made to order, so we waited a little bit). Interior looked adorable and service was very friendly. Ordered seven empanadas, but top three choices were: 1) spicy beef, 2) chalos, 3) chicken. Churros were not greasy at all and very chewy interior. Dulce de leche sauce was the perfect complement. If I had to critique, I think empanadas could be labeled better, veggie empanadas didn't have too much flavor, and a sauce to pair with the empanadas might be a plus. This place has been on my list to try for some time now and finally had a reason to try it! I placed an order on Doordash for 4 empanadas and when they got here I just reheated them in the toaster oven as they got here earlier than I expected. Let me say, I'm so happy that I got to try this place. It's absolutely delicious. Maybe it's because I haven't had empanadas in a long time, but these are soooo good. I think if you're fairly hungry, 3 empanadas is good per person. If you're looking for a light meal, 2 empanadas. However, they're so good you're going to be wanting more. For the price, the empanadas are a little small. But they're pretty tasty so you can't be too mad. I had the spicy beef and the mushroom ones and liked both quite a bit. The mushroom one could use some sort of sour or spicy sauce on the side to brighten it up. read more

Delicious churros! They were perfectly fried, but not too heavy on the dough (which I like). Had a light coat of the cinnamon sugar, which was perfect for us. I ordered it with the dulce de leech sauce, this is a MUST try. It is creamy with a rich delicious caramel-like flavor. It's hard to describe, you just HAVE to try it with the churros. It's so good. If I wasn't already stuffed from lunch, I would have for sure ordered the empanadas. So many different flavors and they looked DELICIOUS. I will say, this place is a bit on the pricier side, but it's high quality food that is worth it. Can't wait to come back here again! read more

Finally had the chance to try Chalos today! So glad they're open during SIP but they're only open Fri-Sun, 9am-3pm. You are not allowed to go inside the store. They have a table set up to block the entrance but their door is open. I ordered online - not too sure if you can order on the spot. Ordered all baked empanadas since we're trying to be healthier but I read a lot of reviews saying fried are better so maybe I'll give the fried ones a try next time to see if that's true. I still think the baked is good and still crispy on the edges though! It wasn't very oily either! :) Tried the following and they are $4.25 each (pretty pricey for the size, but I understand they need to pay their rent!): - Sweet beef #2 (least favorite. it was too sweet for me and bf who normally loves sweets) - Spicy beef #3 - this was good! way better than sweet beef in our opinion - Chicken #4 - it was ok, but a little dry - Spicy chicken #5 - same as the chicken but a little spice - Corn #6 - this was ok. lots of corn so that's good for corn lovers! - Spinach with cheese #11 - lots of spinach. this was ok too - Mushroom #13 - this was my faveee. the combination of the mushroom and mozzarella cheese was heavenly and i'm normally a meat lover type of gal :p We didn't heat it up after picking it up so it was a little warm but not hot. Not sure if it makes a huge difference in taste after reheating, but overall we enjoyed it! I'll definitely be back to try the fried and their house chalos (#15) since they labeled it their house favorite. Also I'll be sticking to the spicy beef and mushroom empanadas for sure. My friend and I have been wanting to try this place for a while. We both got empanadas and shared the churros. The food were delicious and the staff was very pleasant. However the access to the bathroom was not very accessible as there was a crate in the way and a wheelchair would be difficult to fit through to get to the bathroom. read more

Came here for breakfast burritos (sausage and bacon both top tier) but the owner Chalo let us try his empanadas (best l've ever had not even close). Perfect snack! Highly recommend the cheese and onion empanada in particular. My partner and I are vegetarian, and staying nearby in the sunset district. We were looking for a good snack in the middle of the afternoon, and boy did Chalos deliver! Great safety protocols with all employees wearing masks and a lot of airflow in the restaurant ( although it was freezing hahaha). Highly recommend getting the empanadas fried if you can - just so delicious when they are fresh! We tried almost every veg option on the empanada menu, and the only one that was a bit odd was the spinach and cream one ( this was probably because we tried it after all the delicious cheese options!). Updating during SIP: These guys have been my weekend go to during shelter in place. They're open Thursday-Sunday from 9am-3pm and take orders over phone or online. The owners are so sweet and accommodating! Big plus for having craft beer cans to-go when I don't want to drive to a brewery or store. Keep it up, Chalos! What a cute addition to our neighborhood! After taking our son on an early morning trip to the SF Zoo, we started looking around for some nearby lunch options before we headed back home. My husband and I still talk about these incredible empanadas we had back in Buenos Aires on our honeymoon years ago, so when we came across Chalos in our Yelp search, we definitely had to give them a try! We were able to place an online order while we were in the park before we headed out. You get to choose between all fried or all baked, half and half, or all half-baked (so you can take them home and finish heating up for another time). A little bummed there wasn't an option to do half of them cooked and half of them half-cooked, considering I wasn't really planning to eat all of them in one sitting and would have loved to save some for later. 