I love ceramics places! They are the perfect place for a girls day or even a fun date. The employees at this specific one are wonderful! The selection is fantastic and the prices are totally reasonable! I love that they have a mosaic section also. Unfortunately, I will not be retuning to this location due to poor business practices by the owner. Although our service (by a young female employee) was excellent, we witnessed the owner be horribly rude to another customer that had spent several hours painting an item with her little boy only to be told the price that she was quoted at the beginning was incorrect (because of misuse of a coupon on the store's part). I watched this poor woman and her young son walk out disappointed because of the last minute price increase that the owner refused to let go. The woman, totally in the right, left her painted item on the table. I believe they, as a business owner, you stand behind your employees mistakes... Love the selection and the employees are always friendly and helpful. Due to COVID, They have tables outside which we used today. I was disappointed that the employees only had disposable face shields & not masks. Also, a couple was painting with their masks down inside the entire time. Given the employees walk all around helping people, we tried to keep our distance, stay outside other than getting paint & wore our masks the entire time, but would have liked the courtesy returned. We have a yearly tradition of painting ornaments in December, but will likely not risk it again until the pandemic is over given they don't wear masks or enforce them. Would give 5 stars for non pandemic experience, but have to knock off a few because it's just not acceptable to have customer facing employees that roam all over where you are picking out paint without masks. Again, love the friendliness, selection and understand the high prices go along with Del Mar rents, but please reconsider and add masks to your employees required attire during the pandemic, it's a basic courtesy. read more

We've been coming here for years. Even had 2 birthday parties here when my kids were much younger. It's a great way to spend a couple of hours and have fun and relax while doing something a little different. The reason I am giving them a four and not a five is because at the end you have to give your item in to be fired and then you have to come back to get it a week later. 5-stars if you're doing it with the Groupon! I'm not sure if it's still on the site, but it's $15 for $30 worth of products. Came here to do something different on our anniversary. They have a wide array of ceramics you can pick from and prices ranging from around $12-$45. Maybe more or less, I didn't check all products. Everything you do is included in the price of the ceramic you're painting, so paint away and use as many stencils and whatever else you want. They also do some stained glass. Not exactly sure how that works, but I overheard some people talking about it. There is a poster on the wall regarding painting techniques, but make sure you're using at least three coats of paint, especially your base colors, because you don't want naked spots to show through after they've been glazed and put in the fire. I painted a medium sized container for dog treats, came out to $38+tax, so had to pay $8 since it was over the $30 Groupon. Boyfriend painted a dog and it came out to a little under $30, so we didn't have to pay any extra. Definitely come here with some patience because the painting takes a lot longer than I realized. We were here for 3 hours and definitely could have been here longer if we were painting bigger items or were painting with more detail. Towards the end we were tired and ready to go home. Also, make sure to make an appointment. Unless you're getting here right when they open, there is a good chance they'll be packed. We called and they recommended making an appointment just to be on the safe side. Glad we did because by the time we were leaving, every table was occupied. The people working here were really friendly, quick to clean up every table/mess to prepare it for the next people to sit down, and brushes and ceramic plates to put paint on were being washed constantly. I've never done ceramics before, so I didn't know it wouldn't be all done the same day. Definitely something to know. We painted on a Sunday and our stuff won't be available for pick up until Friday. I went to CeramiCafe last night with a good friend as part of her birthday celebration. I chose this place due to the evening BYO option so that I could bring along a bottle of our favorite wine and a cheese platter. When we arrived, we were a bit overwhelmed with all of the options of things to paint, so it took quite a while to pick a piece and get started on our ideas. Upon our arrival, there were several tables with kids who were finishing their products from birthday parties. As it got a bit later, a few other groups of ladies came in with wine and snacks. For the most part, service was really good. I had sent an email requesting a time and asking about the BYO option, and got a prompt reply. When we arrived, our table had a reserved sign for us. The lady at the front counter was friendly and responsive to our questions. I do wish that there had been a few more examples or instructional guides around, as it was our first time there and I just didn't quite know what to do. All, in all, we had a great time. We did not feel rushed, and had a lot of fun painting and talking over a bottle of our favorite wine! We get to pick up our finished product in 5 days. The best way to go is probably buy a Groupon because this place can a bit pricey especially if you go in a group. Best to go early or on a less busy day because merchandise will be limited and it's hard to find an empty table to paint. It can get crowded on a weekend but staff was friendly as possible with customers asking questions and asking for paint. However, it is a fun experience overal to get creative. read more

