Great food (seafood chowder and Guinness stew were awesome) and good service. The two front sections get really full early and are mainly for drinking only. So they'll ask if you are eating or just drinking. Eating? They'll sit you in the quieter back section. The back is romantically lit with candles and has a farm/rustic feel. We came in to have a few drinks and eat dinner. I asked the waitress if I could taste some beers so we could decide which we wanted to buy. She became very quiet and unhelpful after this. We approached the bar and our waitress rushed to the bartenders and whispered something to them about us. The bartenders helped us sample a couple beers and we bought a couple pints. We asked the bartender what the problem with us sampling a few beers was and we received a very smart ass "This is a business after all" response and that " we can't let people just get samples all day", which we didn't do! Every single local person I asked, and I asked a lot of people, recommended The Celt as the must-eat place while in Dublin. The restaurant isn't on the main drag of Temple St where tourists often frequent but it is still within a reasonable distance. The pub has a local feel, a great local beer selection, and seriously delicious food. They have suggested beer pairing for every item on their menu, which I thought was excellent. I had the Dublin Blue beer and it was my favorite beer of the entire trip to Ireland. I ended up ordering the Bacon and Cabbage. It's a boat load of delicious buttery mashed potatoes topped with a thick slab of pork (think corned beef but pork) with cabbage and a creamy flavorful white gravy sauce. I still dream of this dish and any time I talk to someone who's going to Ireland, I tell them about this restaurant and this dish in particular. It is amazingly delicious and I'm drooling uncontrollably onto my keyboard as I write this review... The service is friendly and prompt. By far the best pub we visited during our trip to Dublin. Tons of Irish pubs across the river are total tourist traps - the generic "Irish Pub" we all know because you can it find in every city in the world. The Celt isn't that. It's a legitimate traditional Irish pub, with excellent food, friendly service, and good company. The kind of place where locals actually go (as well as a healthy, but not burdensome, number of tourists). They advertise live Irish music every night which is pretty great. This little gem is hidden among the array of discount stores, internet cafes and crooked supermarkets that give Talbot Street its decidedly dodgy feel. Not the greatest area for a night out on the town, but you will have a pleasant enough evening if you stick to this pub. The Celt is a typical oldies pub, and if it's a quaint evening of drink, trad music and interesting conversation you're after, then you've come to the right place. The locals really deliver on the friendliness factor, and more often than not you're greeted as you walk in the door. Some of the guys that frequent the Celt are considered local heroes, legends even. Get chatting to one of them and you'll see why... conversations swirl about like something from a Lewis Carroll novel, and afterwards you can't really be sure how exactly you got to be talking about boomerangs, a woman's job prospects in the construction industry and Paddy's deliciously x-rated past (Paddy is about 97, by the way). The live music adds to the relaxed atmosphere, and everyone stops to listen (and sing along to) classics such as 'Dirty Old Town', 'Galway Girl' and newer Irish tunes like 'One'. Foodwise, The Celt serves up a fairly decent version of Irish fodder. The Bacon and Cabbage is a must, and the stews are great too. Shoe-string fries are served in ample portions (don't try to go it alone!!) While you're there, make sure to have a look at the budgies down the end of the bar - hilarious! Friendly service, good beer, and the 13 euro Fish N Chips was very good, but after eating this famous dish at other venues, this was a wee bit pricey for the portion size. Came across this pub on our last night in Dublin, which was both unfortunate and a wonderful way to conclude our trip. There was a pickup session happening only around 6 or 7, which was really nice; we had been looking for live music and happened to stumble right upon it. The food was amazing. I had the soup of the day, which was, I believe, a radish and leek soup? Whatever it was, it was absolutely amazing. It came with a side of the most delicious brown bread I've ever had, that I even asked for an extra piece (and received it free of charge!) I especially love that their soup of the day is almost always dairy free and vegetable-based. The ambience was cozy and one could clearly see that the place has history. What seems like a run of the mill pub is actually your living room, it's just in-disguise. At least, it feels that way when your in there. This, right here, is one of the reasons I love Ireland so much. You can walk into a pub and feel like you're relaxing at home. Friendly, chatty people or not, if you look like you don't want to chat then people leave you alone. A nice cold drink, some food if you want (Will have to try that next time. Was brought here by the people I first stayed with in Dublin and when we arrived there was Gaelic Football on the TV, or was it Hurling ... not sure ... didn't really know either sport existed when I entered The Celt to have my first-ever "pour" of Guinness on Irish soil. Centrally located pub on Talbot Street with lots of locals, a few tourists, a bunch of musical acts from time to time and some friendly bartenders. This is by far the best bar I've been to in Dublin! My friend and I visited Dublin from CA for St. Patty's day, but soon realized that every young spring breaker who was studying abroad had the same idea as us. Since we're a little older than the average college student, we started asking locals what their favorite bar was. The answer was almost always the Celt. We went on our first night and immediately fell in love. They have live music playing and everyone in there was so nice. They have a nice outside smoking area and back room that you can sit at, it really has more space than we initially thought. This is one of those places that I go into on my way to the bus on the random sat night. I like my trad.... And I will find it hard to walk past a pub that has a trad session playing - unless the bouncer stops me. The Celt on a sat night is by far a trad session, the woman who is in control may or may not be able to sing some songs, but the other musicians can cover her. So I was in there last sat night and it was full of French people .... Not bein racist... but it was, full of French ppl that is. The reason I say it is because The Celt is usually full of Americans... No harm they're there to have fun. So I decided to ask the French people I ended up sitting beside why they had chosen The Celt (you have to take it that the Celt is in the hostel belt that is Gardiner Street, and these weren't really the hosteling age). 