Unilab's motto "Low Cost Blood Tests" rings true but goes way beyond this. This is the first and…read moreonly lab you'll ever need to go to in the greater Chicagoland area...forget about those expensive lab bills that you get slammed with through your doctor's office. You can bring any of your clinical needs to Unilab and you'll get fast, efficient results done by dedicated staff. You don't even need a doctor's prescription to get tests done here...just come into the office with any recommended doctor's tests. Here's a quick summary: 1. You visit your doctor and he/she recommends that you get x, y, z lab tests done OR you yourself just want to get your own tests done out of curiosity like get your cholesterol levels checked or a CBC done. 2. Come in with your lab recommendations, and the friendly, licensed phlebotomists will do a blood test for you right there at the lab. 3. Test results are sent to you via email within 24-72 hours, depending on what the tests are. The office is a bit tucked away and hard to find the first time...park at a meter anywhere you can near the corner of Austin & Lake, and walk to the door that's directly across from Church's (try your best to ignore that tempting and at the same time disgusting smell of grease) and next door to Unity drugstore.

I needed IgG titers ASAP to meet a work requirement and they ensured me they would be ready Monday (I came in on a Wednesday). I confirmed this multiple times before I signed any documents or paid. However, when I called on Monday the man who answered was extremely rude when I asked what the hold up was. If the labs weren't ready that is understandable but he could have easily owned up to the fact and apologized, instead he yelled at me and proceeded to hang up on me, all without allowing me to get a word in otherwise. Honestly, if I hadn't had this unfortunate exchange with this man I would've given them 4 stars and moved on but you can't be in a business like this not have basic customer service skills and phone manners.

Do not take your elderly relatives here. This has been a…read moreterrible experience. The clinic lacks accountability at every level--from management to clinical staff. I filed a complaint and submitted an incident report after a provider sent the wrong medication to my mother. To this day, no one has reached out to us. We're still waiting for the practice manager, Raul Martinez, and Alejandra to contact us. What's worse, my mother's insulin prescription was never sent. Because of that, I had to take her to the emergency room. Instead of insulin, the clinic sent antibiotics--something I reported immediately. I called multiple times and filed complaints, but no one from management has followed up. It's hard to believe they claim to care for elderly patients when they clearly show no concern for their health or safety. How can providers leave office visits unsigned, prescriptions unsigned, and no one seems to know anything about it? Elderly patients often have chronic health issues that require real, attentive care--and sadly, Oak Street Health is not the place for that.

I researched how to get there, as some have complained they could not find it. I walked into the building, and the security staff told me to go to floor 15. I walked into the office and checked in at the kiosk answering a few simple questions. I get a bit uneasy about having my blood drawn, but Tiffany was wonderful. She had such a calm and reassuring voice. She told me everything that that we would be doing and took extra care as she drew my blood. Before I knew it, it was done. Tiffany made sure I was feeling okay before letting me know how and when I should expect my results. She was really fantastic! I had a great experience here and recommend it. For peace of mind, do a basic search of the address so you can get familiar with where you are going. It helped for me. :)

I was in-and-out pretty quickly and there was only a few people waiting then. Don't come here unless you have an appointment.

I wonder if there are any toxic nasty bits that will get into my lungs/blood/brain and kill me... How do I find that out?" The internet presented several options; just risk it and probably die, get a kit from a big box store and mail samples across the country and get results in like months, hire crazy expensive experts who oh-by-the-way also happen to be experts in the removal of toxic nasty bits for thousands and thousands of dollars (yeah, no conflict-of-interest there...), or after pages and pages of search results, do the right thing: find a local, independent, NIST-accredited lab that only runs tests and doesn't try to sell you a dang thing. Score. The NIST website said there are a handful of such labs in the area. I even called a few of them. I went with MTL because they were super nice to me when I called. They answered all of my questions. They made sure I wasn't going to do anything stupid like rip out a chunk of wall without a mask just to get a sample. They gave me a great quote over the phone. When asked how soon I needed results, I straight up guessed, "Umm, like a week?" to which they responded, 'Pff, yeah, we'll have these in 24 hours." OK. Cool. Here's where it got really good. I collect my samples, zip down the highway, find the place without getting lost once, and land free street parking just down the block. They buzz me in the door and say, "Oh, hi, you must be the guy who called. Show us what you've got." To be certain that everything was in order, they ran my samples back to the lab right then and there and came back two minutes later and said they could work with everything. I fill out the form, cut them a check for exactly what they quoted, and I'm gone. In and out in ten minutes tops. It'll be five next time when I know what I'm doing. Flash forward six hours, my phone dings and the report is in my inbox. Same day processing. The report is easy to read and comprehend. It had a little glossary that explained the terminology. I geeked out over this part, in addition to testing for toxic nasty bits, the report gives percentages of the other materials in the composition of my samples. Neat! I wasn't expecting that. All in all, absolutely every aspect of this process clicked into place and I was delightfully surprised by how easy it was. If you are remodeling an old house, there is no reason not to run these tests. I will definitely come back to MTL the next time we undertake a remodeling project.
