Excellent cheese. All from Pennsylvania. Also, owner is knowledgeable about products and often offers a sample.

You'll find plenty of European (and some Asian) imports, from pastas, to canned and jarred goods. Including the authentic versions of items you may find in grocery stores but with Americanized recipes/versions. All that being said, the best part is the friendly and very knowledgeable family that runs it! In addition to eating well, you're also supporting a deserving local business.

The shelves are packed with a huge selection of imported canned goods, pasta, cheeses, and so on. With the authentic ingredients imported directly from Europe, you can taste the origin of foods. Like the Parma prosciutto, the cured meat made under strict regulation in Italy with its mixed salty and sweet flavor. On the shelves, the cheese, tea, pickles are carefully catagorized and varied by type -- definately helpful for customers to find their hometown flavors. The wall decorations, includeing old photos and a map of Pennsylvania cheese, adding a real European vibe to the store. The store is not only a good place to seek for authentic ingredients for your meals, but also a wonderful spot to learn about European culture.

Any of the cheeses are readily available to sample upon request. The staff is always kind & knowledgeable about their products! In addition, a nice selection of frozen game meat is also available, I would highly recommend the boar sausages if you see them. Chips, hot sauce, seasoning, honey, and more can also be found at the shop for those looking to add a little extra to their charcuterie. Overall, great selection of items. So many delectable condiments (pickles, mustard, crackers, bread, butter, sardines, beautiful dish towels, wooden charcuterie boards, candles, chocolates, salamis and so much more. Today we received a tasting of gouda, blue and goat cheeses; yum! Free Gouda samples (nice sized chunks too), for opening day weekend. These owners are serious about their cheese, but not very friendly, at least from what I experienced. "I would like to sample one of these blues, please." "Nope, we don't have that one available for sampling." How would I be able to tell if I like it; I asked. Five different blue cheeses to choose from, what makes them different from one another, I asked. The male owner, in a condescending tone; "What exactly are you wanting to know? Do you want to know the intensity of the blue?" "Um, yeah; I guess." The owner responds, this one is soaked in a liquor (so, I'm thinking; ooh, I wanna try that one). I can't though, it's wrapped and it's not a cheese already out, for sampling. "What about the other blue cheeses, what are they like?" Right now, my voice is quavering; is it not okay to ask what the cheese tastes like? Now I'm reminiscing about Di Bruno Brothers cheese shop, in Little Italy Philadelphia, PA. They have an entire store of cheese and the personnel behind the massive counter, allows you to sample, till your hearts content, gushing about their cheeses and inquiring how you like the cheese. It's a full on cheesy experience. That experience was glorious, this was .. different. Though I must admit, the shop's layout, offerings, are all very tempting - to include those chocolate croissants, behind their glass case. According to one of the employees, some cheeses will be a constant fixture in this store, but as the seasons change, so will some of their other offerings. Sadly, not every cheese was available to sample, but co-workers will allow samples of whatever was ready that day. Do note that the cheese wrapped for sale, cannot be cut into smaller slices and re-wrapped, like some other cheese shops. Requesting a smaller portion, may not be done. I say this because, I may need only a specific amount for a recipe or to munch on, with one of your many crackers to choose among. Good cheese is expensive. I was also looking for some fresh baguettes, but the only bread available were in their freezer. Owners aside, Lititz Cheese Shop staff were helpful and friendly. Whatever you asked of them, they obliged and provided cheese knowledge.

Prior to arriving at each venue, we were provided some background and things we should know in advance. She more or less herded us from place to place, which was actually quite comforting. I felt very well taken care of AND seen as I was the only one on the tour not drinking, but I was provided water and other beverages over the course of the day. I told my wife, let's break tradition and serve something different for Thanksgiving. Instead of a supermarket ham, let's buy a smoked ham from the Amish country. I found online S. Clive Weaver. I called the store and spoke with the manager. I asked about the store hours as well as Thanksgiving Ham. (I'm thinking it's going to be a blood bath, 1000 people running into the store screaming HAM!) The manager assured me this is not the case, there will be plenty of boneless, smoked ham for us to choose. We pulled up to, it seems like a mini supermarket. Once inside, it felt like when the Wizard of Oz went from Black & White to color. There is EVERYTHING one would need for a holiday dinner. The first thing I noticed was the beautifully arrangement of baskets. There were multiple sizes of meat and cheese baskets, I never had a sweet salami? The blocks of cheese, were cubed and served to our Thanksgiving guests. Everyone loved the unique flavors that are not regional to where I live. They also had a pie station with many different flavors of homemade pies. I brought home a Shoo Fly Pie? Filled with the warm spices of the holiday, another hit with my Family. Now for the Ham, there was a wall of ham! Ham everywhere. I chose a hefty porker, it was very easy to cook. Again, everyone loved the flavor of the smoked ham that I snuck across state lines. S. Clive Weaver, it was a pleasure to shop at your establishment.

Some places are worth building an entire adventure around. Penn State Berkey Creamery is one of…read morethem. As fate would have it, my Adventure Buddy and I found ourselves in State College on National Ice Cream Day, and there was absolutely no way I was leaving town without finally visiting the home of my favorite ice cream flavor ever...Monkey Business (banana ice cream, peanut butter swirl, chocolate chips). I'd fallen in love with Monkey Business last summer after trying it at an ice cream shop close to my house, but somehow I'd never actually made it to the Creamery itself. Correcting that oversight immediately became part of the day's adventure plan! We arrived around 12:30 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, fully expecting National Ice Cream Day to mean complete chaos. Surprisingly, it wasn't. Busy? Absolutely. But the line moved quickly, everyone seemed to know exactly what they were doing and the whole operation ran like a well-oiled ice cream machine. Then I looked around. Cheese. Sticky buns. Chocolate milk. Bagels. Ice cream. Ice cream. More ice cream. At one point I turned to my Adventure Buddy and said..."I could live here." Ordering couldn't have been easier. First, you tell the cashier whether you're getting a cone, bowl or shake and pay. Then you move down to the ice cream counter, where you pick your flavor. Finally...you wait for your number to be called so someone can hand you what can only be described as an absurdly generous serving of happiness. While I waited, I sampled the Grilled Stickies flavor. Big mistake! It was phenomenal! For approximately fifteen seconds, I seriously considered abandoning my beloved Monkey Business and trying something new. Fortunately...I came to my senses. Monkey Business and I have history together. When my number was called, the gentleman behind the counter handed me a bowl that was significantly larger than I expected. And yes...I audibly squealed. Again. Right there in the middle of the Creamery. I looked at him and said, "You absolutely made my day!" Because he had. We found a table outside on the patio to enjoy the beautiful weather, performed a few completely necessary happy food dances and proceeded to enjoy every glorious bite of what is still, without question, my favorite ice cream flavor on Earth. For only $6. On National Ice Cream Day. Honestly, I don't know how that day could've gotten any better. PRO TIP: Don't skip the sample spoon! There are so many incredible flavors that it's worth trying something new before committing. Just be warned...you may accidentally discover another favorite! I also learned that Berkey Creamery ships ice cream to the lower 48 states. This information feels...dangerous. Living only about an hour and a half away, I probably don't need to have Monkey Business shipped directly to my house. But...I may have to test the process someday. You know...in the name of science! If you're anywhere near State College, do yourself a favor and make the stop. Whether you're a Penn State fan, an ice cream enthusiast or just someone who appreciates an exceptionally well-run small operation, Berkey Creamery absolutely lives up to its legendary reputation. WE ARE...ICE CREAM HEAVEN!
