Do yourself a favor and find another plumber. My experience with this company was beyond frustrating and felt completely unethical. I had a frozen pipe emergency during freezing weather with no heat in the house. They came out, charged me $300, and didn't even provide a proper diagnosis. I was told it "might be" a broken circulator -- no certainty, no testing, just speculation. Meanwhile, they created a dripping valve, and they didn't even bother to tighten it despite my requesr. They said they would send an estimate and never did -- not for two days -- while we were literally shivering in the cold. When I finally followed up, they sent a $2,100 estimate to replace the circulator and fix the valve. Thankfully, I decided to call another plumber. Within 20 minutes, the frozen pipe was fixed with much cheaper. I was told there was absolutely nothing wrong with the circulator or the valve. The dripping valve? Tightened in a few second. I paid $300 for guesswork, delay, and unnecessary upselling during an emergency situation. This felt like an attempt to take advantage of a homeowner in distress. Good technicians. Totally exploitative on the billing side. Only for the wealthy. We had to pay almost $2,000 to fix a tiny thing because, cunningly, they've figured out they can rake in much more money by charging separately for every "step." These "steps," mind you, used to be considered part of "doing the job," but are now billed separately by this company, which apparently has been taken over by a private equity firm, which explains it. For each "step," they shove an iPad in your face and demand your signature: Eg: --driving to your home (in this case, about 10 miles from Woburn): about $300 --diagnosing the problem: $600 --driving to get the necessary spare part (about 5 miles and back), which was so basic they should have had it on the truck: about $250 --cost of spare part: $200 --installing the spare part, which took about 30 minutes: $600 Interestingly, when we received the bill, it did NOT itemize these charges in terms of the dollar amount for each, instead it listed by units (eg "1:00 troubleshooting," "1:00 parts pickup"). We will never use this company again. Even though it was the company that installed the system, for which we paid 28K just a few years ago (no longer under their 2-year warranty). This maintenance visit showed that they're clearly more interested in making bank than actually building customer loyalty. Companies are entitled to make money. This is something else altogether. We never write reviews, but hope this one will serve as a warning to people needing HVAC services but unable to afford truly exploitative upcharging. read more

I agreed to a one year maintenance plan. The furnace was checked and maintenance performed in mid December 2014. In mid January, I discovered a leak and 1-2 inches water in the basement near the furnace. I was about to leave on a cruise and was shocked that this was occurring. This is what maintenance should resolve. Thankfully they sent a repairman the next day. $1100 later the humidifier issue was resolved with a new pipe. This issue should have been seen at the maintenance in December. Very disappointing. read more

Update: In their expected to attempt to bolster their ratings, Central tries to hand wave their double-charging away, but they're still charging you separately for a contractually included service for the PRIVILEGE of being on their service plan. If they truly believed they needed to run a test to certify a system to be worthy of their plan, they should be happy to waive that test fee that would normally have been included once the systems are found to be just fine. The sheer hubris of this approach of charging you separately for a listed contracted service as a price of entry is why you need to avoid these people. It's clearly designed as a "lock in penalty". They have new computer and sales systems (servicetitan) that they don't seem to fully understand that appears to be focused on upselling you on service contracts and unnecessary add-ons like surge protectors and other things you can easily do yourself like replacing the media in your condensate trap. I feel like I'm paying just as much for their back office operations as I am for the actual service technicians. The service technicians seem well trained and appear to know what they're doing with plenty of experience, but when they're attached to this company I cannot recommend them. Here's a clear concrete example where the business practices are unreasonable: in order to start a service contract with them they want you to pay for a combustion test even though the combustion test is included in the contract. The "logic" here is that they want you to get a combustion test to make sure everything is OK before they put you on a contract. However this doesn't make any sense : even if the system were not OK the contract would not expose them to any liability as it's just for regular maintenance. They would charge you repair fees for anything that was wrong anyways. This is a clear example of double charging with a hand waving excuse as to why , and couldn't get them to refund it ... so I cancelled my contract and walked . Unless you value the convenience regardless of actual cost to your wallet, you should do the same .. they clearly structure these recurring revenue prepayment plans not for your benefit but for theirs. The price for the plan changed several times over the course of going back-and-forth with them and the story never seemed quite right. It just felt all kinds of wrong , like I was getting screwed but I couldn't put my finger on why. My A/C was not working -- the Nest thermostat was triggering heat, not cool air so I called to schedule service because they were recommended by a neighbor and I see them frequently in my neighborhood in Malden. They charge a very high dispatch fee ($169) and then a "trouble shooting fee" which is between $100-500 dollars. In my case $450. It's unclear how they calculate. None of this includes any work and was very confusing (and I'll be honest that as a new homeowner I didn't know that this was not how it should work). I should have shopped around because other quotes I got were ~$89 to $200 for the dispatch fee which includes a diagnoses. The technician, Aleksander, was nice, but spent the entire time on the phone with someone that I assume is a supervisor. After about 40 minutes of tinkering he confirmed that is was an issue with the thermostat and quoted be another $650 to replace it. I declined and opted to replace it myself because I can't justify $1200 to replace a thermostat. read more

