Today, I got the chance to experience what the nation's top medical research agency had to offer. First & foremost, if you do not have to drive, PLEASE take Metro...hindsight regarding parking is most absolutely 20/20. Plus a little exercise doesn't hurt anybody. I had an interview today, yet not before the 'screening for access' took place: Pull vehicle forward. Turn off engine. Leave door open. & then take all of your belongings, including every piece of computer & or electronic devices on your person. While the vehicle was getting screened, so was I. After a few minutes of having my ID scanned more ways than one, providing the small piece of paper from the initial license plate log in, I was giving a temporary visitor pass with a full headshot & my name displayed. I was then allowed to go on my way. A way that took 30 minutes of following the map to the dedicated building. Actually, locating the building only took 10 minutes with a couple of u-turns here & there, yet finding parking was the most time consumption. Kudos to the NIH police officer off the Old G-Town Road gateway entry for pointing me in the right direction to a MLP (Multi-Level Parking garage) that had spaces available. I'm sure if I passed him one more time, he would not have been as friendly. :-) Although I arrived 45 minutes early, I was now against the clock from finding the building & a parking space. & in clutch mode, the kind spirited parking attendant MLP-6 heard my internal plea & told me to leave my keys with her & to be on my way...THANK YOU Ms. T -working the AM shift! After a few more friendly fingers pointing me in the right direction, I arrived to the laboratory, one of many massive laboratories housed in one building. Well perhaps I knocked on the wrong door at first, yet the Lab Techs & eventually the Lab Manager were all very nice turning me around to the appropriate laboratory. Every facet of a person I crossed paths with today, whether maintenance, law enforcement-security check in, clinical, scientific, & even an Educator, was simply pleasant & helpful. I can only imagine the camaraderie amongst everyone within these 27 different institutes that makes up NIH. & their own personal stamp in discovering innovations to improve health & or save lives. What an amazing & well manicured campus of greenery, LEED buildings, handicap parking spaces, parking buildings (mostly for permit holders), LED crosswalks, & of course the never ending maze of getting around.

He not only sees patients, but he passes his knowledge on to future generations of fertility doctors. You can tell he practices for the love of his work. After much research and experience with other doctors/practices in the field, we found Dr. Muasher. During our research, I came across a statement from someone who stated, "You love the fertility doctor who gets you pregnant." Well, I think that can be true to some extent but I also think the journey is difficult enough without adding in a lack of compassion and personalization from the person you are putting all your hopes and money into. Our experience with Dr. Muasher was extremely personalized as we were only followed by him. We didn't waste cycle after cycle "trying" this and that. He made changes according to each cycle, minimizing our time and energy, which becomes precious over multiple attempts. He also showed a level of professionalism and integrity that you don't see all the time from doctors. His staff loves and respects him. As a doctor myself, that is huge! He may not be the "warm and fuzzy" type, but he cares and supports you through the process in a way that you feel calm and cared for. That was really important to us after our experiences at larger practices. Last bit: While we did not to do the "shared risk" plan that is ever so popular now, it ended up being less expensive with him paying each time. For that we were extremely grateful as we paid out of pocket for his services. And yes, we did get pregnant with twins! Expecting in April, 2011!

In the meantime, they instructed me to go to Urgent Care or the ER! Several other times, owing to minor issues such as ear infections and conjunctivitis, they insisted I do a Telehealth appointment or otherwise, go to Urgent Care or the ER. Further, annual physicals have not been comprehensive. Moreover, for my first physical with Barnard Medical, they assigned a medical student to conduct it, in its entirety (w/o any other doctors present). In addition, this was despite the fact that I had requested, in writing in my medical records, that I did not agree to be seen by medical students. It appears as if the doctors rarely even come into the office! The lovely Nurse Practitioner, Kristine, is the gem that seems to hold the office together! She shows both care and concern, and although there is a lag time to see her, too, at least you can get an appointment with her in person (eventually).

Dr. Hennessy saw me through my first pregnancy, but I received care from many of the doctors on…read morestaff during that time, and I feel the care I received was excellent. I chose the practice because of Dr. Bannon's reputation, however, she wasn't taking new patients when I registered. I met with Dr. Hennessy and really liked her. Each time I went in for a check-up I saw her, and received an ultrasound to confirm that all was well with the pregnancy. Their ultrasound equipment isn't very state of the art, but it's enough to see baby and that it is growing as it should. Dr. Hennessy tends to speak rather fast, which at times can come across as dismissive or that she's trying to rush through the appointment. I recently had it brought to my attention that I can tend to speak this way at work, which made me realize that it's just her manner of speaking and not that she's actually trying to push you out the door. As a first time mother I was rather neurotic and I was never made to feel that I was pestering them with ridiculous questions. Dr. Hennessy was very open to what I wanted (be that a scheduled c-section or a natural birth from start to finish) and didn't make me feel as if one was right or wrong. My mother-in-law had a previous traumatic experience with pregnancy loss. Dr. Hennessy was great with giving us things we could tell her to put her at ease and at one point letting her come back to see an ultrasound to reassure her that everything really was OK with this pregnancy. In the end, due to timing, Dr. Hennessy didn't deliver my baby, another doctor at the practice did. He was fantastic, friendly and made me feel as at ease as he could, considering that I wound up with an emergency c-section (my son was rather large). The after care I received was attentive, and excellent. Dr. Armstrong saw me the day after my delivery and explained to me, in detail, the pros and cons of circumcision as well as the after care I would need (he also explained this to my family, which was nice). So long as I'm in the area Dr. Hennessy will be my OB/GYN. I am deducting a star for the following reasons (really, not major). - The offices are rather small and cramped. It's hard to get around the hallways and the lab room. The rooms also leave a bit to be desired in terms of facilities and decor (looks like they haven't been updated since 1986). - Depending on who you get, the lab staff can be a bit cranky. There are a few who are just stellar, friendly, helpful, but there are a few who are grumpy and make you feel like you're an annoyance just by virtue of being there.

When Dr. Lawson came out to get me she took me back to her office for about a 10 - 15 minute consultation about my history, her background, and it was a really nice personable touch before taking me into the room for my appointment. Not that anyone truly enjoys getting their annual checkups, but for what it's worth this was just an all around pleasant experience and I definitely will recommend the practice to my girlfriends. *Ok the only downside is that during my consultation Dr. Lawson told me that sadly she will be moving back to Georgia this summer and mentioned the other doctors are really great and she also gave me a recommendation of a Primary Care Physician if I needed one.