LOST same order not once but TWICE and then gave us the wrong products!!! My daughter and I went to the shop back in May. She was painting a piece that she wanted as a memorial to her pet that died. When we went to pick up our pieces that we had each painted, They could only find my painted peace and not my daughters. They said they would call us if they found it. No call. They finally called us four months later and told us that have both of our finished pieces. they would donate or dispose of it if it wasn't picked up that month. When I told her what happened, She was apologetic and said she'd hold onto it. I had no idea how they would've had both of our pieces since I've already had mine but hoping the other was my daughters. Then, on our way to pick it up, we called to make sure it was there and to have it ready. They said they couldn't find it...AGAIN! 20 minutes later they said they found it in to come pick it up. When I arrived, there was a man at the shop waiting to pick his up. When the staff member emerged from the back room she told him that she couldn't find HIS finished piece and would call him later. WOW, really?!? They need to get their inventory system in order pronto! I brought the item home to my daughter and discovered that it wasn't even the right one! Well we had purchased a Groupon and decided to check it out! We wanted something new for the home that matched the decor and we prefer custom painted items as my wonderful lady and I enjoy creating customized items. She choose a turtle dish and I decorated a candle Votive. The staff was very helpful and everything was easy to figure out. Tip to newbies remember three layers to get your color to come out right, and Paint according to sample color not the color you see coming out of the bottle, Unless you enjoy surprises then have at it your item will look very different when you come to pick it up than you expect. Horrible experience! Painted frames for Mother's Day. The shop 'lost' the frames so we didn't have them for the holiday. They miraculously found them a week later and did the absolute worst job gluing the back of the frame in place. By the time I got home, the backing was falling off and the frame was unusable. Tried to go there this afternoon, was a HUGE birthday party of 12+ breaking every public health law. We couldn't even go in. Kids were running all over the place without masks we could not walk by neighboring stores to leave because they were everywhere. The yoga/soccer/pilates moms could not be bothered to leave their unmasked chitchat to corral their kids. The outside tables were covered in cupcakes and food brought for the party. It was disturbing that this group had so little regard for other customers and that they were allowed to stay. I was very disappointed with the party I held here last Friday. This is in no reflection on the poor host that was handling our party, but in whomever does the scheduling for this place! I paid $55 for a party host, cupcakes and fruit punch. Instead I received a young girl who was so busy running the register and having to help the entire store She had no time for our party. I felt terrible for her trying to manage it all. Had I known I was going to be refilling paints and cleaning the tables I would of just showed up and took over tables and not paid for a host. The cupcakes were from vons, I could of made better ones! There were no drinks and when I had to ask where they were, she knew nothing about it. Instead we received pink lemonade mix served with Dixie cups that due to how small they were, they needed to be refilled a ton of times by one of my guests parents, because our host had to run the register!!! It was very disappointing. I actually wrote the owner requesting my deposit back and received no response which upset me even more. I will not be hosting or recommending this place to my friends. I feel when asking for a non-refundable $55 deposit that does not even get applied to the party, then you should make sure that the few things listed are given to the customer. I did not feel I was given a party host, I certainly didn't relax! You may want to consider Staffing schedules the next time you have a party of 10 kids coming in on a Friday before a holiday! read more

Beware your items will come back with chipped paint spots even when everything was thoroughly painted! There were also black marks on the piece that weren't there before. Such a shame when you spend time and money on something. When you get there they also don't really review any helpful tips for new comers. Visited the Del Mar store over the weekend. A very refreshing experience because I've never been to a ceramic store before. You can choose the ceramic of your choice which usually is between $10-40. The paints, stencil etc. are for no cost and you can use as much as you need. The staff is proactive and was quick to clean up the tables once we chose a place to sit. Overall a good experience. We were told it would take 5 days to be finished, went back 10 days later and it wasnt there. They said they would call us the next day, they didnt. Very disappointed with the service here. I came on a Saturday for a friend's party. 4 of us painted items. Although we had a great time when we were there the issue came with picking up the items. They were supposed to be ready the following Thursday. I came on Saturday instead and only 3 of the 4 pieces were done being glazed and fired. No one called to tell me they would not be ready on the promised date (set by their standards). I live 25 minutes away from the store and am not down in that area frequently so it's not easy to stop by. We asked about having the final item shipped and they were unable to do that. They basically made no attempt to accommodate THEIR mistake and just told me I had to come back to pick it up later. No discount, no alternative option. If I had known they were not all ready I would have saved myself the trip down. Not the way to treat customers in my opinion. read more