We had a terrific experience with Central Heating & Cooling. They just installed a new hybrid heating and cooling system - replacing a 20 year old gas fired furnace, and adding a heat pump for heating & cooling. Hans and Rafael headed up an HVAC and Electrical team that replaced basement equipment, and added Heat Pump and return air ductwork through two floors to install our first central cooling system. (Goodbye window AC units) We can't say enough good things about the installation team - professional, polite, neat - they did a all the work in less than two days. It's a cold December day, and they finished the changeover in only 4 hours of downtime from heating. We have an old Victorian and need the capacity of the gas furnace when it gets really cold, the heat pump supplies necessary heat typically. System is running without missing a beat. Last week Central Cooling and Heating charged us $509.08 to replace a furnace ignitor that required about 45 minutes to install. I checked several plumbing supply Web sites and the retail cost of the Lochinvar ignitor (part 100165929) is between $29 and $56. Central Cooling and Heating has serviced our furnace for over 15 years and we trusted them - their charges were fair. Since this ugly incident I learned their company was bought by private equity (Sila Services) focused on home burner maintenance in 2023 which explains our experience. When I called Central Cooling to question why this repair cost $509 the customer service person told me that they had accidentally overcharged us $162.92 due to a computer glitch. While we spoke she corrected the charge to $346.16. Had I not called to question the price of this simple repair we would have paid the $509.08. I checked several plumbing supply Web sites and the retail cost of the Lochinvar ignitor is between $29 and $56. This means the hourly charge for the technician (who was already in our home) was over $300/hr. This is gouging which is why I need to write this review. I felt pressured to authorize the work because the repairman was here and we need a functioning furnace in the winter. Heating is an essential service and we don't know anything about burner repair. I feel very disillusioned by this company and taken advantage of. I just read the contract they sent us for the $340 we paid for a tuneup and "right to call them". Within the Terms and Condition it says that the ignition system is covered under the contract. Their customer service rep told me that with our "Silver Service" this is not the case. I was told that my town was no longer in their service area so I called another vendor. A rep from Central Cooling and Heating called me today offering a 25% discount on service and I had to tell her that her company doesn't service my area which she confirmed with her boss was true. so the company doesn't even educate their employees on the area they cover. They schedule you in a 4 hour window, make you wait around. Show up late and refuse to see that they have to do a better job than that for their customers. Our HVAC main zone was running but not throing cool air. had no clue and as such called them. The guy spent sometime on the circuit board and found nothing. Mentioned that he will have to charge another 108$ to chek the thermostat. I insisted that he should check the outside compressor as the thermostat was running. without even checking he opened the thermostat and in 2 minutes went outside to check the compressor. Now he mentions that he will need to charge another 400$ to replace the 12v relay. was not feeling good about the way he was operating. checked the price and it