Had a wonderful dinner here last evening: Lamb ravioli with grilled green tomatoes and zucchini; palate rejuvenation from a carmenere cab sauvignon. It was very flavourful, and just the right size to go with the rest of the meal. I don't generally have dessert but I did have their evening special: a unique cinnamon bun bread pudding topped with apple "syrup". It did not disappoint. As always the potato "chips" were a delight with the tasty spread. I've now been here 4 times, but this is the first time I've tried the homemade oils provided on each table. Both were very tasty, but our server (Lindsay) accurately rated one as a 6/10 and the other 8/10 for "heat". But I like spice so all was good. Can't wait to try them on their pizza some time. My wife had had the house soup which she let me try - a tasty broth combination of kale, potato and sausage. It's now on my must try list. read more

My son took me out for Mother's Day brunch today at your establishment. All I can say is Wow! You charged $47 per person for a meal that I would maybe say was worth $20 per person...if that. I've had better meals at Salisbury house...we should have went to the Keg for that kind of cost & quality, won't be going back any time soon if ever. Unfortunately our first visit will likely be our last. There were only two servers acting as host/hostess, server, bus boy and probably bar tender for a full restaurant of almost 50 people. We probably sat for almost an hour with empty water glasses and had to wait 15-20 min after asking for refills. It was not the servers fault by any means - they were clearly drastically under staffed and running around as fast as they could. The place needed at least 2 more staff to provide decent service and I wonder where was the owner/management while their staff and customers suffer? Food was decent and atmosphere was beautiful on the patio, but service really needed help. read more

Tonight was our first visit and it certainly won't be our last. Chaise specializes in excellent food served up family style. The price fix menu was varied, the serving sizes generous and seconds of each course were available at no additional charge. I do suggest taking advantage of the optional coffee bar and dessert option for a delectable ending to your meal, with seconds, again, offered at no additional charge. Add in fabulous service ( thanks Marvin!) that was both patient and attentive and you have the makings of a wonderful evening. read more

This place opened in April 2013 and considering that they are a new eatery with a fairly young chef, I would say this place has great potential. The decor has been updated from the previous Italian restaurant but the exterior hasn't changed much except for the small signage advertising Chaise - I'd recommend a bigger signage to attract more people as they might not notice this restaurant amongst all the residential homes on Provencher. The interior space is warm and cozy with a lounge on one side of the home. The second floor has a more intimate lounge area though the leather couches seem to large for the room that it's in but would make for a nice small party are with friends. There's even a media/private room upstairs that has a TV in place. They have a baker in house who makes really nice breads. The complimentary warm fresh bread is absolutely delicious! Also, the calzone breading was so good - it wasn't overly doughy and made for a great starter to share or a good lunch item if you add on a soup or salad. The roast chicken calzone ($8) was filled with chunks of chicken, roasted red pepper and garlic sauce. It was a subtle dish even with the garlic sauce, I'd definitely try their calzones again. The entrees are $10-$18 with offerings of pizza, pasta and other mains. The mains come with 2 sides that you can choose such as brown butter whipped potato, cheesy cauliflower with corn crumb topping, potato chips with smoked onion dip or fresh seasonal veggies. It truly is a great deal to get an entree for these prices. I opted for the AAA MB hangar steak with the chips and the cauliflower as sides for $18. The hangar steak was tender and perfectly seasoned and cooked - this one is a winner. The chips were freshly made and were delicious while the cauliflower side was just ok. The slow roasted 1/4 chicken ($18) came as a leg/thigh dish and surprisingly it was quite dry. I wouldn't order this one again as you couldn't really taste the citrus thyme and cloves. But the whipped potatoes and seasonal veggies were good. Wines by the glass were maybe around $7 or so....which is very good pricing compared to many places that now charge around $10. The chef came out and asked how the food was and our server was very enthusiastic about the restaurant. There were some minor misses but nothing glaring for a new eatery. Overall the taste and price is on the mark and with time, this may become a very popular St. B neighbourhood bistro! read more