'Recommended' was the answer from the few groups I asked. Other people back in France had recommended The Celt as a place to go if they were staying in Dublin. Can you get any better a review than that? (It was for the music) Anyway, in the middle of writing this review on my iPad I happened to go into the Celt tonight, a Thurs ( after a great Yelp event) and it was still popular with the tourists. As I look back fondly of my memories of Ireland, I can confidently say this was the highlight of my trip. We actually stumbled into this place on St. Patrick's Day, only because it started raining as we were walking down the street. It was pretty packed and we weren't sure if we were gonna fit, but the place is actually huge. The front, which looks like a nice traditional pub, was packed. Despite that, it wasn't too difficult to get a beer and they were pretty reasonably priced. We walked to the outside looking for a place to sit or at least stand. That area was full of smokers, though it was covered. Behind that is another room with live music. We snuck in while the band took a break, so people were shuffling around. I find it kind of interesting that people say this place is always full of tourists because on that day, we felt like the only ones in there that were not Irish. We could tell because there were a few folk songs that everyone in the room knew but us. The place was full of entire Irish families, old and young, singing and dancing. The dads and grandmothers were straight up schooling everybody on the art of jig dancing. I could have spent all night in there. read more

Walking down Talbot Street, stumbling into this pub was one of the best "happy accidents" that occurred, while in Dublin. Sure, enjoying the Guinness and hard cider flowing from the taps was a bonus, but the live entertainment pushed me over the edge! Two regulars from Dublin and two friends visiting who now live in Brussels. I thought I died and was in music heaven. I could not help, but tap my feet and wanted to twirl until dawn! The staff take their jobs extremely seriously and make sure there is no riff-raff in the pub. There was an obnoxious drunk who was disrupting the awesome evening; and the next thing I knew, one of the employees came out from back of the bar and escorted him out effortlessly. I finally got to the Celt Pub - after a friend of mine was talking about it and their trad session on a Saturday and Sunday for a long time. I actually wouldn't have expected a trad session in Dublin - to me it just doesn't belong here. But I have to say they do very well. And they are everything than a hidden gem. We came in about half an hour before the session was due to start and didn't find any corner to sit. But the staff was very accomodating. As we had a couple of bags with us they offered to place than behind the bar so that they weren't in anybodys way and brought one stool for me - my friend got offered one as well but was fine standing. And as far as I can tell is was a very good trad session and the atmosphere very good - a mixture of locals and tourists but nobody minded the other they were all just there to enjoy the evening. As for their beer: You can get craft beer from the adjacent restaurant or stay with their main stream beer. We didn't try their food. And definitely worth mentioning are the two canaries in their bird cage above the bar. One of them starts singing (complaining?) when the music starts - a noise you quickly get used to. Definitely a lovely and unusual pub that I wouldn't mind going to again. read more

We enjoyed 2 hours of a fun fiddle/guitar duo and even though it was a weeknight they got lots of people up dancing - locals and travelers alike. I had a few days in Dublin, mostly weekdays, and I'm a huge fan of Irish music, so I wanted to seek out some quality traditional pub music (the "craic" as they call it). I'm reviewing a few places all at once since you really need to compare pubs to decide where to find the best music. - The Celt - Wednesday 9pm - a guitarist/vocalist and a fiddle. The fiddlist especially was very talented. Good traditional pub atmosphere at The Celt. But they had audio quality problems about an hour in - insanely loud and annoying crackling, popping feedback on the amp system. They were unable to resolve the issue. If not for that, they would've been 5 stars. - O'Neils - Guitarist/vocalist and accordion. Good but somewhat 'Americanized' (not as authentic). Better beer selection than most bars. They had BrewDog's Punk IPA. - Murray's - Thursday 11pm - the band ended their music just as we walked in at 11. Disappointing that they ended so early, but could've been good otherwise. - O'Gallaghers - no music playing (Thursday @ 10pm). - Madigan's - a solo guitarist / singer but he was talented for sure. We were pleasantly surprised by just how good the food was here. We didn't actually sit in the pub since it was too full so we were seated in the sister restaurant next door. We still ordered off of the menu for the Celt though. We ordered the Guinness stew and bangers and mash. The Guinness stew, based on the opinion of all 4 of my family members, was the best they had had since being in Dublin (which was about 7 days). My bangers and Mash were flavorful, filling, and very juicy. Everything was a hit! We also ordered dessert which was bit on the fancy side for our taste. The blueberry cheesecake, strawberries and cream, and carmel dessert were all delicious. They were pricey at almost €7 each so we probably wouldn't order them again. We got there and couldn't find a seat at the bar or in the restaurant, so we got stuck in the beer garden. Neither of us smoke and gives us both an instant headache. Since we were out there we had to go up to the bar to order dinner since the waiters didn't really know we were there. The salmon chowder is great as is the Guinness bread.