was 12$ homedepot. Asked hime to leave immediately. I replaced it myself and then diagonized the issue to be with the thermostat wiring. I replaced that myself and it works as expected. The technician arrived, spent 20 minutes, told us we had a furnace crack turned out unit off and left. The next day I received an invoice for $4000 for a replacement. I subsequently had two smaller companies come in, both did deep checks and could not find a crack. Both companies that came after central cooling told us we were being taken advantage of. Terrible service from a company that supposedly had great Google reviews. I called them in because I had a chemical type smell in furnace condensate drain line. Barely 2 hours of investigation - $700. Recommendation from tech: get a new drain pipe. That will be another $700 please. He didn't do any combustion tests. He didn't tell me why it smelled the way it smelled. Needless to say, I didn't take up his offer Called another HVAC company. Comes in, does a combustion test, sees CO is off the charts. Checks the pressure regulator at furnace and sees that the pressure is off. Too much fuel was being dumped into the system and that smell was the unburnt fuel trickling down into my drain pipe. Central installed our 2 HVAC systems and has serviced them over the years. We recently had a unit go out and called Central for a repair. We were advised that there was a dispatch fee (cost to drive to our house), and there would be a diagnostic fee followed by an estimate and that they may or may not have parts readily available. The tech came by and diagnosed the system. He seemed very competent and was able to identify the issue as a leak in the air handler evaporator coil. He had already told us that there would be a (costly) diagnostic & coolant fee and then provided a preliminary estimated range of cost to replace the coil. However, since the system is 18 years old, he noted that Central recommends replacing the whole AC (and the second AC system). He called his sales manager who wanted to schedule a visit to price out installation of both AC systems. We told him that we were only interested in the repair at this time. The next day we got the proposal for the coil replacement. The cost was 4x the lower end of the preliminary estimate (and about 3x the higher end of the estimate range) and about half the cost of the low end of the range mentioned for a completely new system installation (condenser and air handling unit). We reached out to a smaller shop who priced out the required part and provided a proposal to replace the coil with a cost that was pretty close to the preliminary estimate that we had received from the Central tech. They came and did a great job replacing the coil and the unit is operating well. We also learned that their diagnostic fee was a fraction of what we paid Central to troubleshoot the repair. I can only infer that Central is not interested in repairing older systems, but prices repair jobs in such a way that forces clients to either purchase entirely new systems or go elsewhere. Clients should be notified of this approach when calling for service on older systems. Note that I provided a draft of this review to Central prior to posting. Their GM responded that all pricing comes from a standard price book and they are generally more expensive than smaller providers but provide more expertise, experience, design ability... This may be true, but it doesn't justify charging four times the cost for basic repairs. We are giving a two-star rating, rather than one-star, because we have received good service in the past. read more

