We needed to get to the airport before our flight left, so we called Yellow Cab instead. I don't recall our driver's name, but I know what he looks like. He wears an old-fashioned Yellow Cab hat (like this one: http://www.johnhelmer.com/prod.itml/icOid/174) and a black leather vest, has a white beard, and tattoos on his arms. Friendly, nice, professional--he was great. If I ever need a cab again, he's my driver. UPDATE: I hear tell his name is Rickey. (And for the record, Nic sweetest, I don't moonlight as a cabbie.)

While staying at the Monterey Hotel, my boyfriend and I decided that in order to save walking time,…read morewe would use a taxi service to take us to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The concierge at our hotel called this cab service for us. While I waited for my boyfriend to park his vehicle at the public parking lot about a block away, thinking that by the time he got back to me the taxi would appear. We didn't anticipate such a timely arrival for the cab. I was waiting by the curb when our taxi showed up. Now I was feeling more than embarrassed and kept apologizing for causing the driver to wait for my boyfriend to return. But our driver Michael Patterson didn't seem annoyed at us, (although somewhat quiet). Thankfully, my boyfriend came back after about a 5 minute wait. We piled in and directed him to take us to the aquarium. The ice finally broke when Michael jokingly asked "is that place still open?" We had a good laugh and continued with some small talk. During the short trip, our driver began pointing out places of interest, restaurants and bars. We felt very comfortable by the end of this journey and gave him a well deserved Yelp recommended tip!

Many are very good with people as well-- not just decent taxi drivers. The The dispatchers seldom seem to know where anything is. The dispatcher seem to work against the drivers, they seem to know very very little about much of the peninsula and area, which leads to a lot of distress for the drivers. It's a wonder anybody gets anywhere at all. Then there are the drivers who put everyone at risk: the ones who text while speeding, the ones who drive hands-free, the ones to scream and shout, the ones with foul language, the ones who are sexually inappropriate, the ones who are despicable in their language about different ethnic races. And do just about any dangerous thing they choose. The ones who are deceptive (who cheat lie) who are functioning is hustlers (and getting away with it) because there's no checks and balances until the worst happens. And it does.... And there are the bafoons; the ones who claim they got a "raw deal in life" and so tread on others (pardon the pun) because they've failed at pretty much everything in life (and resent good and contributing citizens)-: jokers very much like the crazy character in the film Conspiracy Theory-- with every delusional conspiracy against them they can recite. As a passenger one realizes why they are filthy, "dressed for depressed" with cars so dilapidated it's hard to imagine they pass any safety tests. What is worse, they diminish the good drivers, they diminish the driver who show up on time, they diminish the drivers you can count on, they diminish the drivers are good and honest, they diminish the drivers you can trust. because there are many. And like anything else, it only takes a few bad apples to rot a bunch; as if the core is bad. The need of Uber or other business to come along is timely. Because to degrade and diminish the very people who pay their bills (the good citizens of this community both young and old) and the good people who rely on them for transportation: to think some drivers feel so little of themselves that the best they can do is drive around degrading and diminishing passengers by any means necessary, whether it's taking good people on $100 rides that are really $20 (tourists), taking good local people on $15 rides that they then charge $45 for; it's a hustle, and con. The tragedy of these poor low life characters is they are functionally preying on people (because again, somehow life "did them wrong") so they're driving around in the wild wild West with the low morality and lesser compunction about consequences. And all this into city known as "ground zero for overfishing"- these "land sharks" know no bottom. And the very good and reliable drivers are left scrambling, functioning with dignity, and doing the best they can (and working the job with self-respect and respect for their passengers) but these seem few. It would be wonderful to see a smaller taxi company with a handful of really really truly competent and capable drivers, who treated their customer and their passenger with the kind of respect and dignity that is commendable. Sure it's a drag to have to pick up drunks because too much alcohol is poured too often. But to be a taxi driver and deliberately do your worst (rather than your best) why that just says everything about character, unfortunately it doesn't say anything very good about it. Sad and tragic individuals who are bringing they coworkers down. The worst of the worst do the worst. The best of the best, shine.

Nope. Can't do it…read more When we moved here, we didn't have a car, and, not knowing any better, used Central Coast Cab when we needed a lift. It was OK. Fast forward a couple of years. We have a car, but didn't want to leave it long-term at the Monterey Airport. So, we called a day in advance, asking them to come get us the next morning. The next morning came, but the cab didn't. When it didn't show after 15 minutes, we called Yellow Cab instead. They had a taxi at our door in about 5 minutes. Never did see the cab we supposedly reserved. They'll never see us in one of their taxis again.

You'd try to get a taxi in a crowded place like Las Vegas or Milan and wait in line for hours. Some taxi services had the worst cars ever, with no AC and pretty crazy aggressive drivers. We needed something better. Then... Uber came along! The drivers are unique individuals making their way through life. Their stories, if they care to share them, can be epic, shocking and/or inspiring! It's not a panacea but it certainly changed the transportation industry and helped many people with cars, get some income flowing on their own schedule. I could tell you some crazy and/or fun uber stories but I will leave that for another day! Life is good with Uber.
