The taste of the curry was acceptable; the chicken curry was sweet. Both the chicken in the chicken curry and the chicken sa-te was very dry. At one point, it resembled overcooked an dry, tough fish. The brown (peanut?) sauce to dip the chicken sa-te was probably the best part of the meal, even better than the rice. Nat is the friendly face who runs the front and does some cooking in the back along with her husband. It's a family operation with even her sons helping out. Great Mom & Pop operation. 1) Angel Wings: Crunchy fried batter. Chicken wings are deboned and stuffed with coarse ground chicken meat, saifun glass noodles, green onion, dash of Nam Pla/fish sauce. Accompanied by red onion, cucumber vinegar salad to refresh the palate. And sweet, mild Thai chile sauce. 2) Pad Ki Mao: This version seems to be a cross between Pad Si Yu since it has a bit of thickened sweet soy sauce along with Thai Basil, Nam Pla, broccoli, onion, red bellpepper. Wide Pappardelle-like thick rice pasta. 3) Mi Krob/Mee Grop: Thin angel hair rice noodles are deep fried and puff up for light crunchiness. Tossed in a sweet tomato sauce spiked with Nam Pla. Airy, dry, crunchy fried Tōfu adds even more texture. Goes great with Somtum Salad. 4) Somtum Thai Papaya Salad; Shredded unripe papaya having a coarser, more fibrousness than Daikon radish. Dressed in lime, vinegar sweet-sour dressing. Deep Nam Pla fish sauce funky Umami, crushed pan roasted peanuts, sour tomatillo, fresh red chile bits, cherry tomato. Impressed with the generous scattering of meaty sea Umami, salt preserved dried, fat shrimps that I had never experienced in other Somtum. 5) Whole Fried Sea Bass: Expertly fried in hot vegetable oil to crisp the skin. The meat inside varies from soft, moist deep inside to dry, chewy near the surface for good textural contrast. Fresh crispy, watery, raw cucumber are provided to refresh the palate. Sah Larb sauce: Complex concoction of lime, soy sauce, Nam Pla, toasted, dried crushed red chiles, cilantro leaf, red onion, green onion , vinegar, touch of sour tamarind. It's the Thai analog of Japanese Ponzu sauce. 6) Chicken Larb: Special patty of minced chicken meat marinated in Nam Pla and plenty of garlic. Moist with satisfying earthy meatiness. Usual larb is ground and sautéed so it looks friable and loose. This fried Larb is exceptional. I would like to see this stuffed into Angel Wings for extra richness. Once you get to know Nat and her family, there is a chance you will meet their other patron friends, and share each others' food family style which is really cool.