We have been using Central Cooling and Heating for over six years. So when we decided it was time to replace our heat pump, we contacted them and met with Kevin, one of their sales representatives. Kevin met with us and reviewed several brands and models of heat pumps and helped us decide which one would best meet our needs and our budget. We ultimately decided to purchase a model produced by Daikin. Kevin arranged to have one of Central Cooling's employees come to review our current installation and then arranged for a team to come to our property to install the new heat pump. They arrived at 7:30 in the morning and stayed all day until the job was completed and until they were satisfied that it was working correctly. One of the team members then showed us how to work the thermostat. I would add that we have now had the heat pump in place for about two weeks and found that it provided more even heating throughout the house than our old heat pump, especially in our bedroom, which previously ran a bit cooler than other rooms. We appreciated the professionalism of both Kevin and the Central Cooling team members who did the removal of the old and installation of the new heat pump. read more

This company is a train wreck. After purchasing a house, I renewed the contract with this awful company that the prior owners had used. Their business model is to try to aggressively upsell you on expensive equipment that is easy to install so that they can pad their bottom line. When there is an issue that their technicians cannot understand or are not licensed to do work on, rather than explain that they are not familiar with it or are not licensed in it, they send out the salesman to sell you equipment you may or may not need. The house I bought had a lot of HVAC problems. I do not minimize that. And a lot of the problems involved the ductwork. But not one person from this travesty of a company even explored the ductwork or what might have been going on. The solution - buy new equipment. New equipment doesn't solve ductwork though. But since they are likely not licensed or not motivated to look into the problems when they can just have me purchase a new system, why would they make an effort? The low point for me with this atrocious company came when my air conditioner had stopped working due to a freon leak the week before a heat wave. I had an employee come out to look at it, and he was adamant that I should not waste any money putting in freon in a leaky system. In fact, he was in his truck prepared to drive away, leaving me with a system that was not cooling the house. Now why would the solution be to leave me without a working system? So I could buy a much more expensive system out of desperation, of course! Thankfully I ran outside before he left and told him to add some freon, which kept the system running long enough to get through the heat wave. I want to give the good workers their due. This disastrous company has some diligent workers whom I have had some great conversations with and who have actually tuned up my system or given me helpful advice. But I believe that is because they happen to be upstanding people. The business model of this dreadful company is to sell expensive equipment and sell it quickly. The other companies I have used recently are not like that. They explain what is needed in a thoughtful way, and no company worth its salt would ever leave a home without a working system. It defies belief that they would attempt to do that. The coda to the story is that I did end up needing new equipment. But it wasn't just new equipment. It was new ductwork as well. And I chose to use a company that I have a lot more respect for, where they explain different options and talk through how to solve problems rather than continue to insult your system and tell you that you need to spend big money instantly. Steer clear of this ripoff of a company. You will not regret it. read more

BEWARE! They will book appointments for work they apparently "don't do" and won't even show up the day of the appointment, instead calling to say they aren't coming with zero notice. We booked an appointment weeks in advance for work that I was assured could be completed (an issue with servicing our AC unit). Weeks go by and the appointment day finally comes, then 15 min after the appointment start window I get a call from the serviceman saying that he doesn't "do the kind of work" we needed. It's infuriating that this didn't happen weeks beforehand, especially because he apparently didn't even need to see our unit to know he couldn't do the work (he never set foot on our property). Companies should know what they are capable of, and not book appointments for work they can't do. Is this really too much to ask? Central Cooling installed our system 5 years ago. We have had issues with this system ever since. Every time they come out, they charged us $169.00 service charge. Mind you, they have never found the cause. We paid over $500.00 so they could consult the manufacturer. Shouldn't they know the system they installed? Shouldn't their techs be educated on the systems they installed? Why do customers have to pay for the expensive consultation when Central Cooling should have educated their techs. It's like in the hospital, we buy buy new equipment and we send our staff to be educated on the system. If there is an issue, we call the manufacturer and it is not charged to us. But, Central Cooling charges their customers for their lack of knowledge. Our HVAC system still has issues. We decided to call Dry Air Systems. They immediately came out and found the issue. They are educated on this system. They did not call the manufacturer. They did not charge me for the service call on top of the fee to fix the problem. They gave me excellent service and they did not charge me what Central Cooling proposed to fix an issue they could not find. Central Cooling wanted to replace the 5 year old system. WARNING!! This company takes advantage of it's customers by significantly overcharging them. We were in a bind and needed to have R410a refrigerant added to our Mitsubishi heat pump system. They quoted a price per pound, which we trusted was the market price, and agreed to have it installed. We were in a bind. We're not refrigerant experts. A couple weeks later we were speaking with someone who told us we were significantly overcharged, by about 125%! We called a couple companies and sure enough, the price we paid - $235/lb (for 9 lbs) was WAY more than what other companies charge, which was between $100-115/lb, including labor. To make matters worse we also paid a service fee on top of the refrigerant. When we called Central to make them aware of the price discrepancy and ask why they charge so much more, their response was "because we're a bigger company and we have a lot of overhead". It's hard to argue this is anything but price gouging, simply put. The large majority of people have no idea of the cost of materials for things like refrigerant. We put trust in companies to be honest and fair. Discovering that Central's pricing was anything but was a lesson learned. We fell victim but hopefully you will not. My Advice: Shop around. There are other companies in the Boston area that are a much better value. I can even recommend vendors that I have since found to be much less expensive. read more