This food concept is actually genius. There is no menu, and there really are no choices. The restaurant makes only one meal for every person that enters on that day and you don't get to know what that is until you sit down in the restaurant and talk to the waiter. This is genius because the restaurant does not have to purchase mushrooms when mushrooms are very expensive. It only has to purchase the items it wants to purchase and creates a meal around them. You don't need to have 25 or 50 different food items in the restaurant because you are only cooking one meal. For the restaurant this is an ideal situation. You keep food costs low by having a minimal amount of food in the restaurant, and you only purchase what is the freshest and the cheapest available in that week. For the patron however paying $20 or $25 for dinner it is not such a great deal. I went for a visit recently and had the only option available which was the brunch option. If you want the lunch option you have to phone ahead to reserve. The brunch option consisted of a Savory course and a sweet course. We got these two platters delivered to the table. It was more than enough to feed the two of us. There were one or two great items on the platter. The cumen drenched fried potatoes were surprising and delicious. The scrambled eggs were great with cheese folded in. The other 3 items (seasoned brown beans, cuscus, and seasond ground beef) were mediocre at best. The sweet platter was acceptable but really nothing special and consisted of waffles with compote and whipped cream. The thing is if a restaurant only needs to cook one meal all day long, you would think that that meal would be exemplary. It was not. I could have gotten the same thing for half the price at any of a dozen other restaurants in the area. Although I love the concept for the profits that it brings the owner of the restaurant I cannot recommend this restaurant to people who want good value for their money. read more

I have been to this restaurant a few times on a Sunday and the food is always delicious but... the one downside about this place is that it's only good to go with maybe 2 or 3 people because they give you one plate of everything which Is plenty if you're only sharing with 2 other people but if you're in a group of say 6 people they still only give you 1 plate of everything... so everyone has a little portion the size a mouse can eat and you're not even satisfied. Then dessert comes out because you can't order seconds until you've eaten the dessert but by the time you've eaten the dessert you don't want to go back to eating sausage and eggs again... like it just doesn't make sense. Also some of the servers there need to smile more and act like they like their job... they look miserable. read more

We have been to Chaise many times and have always had a wonderful experience. This visit was completely different. We were seated at our table that already had glasses of water waiting for us. We waited for over 20 minutes with not even as much as a glance from any server. We just assumed that the staff were not prepared for guests, so we patiently waited. A couple walked in, unlike us, without reservations, and they were seated at a table next to us. They looked over the drink menu with anticipation, as we did and then a server went to their table to take their orders. This was now the 25+ minute mark of our wait without a word or glance from any staff member, after they seated us. So, we decided to leave, as it was clear that we had either been forgotten or for some unknown reason, ignored. On our way out, I kindly let the hostess know that no one had spoken to us. There are so many ways this could have been handled, and at the least a simple apology would have sufficed, however, they continued the same treatment. Not a word! As I said, we have been to Chaise many times, but this was absolutely the very last time we will go there. I would not suggest this as restaurant to anyone. They clearly don't take their business seriously. What an utter disappointment. read more

Did the fixed-price dinner with two other people. Great value and a decent dining experience. The menu is unlimited which is great, however the portions are decent sized and more than enough for the three of us. Lost points on service as there seemed to be only two servers responsible for the floor and the lounge area. The options were brought out to us from the menu and we were slightly disappointed in a couple of the choices. Pepperoni pizza and spaghetti... seemed like a lack luster choice from the menu options. The food is delicious and the owner is extremely friendly. My girlfriend and I showed up at about 2:30, which is a half-hour past the last official seating time for lunch, but he said we could sit anyway. You get a good amount of food and you can get seconds if you like at no additional cost. The only thing I would suggest to make the place a bit better is to get a list of what you're eating so you know what to ask for if you want seconds. read more

If I could give less than 1 star I would. Brutal experience, service was good but we were told after two hours that we would need to move as a large party was coming in. They started setting up the room around us. We were offered a table in the lounge which we accepted, then instead of being sat at a table we were sat at the service bar top near the kitchen. Kitchen staff came out to dip their glasses Into the ice well without using an ice scoop not only unsanitary but also dangerous because of possible glass chips and breakage in ice. When we brought our concerns up to what appeared to be the manager that we were not enjoying our experience - We were told it was common knowledge that the restaurant did two hour seatings, even though we were not informed about this when we first made a reservation. I agreed that this would be common knowledge if this information was shared with us when we first made the reservation. Or when they asked to move my reservation to an earlier time slot to accommodate THEM better they could have had a chance to tell me then. The manager then said that's the way it is. I was very surprised at the lack of concern by the management about our experience he asked what I wanted him to do about it and said sorry in a sarcastic way. We were passed 2 x 10% off coupons after our dinner. Food was bland. As guests we were made to feel as though we were inconveniencing the restaurant. Definitely do not recommend! read more