6 minute drive later, we pulled up into the 2-3 spots reserved for curbside pick-up during COVID-times. Note however, that this is a little bit of a misnomer. You still need to exit your vehicle to walk up to the storefront to get your food. They appear to have a single table outside on the sidewalk in case you'd like to dine there, but otherwise it's all take-out. We ordered a baker's dozen of assorted empanadas, all fried. Be wary, the bottom of the to-go box can get a little greasy if you choose the fried option. The top of the box has a little reference sheet of shorthand to help you identify which empanada is which, and the empanadas themselves had a little black stamp on each with the corresponding shorthand. They probably stamp before they cook them though, because the fried ones were semi-unintelligible through all the fried bubbly dough. I'm pregnant and pretty much always hungry, so to give you an idea of portion sizes and meals: 2 empanadas were a nutritionist's recommended full, and 3 were a preggo Jenny's full. The fried dough had a similar consistency to a McDonald's apple pie, which was quite delightful! However, I do wish more for nostalgia's sake, that we had ordered them baked instead to be more authentic and similar to what we had in Argentina. The empanadas with meat willings were relatively full, but anything with cheese ended up being less than half filled, probably because once melted, the rest became air. We ordered a combination of all the meat-filled ones and all taste pretty good, but our favorites were definitely the spicy chicken, spicy beef, and the ham and cheese. Funnily enough, the spicy beef ones taste a bit like an elevated Taco Bell hard-shell taco. The sweet and regular ones had less flavor and wasn't quite as interesting. Spicy also isn't really that spicy, so don't expect a kick and needing to grab a tissue to dab your runny nose. I'd say taste-wise, they're above average. It's pretty good, especially freshly made. But I guess it's a little unfair because we were definitely comparing them to the real deal from down south. Authentic? Not really. Delicious? Quite so. However, at almost $4 a pop even after buying them in bulk, it's a bit hefty of a price point and not your best value, especially if you get too many half-filled cheesy ones. It was worth a try, we enjoyed them for sure, but with the steep pricing, probably not a repeat visit for our household. read more

I came here when they first opened, but solely for the coffee and workspace. I got their Chalos Special and it's in a way similar to Andytown's snowy plover, but instead of sparkling water, they use Coca Cola. Very delicious and tastes even better when you mix the whipped cream. The place itself is pretty roomy with lots of small and large tables. Unfortunately, I didn't see any outlets available so if you plan on working or studying off a laptop, it's not ideal to stay for a long period of time. The Sunset neighborhood is known for having more cold, foggy days than most of the rest of the city. It was brilliant to open up a place that serves fresh churros, hot empanadas, and good coffee. I noticed they have beer and wine as well. This place is bright, happy, clean, and the food is tasty and delicious. The empanadas are fresh and just the right amount of crispy. I was expecting them to be greasy, but they were perfectly done. The churros were delicious. I tried them on their own with coffee (which was also surprisingly good). What a gem, i can't believe it took us 5 years to try it.. It's not the closest spot to our home, thus we usually go somewhere closer, but i proposition of a fresh churro sounded amazing. Came by on a Saturday evening a couple minutes before closing and they were still taking orders (thankfully!). We had just found them on yelp while looking for dinner options and they made a great after dinner snack, although already quite filling by themselves. We ordered three baked empanadas (spicy beef, spinach, and chalos) and one order of churros (comes in 3) with added cinnamon. The baked exterior was just crispy enough to contrast well with the fillings. It was also thin enough to not take the show away but act as a wonderful blanket for the star fillings. Spicy beef - such flavorful pieces of beef and bell pepper. Wouldn't have know there was hardboiled egg in it. Spinach - super packed with spinach! Also couldn't tell there was hardboiled egg here. Chalos - had to get the signature named one. This was cheesy and creamy. Hard to distinguish the other ingredients but tasted good. Churros! Chalos is bomb!! Modern and cute interior with a nice, open floor plan. The place has a warm, cozy feel but it's large enough to fit many people. The girl working the counter was super friendly, nice and helpful. She really knew the menu offerings inside out. She answered all my questions with ease. Top notch service! 