The food here is excellent, fairly priced, and well portioned. Unfortunately the service was all around awful. The hostess was very rude for reasons unknown. The waitress took forever to take our order and forgot items. Once we finally got our food, they didn't come to our table once even though our drinks were empty. In fairness, it was a busy Saturday morning, so maybe that was it. Unfortunately for this being my first experience the impression was not good. Today, a special day, decided to come to eat here. While the food is good, the ambience and service today was on the verge of horrible. Since I was not alone, I decided to compose myself so that my companions do not miss out on their meals. While this is a working class restaurant, managers and owners should review their personnel for lacking service qualifications and/or desire to work. My main complaint comes from our server, who was lacking in all aspects of the waitress performance. A simple welcome or acknowledgement should set the tone for a future exchange. Taking an order is simple, but ensuring that the food requested is what one requested is the critical component. Expeditious service does not topple accuracy. Now, the lack of interest and simplicity of service is the portion where my experience on today's event make a left turn. A massive component, if not the most important one is the dinning experice of not coming back to ensure that the order was as requested. In comparison, the other servers around us, were attentive and cordial towards their guest. Even the simple 'would you like a refill' or 'is there anything else?' would have come out as a genuine interest of service. But passing by, saying nothing and seen one inch of water left in the glass is absolutely fatal. Truly, this restaurant, which I have been coming for years, had a different vibe super lacking from my pasts experiences. Now it seems, is based on a luck of a draw to acquire a good server/waitress. The lights are dimmed, the air is cool and the music is soft and inviting. You would want to eat a meal here and just sit and chat over a cafecito or some other beverage. The food comes out in nice sized portions. I went for the namesake dish, the carne asada cereal negro, which was steak (medium), gallo pinto (Nicaraguan beans and rice), and tostones. The menu items are endless and the breakfast are delicious. I mainly only go for breakfast and I'll order the eggs with chorizo, fried cheese and signature gallopinto. The carne asada is another delicious choice! the restaurant is very small, crowded and tight in space (stroller and wheelchair) are acceptable but I will say it's a tough maneuver. The service is excellent always! food comes out quick, hot and I would high recommend a Milca soda or Carrot/Orange juice. That's my favorite - so refreshing and extremely healthy. I've been coming to this place for as long as I can remember- most of my life, even before it became el Cerro Negro. It is a staple in the area and the Nicaraguan community. It has a ventanita "little window" where you can get your dose of coffee with a side of some tostada for breakfast. There's two schools on the other side of the street so you can hear that exact order from everyone at that time but during the rest of the day you can pick up your food from here as well instead of going inside. I've never been disappointed by any of the plates I've ordered but my favorite by far is the punta de filete en salsa jalapeña- it is mouth watering! I've recommended this place to a few people not from Miami and they have all loved it so if you're thinking about trying it out, don't think it about it twice just go :) read more

This used to be the best nica sit-down in Sweetwater... But last night we ordered a out 4 servicios: 1 carne asada with gallo pinto and maduros, 1 pubtelas de filete al jalapeño with gallo pinto and maduros, 1 carne desmenuzada (ropa vieja) with gallo pinto and tajadas, a bistec encebollado with white rice and tortillas and a baby churrasco with gallo pinto and fries and three fried cheeses. What happened? Did you change cooks? All of the steaks were not seasoned at all except for the bistec encebollado but it didn't have that Nica taste. The gallo pinto was burned underneath...so while eating it you would bite into burned pieces of rice and beans (see photo). The jalapeno sauce was thickened with corn starch and was shiny and gummy (NOT GOOD!) with no cream in sight. The cheese was ok but barely fried...very white. Please find another cool hopefully a Nica one that knows the taste cause I don't want to go to the pretentious Madroño down the street. read more

