"This is Texas? Surely this is really in Missouri or California." Yes, Marion Sansom Park is found…read morein the suburbs of Dallas/Fort Worth. And stop calling me Shirley. Turn off the main road through Avondale onto an old narrow street, and you'll arrive at a good sized hilly lawn that announces that you are at the park. It's conveniently located close to the 820 loop, and has a large parking lot. The park is named after a prominent rancher from the late 19th century, and overlooks Lake Worth, a reservoir created with an earthen dam in 1914. When the park was created in 1933, it was likely very far from the rest of the city. The city has now developed up to the parkland. So the City of Fort Worth was certainly looking into future land use, and for that we can be grateful. The park has a large grassy area and picnic tables. So it's a good place for families and groups. Lake Worth is slightly hidden behind the trees. However, the big draw for Marion Sansom Park is the trails. There are several miles you can ride your mountain bike on, and although the signs say "no hikers", I'd think that only the yahoos would object to your presence. A short walk down the hill brings you to a hundred year old pavilion with a better view of Lake Worth. Hike or bike more, and you come to a short wide waterfall that is most likely manmade. Most of the land is covered with oak trees. As a former native Californian who remains relieved to have left that failing state, these trails remind me of many of the East Bay Regional Parks, specifically Carquinez Straits and Morgan Territory. You can find similar landscape in SoCal's San Gabriel Mountains. Like those forests, Marion Sansom preserves this land the way it was, a very short distance from civilization. Although it appears that this park gets a lot of love, this love has not resulted in a lot of vandalism. Truly unlike SoCal. People here just want to enjoy the land in its natural state, get exercise, and have an enjoyable experience. In short, Marion Sansom Park is a convenient place to get outside and have a little fun.

Great spot on the east side of Lake Worth for sunset views…read more On a first visit in mid-June 2020, music was playing, several large families were gathered for birthdays/cookouts (6 feet between groups), about 15 kids and 7 young adults were swimming-many with inflatable rafts/tubes. The small parking lot was packed and a few cars were parked in the street nearby - maneuvering in and out was tight. While the views were nice, the amount of trash overflowing trash bins and strewn across grass and trails created an unsavory impression--unsure whether trash is often neglected at this park or if it is due to decreased trash pick-up due to COVID-19. Additionally, the one (and only) large port-a-John situated by the parking lot and main park trail emitted a pungent odor which could not be avoided from several feet away...I was wishing for some flowers to stick my face in after! Based on the first visit and distance from home, this isn't a park I'll eagerly return to or recommend to friends though I'd be interested in visiting post-COVID to see if it's any less crowded and better maintained.

However it is fine to just go out grill up some meat, and swim in the lake, usually doesn't get busy till around noon or so, at least on Saturdays.

There's a limited amount of parking spaces. I encourage you to carpull, if you can. Water fountains are available for you and your dog. There's also an airpump station. It's really busy in the evening with families. There's a mixture of everything. Walkers, bikers and kids. The paths are pretty wide with uphill and downhill slopes. Depending on the route you take. It can lead you to a shopping and dinning experience. Theres two things I disliked about this area. Number one, there's lots of tiny gnats around that makes it uncomfortable. Number two, There was a horse poo on the side walk. I'm glad I got to venture out and enjoy the scenary. This area is nice for photography. I hope the next time I go the gnats and poo are gone.

I'm being so descriptive because google maps, waze, nor Siri herself was helpful in getting us here. You'd think as many times as I've been to the Whole Foods (at waterside development), I would have noticed it, but alas I did not. LOL! There's a decent sized parking lot here. If you are going to walk/bike/hike out far, you should download the free Trinity Trails app. It will help a lot with navigation and letting you know about the terrains of different parts of the trail. It was an absolutely gorgeous day when we were out. Surprisingly, this part of the trail was not packed. The few folks that were out were very friendly. I love it when "trail folk" acknowledge each other with friendly smiles and chitty chat. Almost everyone we came across had a cute dog on a leash. Folks out here were actually respecting leash laws. Presently, there is no shade along this part of the shade. That wasn't a problem this day because the weather is still cool, but I can definitely see it being an issue when our "beloved" Texas summer is in full swing. It's pretty cool that you can walk along this part of the trail and then head over to waterside for some food (there are some restaurants there besides the grocery store). See you on the trails!