10 stars for her!! I went with the #1 beef empanadas fried. They offer their empanadas prepared to order either baked or fried. These empanadas were bomb!! The dough was fresh and flaky on the outside. The juicy beef filling was plentiful, well seasoned and had an authentic bite to it. Would definitely order again. The number 3, 11, and 15 all sound very promising, especially after what I tasted today. I also tried the churros. The small order came with three big sticks that were fried fresh and tossed in cinnamon and sugar. Sooo yummy!! They offer three dipping sauces for the churros but I was in a hurry and sadly didn't have time for dip. In addition to their freshly house made goods, they offer a full coffee bar, beer, wine, muffins, croissants and other pastries. Chalos is an excellent addition to the neighborhood. I really wanted to like Chalos- I heard great things about them but the only thing that I liked there was the furniture inside the shop. I ordered a drip coffee, two empanadas and an order of the sweet churros. They told me that the coffee is brewing so I will have to wait a minute for my coffee- no biggie. However, when I finally got my coffee, it was lukewarm, has no flavor and the "coffee" that was freshly brewed was still brewing on the counter...so...what did y'all serve me really? The empanadas were okay, just nothing really special about them. The inside of the sweet churros were raw (I ordered ones without filling), the sugar on the outside fell right off as you pick it up so basically they were just mostly fried dough with no flavors (seriously, where's the cinnamon?) Yum! I went yesterday evening and shared 3 empanadas and a basket of churros with dulce de leche dipping sauce. The price / empanada is a bit expensive ($3.95 / empanada) for its size... but it's San Francisco. So I am not all that surprised. The provolone empanada had this peppery quality to it that was fabulous. The tres quesos empanada was just gluttony at its best. My eating buddy got the chicken one and absolutely loved it. Then we got to the churros. I will say, they give quite a few churros in the basket. And with the dulce de leche dip the dish is really decadent, so I think they provide plenty of food. I love this for a dessert, but I think it would also be amazing over some delicious coffee. YES!! I'm so excited to have Chalos in the Sunset! They're serving up absolutely LEGIT Argentinian empanadas. We've been wanting to pop in and try it, but haven't had time. We finally made it in last week and will definitely be back often. So we walk in - the ambiance and decor is stunning. It brings a whole new element to this neighborhood. So clean and well presented. I got the lunch special (2 empanadas, salad, and drink). I had to try the Carne empanada first, so I ordered that and the Jamon & Queso. The Jamon & Queso was fantastic, but let me tell you about this Carne empanada. My wife and I have been eating up and down Taraval for nearly 10 years now - there are several amazing bites of food - but my first bite into this carne empanada was without question the most developed, flavorful, and utterly satisfying single bite of them all. My wife ordered the Champignones and a churro. Absolutely incredible. Of course, we traded bites so we could both taste everything. We would order it all again...after we taste the rest of the menu. Even the salad was perfect. Fresh greens and a deeply flavorful vinaigrette. In addition, they serve a nice variety of sandwiches and pastries, and their coffee/espresso drinks are on point. I like coming here for their breakfast burritos. It's good. But this time the burrito had egg all over the outside of the burrito. Which I can let slide. But the problem was it was also burnt. If you make 2 mistakes you should've just remade the burrito. I mean what is that like couple of bucks. I've been here a total of three times now. On the soft opening: they only served fried empanadas. The second time, my boyfriend and I picked up empanadas before attending one of his races. They didn't ask if we wanted fried or baked empanadas.. And I assumed they would be the exact same since their soft opening. I was a little confused to why they were smaller and still tasty, but it was different in texture visually and with the realms of taste. The third time, I went on a coffee date with my cousins Syd and Tiff before going to my niece's birthday party and they asked Tiff if she wanted the empanadas fried or baked. - I LOVE THE FRIED OVER THE BAKED, empanadas. They're bigger, more flavorful, and the texture is on point. - I finally got one of their drinks of their menu though: the Chai Latte.