Love this place! I came here one afternoon for lunch with my coworkers; one of which who recommended we go there. Since I'd never been there, I couldn't appreciate the renovations that my coworker kept raving about but it was nice and spacious. We all ordered off of the lunch menu and my one coworker ordered a appetizer for the table which was like sample platter with fried cheese, beans and a bunch of other stuff. That was all delicious might I add. I ordered one of the lunch specials which was very generous in portion size. I even had some to take home for that evening. This place is definitely a hidden gem in Miami. I wonder how long this place has been around because I went to middle school right across the street and have been at my job for years and never heard about it. I had the cerdo asado (grilled pork) with gallopinto (mixed rice and red beans), maduro (sweet plantains), and a side of queso frito(fried cheese) and it was all so delicious! Also tried the carne desmenusada (shredded beef) with white rice and it was perfectly seasonal and cooked! We have been loyal customers for years. For the past year, every time we go the service is absolutely horrible. The girls work like they are upset to be there. We keep going back because we love the food even though they took off our favorite enchiladas from the menu and the portions of the food keep getting smaller and smaller. This past Monday we walked in with our service dog and our kids. The lady who greeted us told us the dog wasn't allowed. She send over another lady to ask me for her certificate. I told her by law she's not allowed to ask me. She insisted! We got up and left. We called and asked to speak to owner and a lady who claimed to be the manager answered and said she needs to see documents as well. She clearly doesn't know the law either! This was the icing on the cake for us to never go back. Do yourself a favor and go to Madroño Across the street on Flagler and 107ave. Food was amazing, service was on point, prices were cheaper. I usually come here with my Nicaraguan family for breakfast or late lunch. They make good Nica food and service is a hit or miss depending on which waitress you get. My brother always get the special breakfast with carne asada along with the eggs and everything else the basic breakfast has. The rest of my families usually get the huevos rancheros or desayuno criollo that comes with beans or gallopinto, cheese, crema and tortilla. The other must get are the repochetas which it's tortilla with cheese, crema, and cabbage salad on top with some special sauce. YUMMY! I know heavy duty breakfast but trust me you won't be disappointed. The price for the food is fine and the place isn't too big or small. There is plenty of parking and service is quick. I have been coming here for a few years and during covid we had been ordering take out and last week was our first time back in the restaurant and wow it looks amazing! They did some renovations and it looks much better. Definitely needed the upgrade. The food here soooo good! And the best thing is that their consistent. They never have a off day, every time you order whether its dine in or out, you wont be disappointed. Their Carne Asada is one of the best things on the menu, and their chimichurri is one of the best that I've had. Their Ropa Vieja is also perfect, great portion and soo flavorful. Thinking about it, makes me want to go back! And of course, you cannot forget to order the queso frito to whatever it is that you get, it is a must! I have been coming to Cerro Negro for many years now. And my stars are based on a compilation between the 5 stars food and 3 stars service. Like I said, variety is offered. One thing that stands out for me here is their Milanesa Chicken. I have ordered this in many places and Lord knows I love to eat. Their size (see my picture) and the sauce the put in between the ham/cheese is worthy of getting repeatedly. I have and I will, unless when I'm cautious about those little things we love to heat (calories) Lunch menu is priced to come back. I ordered a grilled fish that was the size you love to get. Prices are close to $8 and they bring two sides and it includes soda. What are you waiting for? Tip: fried cheese was more than half of my plate and they bring two not so spicy sauce that if pour on it can get tastier. umm Service: Well I will keep it short not to impact the business, after all they are established for many years and servicing locals and making folks happy. I felt rushed, several times. Today for example as I was ordering, the server was pulling the menu from me. I had to order my appetizer out loud as he was walking away. I couldn't look at the menu longer for dessert. Usually other places ask if we prefer the appetizer first or with the food. I missed that. When the food was available, it was put on yhe corner of the table as the server continued walking. The guy in a hurry didn't comeback and ask if my food was good, not if I needed anything. Bill came, dropped and left. Someone else did come by and ask if I wanted more water or anything else since I stayed on my table (writing this review) Perhaps in other times of the day they are busier and therefore used to the rush but sadly the service is lower than their goods.
