I was looking forward to having lunch at this spot today. Walk through the door and stood waiting to be seated or greeted or acknowledged. No one actually spoke, but nodded to where to sit and then l waited and waited and waited as they started bringing food. Confused I let them know. I'm not part of this party. I just want to eat lunch. As everyone in the restaurant looked on, I was told to move to another table that wasn't set up. Again, I waited and waited and finally went up to the counter. Got a menu and said I' would like to order lunch. Lady behind the counter took my order and brought me water, again I waited and waited. The group came in. I watched as they served them food, refilled glasses while again l waited and waited. I tried to get someone's attention to no avail. Approaching the half an hour mark, I walked up to the counter and waited to be noticed I spoke to the same lady who took my order and asked where my food was. She looks back at the kitchen and said my food isn't ready. I don't think they ever started it. I told her to cancel it as the same patrons watched me leave. I don't know if this was because of the large group or racism, but this place is not welcoming or friendly, I will not be coming back. read more

A friend asked me if I wanted to meet up with him and his family for Thai food. Unfortunately thats all that happened and there was no meet up. A year after that invite I decided to go and check out the place myself. Chai Thung is refreshing to see menu items that is not the typical pad thai, pineapple fried rice, etc. I saw other items like Chinese broccoli with crispy pork, Crispy trout w green apple salad, and Salty fish fried rice. Every item ordered was delicious. So much that I returned the following week with different friends just to try more items on their menu. They do have a thai only menu. I have been coming here since I was a little girl. Every time I would visit LA I would always ask my grandmother. Can we please go to Chai Thung? This place is definitely nostalgic for me. They have always provided outstanding service. They work super hard and very attentive. It is a small family owned business which is amazing. I definitely support small owned. They work really hard to provide delicious and the best quality food. Here are some of my favorite dishes to order here that are a staple of this restaurant. -Pad Thai Chai Thung -Pet Noi (little spicy in Thai) -Pad Se Ew -Rad Na (Like pad se ew, but with a delicious brown gravy) -Larb salad (beef) -Pork jerky -Tom yum soup -Thai Iced Tea -Thai coffee -Chang Beer (Thai beer) This place can get busy at times, but they were super quick. The place is super clean very neat and tidy. The restrooms are also super clean and neat and tidy, which is a plus. The portions here are very big and absolutely worth the price. The prices are great for what you get. I recommend dining inside. The food taste phenomenal no right when it gets to your table in my honest opinion, I prefer to eat in person rather than to go just because I like the freshness of the food. The outside of this strip mall may make you second guess your decision, but never judge a book by its cover is the moral of this story. We made the drive out from the westside and the food did not disappoint. We were a party of 3, 2 adults and 1 child. We were greeted and seated promptly. We ordered Chinese broccoli with crispy pork, papaya salad, pork jerky, and pad Thai with chicken for the kiddo. 75 bucks before tip and left there full and happy! This is a small, no frills location w minimal ambience, but you come here for the food and fair prices. The place is clean, cozy and the staff is all very pleasant and welcoming. Authentic Thai food in a whole in the wall plaza. I spent many years in Thailand so this is the real deal. Of course if you want authentic Thai, they will literally tell the chefs "this if for Thai customers." So bring a friend if you have one for the real deal! Dishes are rad Nah pork not shrimp with the large noodles. The Nam khao tod. The papaya salad and pork jerky is good. Those are the go-to dishes for me. Chai Thung Thai food is an underrated restaurant. This Sun Valley gem has some of the best Thai food Southern California has to offer - better than some popular spots in Thai town in Hollywood. Here they specialize in Central, Southern, and Northeastern (Isaan) Thai regional cooking. Location: This restaurant is located in the ugliest strip mall I ever seen in my life, but the great news is your here for the DELICIOUS food, also they have ample parking, and it's pretty safe. LOL, at least the numerous times I been there. Basically, if your serious about Thai food you will love this place! It's home style Thai food;however, elevated. Focus is on taste NOT presentation. And definitely your not there for the ambience! Another kinda cool thing is that there is a "SECRET MENU", not so secret if you can read Thai. Ask them to translate (good luck) or bring a friend that can read Thai. I personally ask the really nice owner why they don't offer an English translation for the "secret menu" and he said to me, "it is because the 'Farangs' (non-Thais) won't eat or like the menu". I absolutely disagree!! Another thing worth mentioning is the SPICY levels: it's either Mild, Medium, Spicy, or Thai spicy. I would stick to mild or medium even if you love "spicy". The Thai auntie (chef) doesn't play! Spicy or Thai spicy here can strip paint, am sure. Conclusion : I will boldly say that this is one of the BEST THAI restaurants (top five/5) in Los Angeles area that I been to (AND, the LOW Yelp ratings for this restaurant is absurd...one yelper gave this place 2stars, because they were "thristy" after eating here. WHATEVER!). Chai Thung is reputable in the Thai community. It truly says something when other well-known Thai restaurant owners and Thai chef eats here. Currently during Covid19 restrictions it's TAKE-OUT only. No Al Fresco. I recommend Chai Thung to anyone seeking great tasting Thai food at an unbelievable value. read more