Had a group reservation for this weekend for brunch... Our service was horrible (worst I have ever had in my life) food was good, however we never did end up even getting it all, and were there for well over two hours. Were lied to by multiple staff members when we had asked to speak to a manager who was apparently coming to talk to us ( there was no manager there) also was told by our very rude waitress again that she will send out the owner if we would like because she clearly didn't want to or cared to hear our concerns. Which we waited and waited to the point where most of my party had left and o stayed behind to see if anyone else would come out. I came here to celebrate my birthday with friends. The original reservation was for 9 people, but the morning of, I had a few more people ask if they could still come, so I called four hours before and asked if it would be possible to change the reservation to 12 rather than 9, and was a bit surprised by how grumpy the person I spoke with on the phone was. I would have understood if it simply wasn't possible, but the reluctance was weird. I also specified that there was an infant coming, but there was no seat placed there or offered in any way. The room we were placed in was empty apart from our group, yet we were given two tables of six rather than one for 12, which was annoying and not what I had asked for at all. Our server was either very shy or very hostile, speaking so quietly that literally no one could hear her. Someone mentioned that we were there for my birthday. The only acknowledgement she gave this was to forget to bring my mimosa - she was one short, which she didn't appear to realize at the time, and the person she didn't give one to was me. It was the first time any of us were there, so all we had to go on was the online menu, which cites the weekend brunch as a savoury course and then a sweet course. It doesn't say that it's really "main course plus dessert", which is what it was in reality, and the server refused to bring anyone seconds until dessert had been served. The food was okay. Just okay. The main course included a half croissant with scrambled eggs and a mushroom sauce. The croissant itself was delicious, the best I've had since leaving Québec. The eggs and mushroom sauce were both way too salty. The dessert course was plain and chocolate waffles (unexciting) served with something that was described as strawberry pudding (which was just a whip, not a pudding at all) and fruit sauces, blueberry and cranberry. We were all hoping that the red one was cherry, but alas. There wasn't enough sauce for anyone. We asked for seconds on the waffles, but the server only brought seconds for the person who made the request, rather than for the entire table. All in all, not the best experience. read more

We rented out the private dining room upstairs for a bachelorette party. Everything from accommodating a paint night party, to table arrangements to the spectacular food was over and beyond what we could have hoped for. It was a great evening and a memorable celebration. So very dissatisfied with the food and service this past visit. We had been here twice previously and it was fabulous. We were so looking forward to taking my mother from out of the city and I had talked about it all weekend prior to taking her to brunch this past Sunday. First thing, we had a reservation that they were unprepared for, even though the place was basically empty. Secondly, the lattes that we ordered lukewarm at best. Thirdly, the savoury platter was served entirely on one platter. Which is fine but what they called hashbrowns was simply a huge pile of deep-fried french fries topped with the worst poached eggs I've ever had, hard balls of yellow yokes and slimy egg whites on top of the french fries and that was it. Hash browns I think not! The other part of the savoury platter consisted of an indescribable, cold penne pasta. It was simply awful. We did get a separate plate of salad, which consisted of simply shredded head lettuce with an obvious bottled ranch dressing. Piled on top were 6 strips of bacon that had been under the heat lamp for no less than 24 hours. I could barely, if at all, cut it with my knife. And what really was the most frustrating aspect of this meal, was the fact that our sweet platter arrived midway through our savoury platter, simply placed on the table with barely a brief description. The sweets platter, again by the time that we finally got around to eating it was cold, and served with a minuscule amount of whipped cream. We were frustrated beyond reason at this point. I was so disappointed that I wanted to just leave but my husband wanted to stick it out, I will point out that that we were never offered clean plates in which to eat our sweets on and so used our slimy yolk and pasta plates. I know previously that the sweets were not offered until the savoury course was done and any requests for additional orders had been eaten. And fresh, clean plates arrived as well. We did mention when we left and we're paying that our experience was unsatisfactory at best and we were given a $10 off coupon for 'next time'. Not much use to use because we're not coming back. That's not even debatable. It was the worst brunch I have ever had. read more

This was my third time dining at the Chaise Cafe & Lounge, and it certainly wasn't a charm! The service was extremely slow and our server was extremely inattentive. She never did bring me my Pepsi with lime! It wasn't even busy, so I'm not sure where she disappeared to. As for the food, it was very disappointing. The risotto balls, mashed potato poutine, and mushroom tortellini were delicious, but the other pasta was flavourless, the pizzas were dried out completely, with more crust than toppings, and the pork tenderloin and shrimp were very bland, and lukewarm. I'm guessing that the food had been left sitting for quite some time before being brought to the table. The two friends that were with me had never been there before, and were very underwhelmed. Having dined there before, I know that they are capable of much better. Although the food wasn't up to par, it was the poor service that really put me off.