It cost $159 dollars for them to pull in my driveway. After a couple of minutes they explained that it was $400 dollars more to troubleshoot the problem. The lead technician told me it was about $2000 to recharge my system. He said that they would have to leak check for another $700 but they recommend a new system. I sent them on their way after writing a check for almost 600 and saw they had broken my attic stairs .2 hours later a friend of my sons came over and recharged and serviced the system . I've used Central Cooling & Heating for annual maintenance and insulation work. They're fantastic! When you call, you always get a human being at the central office, and they're polite and responsive. The technicians show up promptly, do great work, and keep your home clean by wearing protective covers over their work boots (seriously, it's a small thing but it makes a world of difference to me). The annual service contracts are very reasonable, and contract customers get priority, which is awesome. You can't plan emergencies, but you can plan on setting up a contract! For twice-annual tuneups on our HVAC equipment, Luis and David have both been fantastic, giving good advice and making sure our systems (installed by another, less responsive company we no longer bother with) are in good order. I only wish we'd had them install our equipment in the first place. For insulation work, Corey and team were great about assessing our home, providing recommendations, and working on the fly when it turned out some of our walls already had insulation. These folks are easy to get ahold of, easy to work with, and unfailingly polite and awesome at their work. I can't say enough great things about them. read more

Central responded quickly, but were unable to diagnose the problem. They came back with an electrician and then sent me a proposal for $6,000 for the repair of the warm air furnace, or $13,000 for its replacement. The replacement unit, if bought on line, would cost about $1500 delivered to the door. These proposals seemed way too high. When I came home the next week I inspected and diagnosed the problem with the furnace. I replaced one part, the inducer, at a cost of less than $400. Problem resolved. They charged me $642 for their effort--accomplishing nothing except the preparation of two outrageously high proposals for unnecessary work. If I could give this company negative stars, I would. Every bad thing you read in these reviews is true (I only wish I'd seen these reviews first). We had a technician come to our house last week to fix an issue with the furnace. After 3 hours, the issue was not resolved, the technician couldn't tell us the problem (said he would have to check with his manager), and we were charged $800 anyway! Two days later, we had another company come look at the furnace, and they fixed it in less than one hour, explained what the problem was calmly and professionally, and charged us $200. When I contacted Central Cooling to ask for partial reimbursement, I was asked to supply an invoice from the second company. They are always on time. Just like his colleagues, John left a clean place. Additionally, over the years I also had a few emergencies and each was resolved efficiently. He showed up the very next day to access the situation and with quick a turn around provided me with a plan and estimate. Although I had other options from other qualified companies, I decided to go with Central C & H because they were now invested in getting me to change my review and improve customer relations. The installed the unit works fine (although they forgot the promised pads initially which Rich just installed himself yesterday). I received help with the Mass Save process and associated rebates. Price wise they were in line with the other proposals I received. The HVAC unit was expensive, made more so by my city location. But as the saying goes, you can't take it with you. read more

I have been a customer since 2005. In 2012, at their recommendation, I replaced my entire heating system. Last month the furnace stopped working. The repairman found that the some board was fried and that 2 other parts should be replaced at the same time. The cost to me would be $4,000, and, if I wanted it repaired that day, I would have to pay an additional $600 for the repairman to go and get the parts. I called another local heating company, who contacted the manufacturer of the unit and found that the furnace was still under warrant. They did the repair for the cost of a service call and labor, $400. Seems like I was being taken advantage of or ripped off. read more