One of the best Thai food based on the price range. Since I work close by, I tried a most of their menu items & loved almost all of it and can't complain about any of them. Salted shrimp is really amazing. The only minor thing I'd say is the amount. I usually get a lot more from other place's salt & pepper shrimp. Fried Calamari was really great. Must orders for me: Radna (gravy noodles) with tender pork, Pad Thai Chai Thung (a bit spicy but good), som tum, pork jerky with the sticky rice, spicy fried catfish salad. I like going to Chai Thung when I'm in the valley. One of the better Thai restaurants out here. The restaurant is small though and they're pretty busy. Excellent crab fried rice. Parking is not an issue as restaurant is located in a strip mall. Interior is simple and clean. Most importantly is the food tastes great. I've heard good things about this place but once I got there I noticed the sign said it was a Thai-Chinese place. How good can the Thai food really be? Well, I didn't have time to dine in so I ordered a few items for take out along with a Thai iced coffee and Thai iced tea. Hmm...surprisingly, this place was satisfying. The pork jerky was one of the best I've ever tasted. It wasn't oily at all. In fact, it wasn't fatty and a few pieces were slightly crispy. It was so good by itself I didn't even use the dipping sauce it came with. I also ordered the pad Thai Chai Thung with shrimp, which is an off menu item and comes slightly spicy. I'm not a big fan of pad Thai but this was tasty too. There was a slight hint of tamarind without being too sweet, oily, or peanutty. Chicken pad see ew is another item that's not easy to get right. Here, the noodles were separated well, cooked evenly and the sauce was the perfect combination of sweet and salty. I liked the bits of egg in it too. I only tried three things. I wouldn't necessarily call this place authentic, but hey, they dishes were all very good. I'll probably go back again and try my favorite Thai dish, gai kra pow (minced chicken with Thai basil) and see how it holds up. read more

I was meeting a friend driving from Glendale to Fresno so she wanted to stay by the 5 freeway. We both love Thai food so I picked this place that I found on Yelp that was a block away from the freeway with lots of parking. The place was small and family owned. The employees were very nice and helpful and prices were very reasonable. We ordered the following: Spicy Beef Salad - Great flavor, should have ordered it with tofu. The beef was very tough and had a weird after taste. Chicken Pad Thai - Same thing as our Spicy Beef Salad. I should have ordered it with tofu. The chicken was dark meat and it too had a weird after taste. But the overall taste was very good. I would definitely again but just go vegetarian. read more

I came here with my family since we were looking for a new thai place to try and one of my mom's friends recommended it to her. The location of this place is not in the best area and the restaurant is definitely not fancy, more of a hole in the wall. We ordered a few dishes (pork jerky, papaya salad with fried catfish, spicy curry catfish, and fish with thai toppings like lemon grass etc). The food came slowly one after the other, but each time it arrived at our table we knew it was just cooked. The catfish papaya salad was great. The papaya salad was the right flavor and consistency and the catfish was nicely fried. The spicy curry catfish was very hot temperature wise like it was just fried. The flavor was just right. The pork jerky was just fried and very tasty. The fish with thai topping was very nicely fried and the flavor was great. The food was excellent. Sadly the restaurant was empty besides our table. Hopefully it becomes more popular. On a side note as we were leaving the restaurant, there was a truck selling fruit for cheap parked in front of the market two doors down. We have never purchased fruit from the back of a truck so we stopped by and ended up buying a few things. Fruit was great overall, so something else to look for if you stop by. read more
