    Chicken risotto

Celino's is one of those places you hear so much about that you wonder if it'll live up to expectations. I finally got the chance/excuse to visit for lunch and seriously loved my meal. This Italian deli/restaurant is super popular, and on a Thursday it nearly looked like we weren't going to get a table. Thankfully there was a booth waiting for us in the corner which was just perfect. They offer a two course lunch but I'd just had toast at Stan's around the corner, so just opened for a main sized portion of risotto with chicken (pollo bianco - chicken, sauteed mushrooms with cream and white wine sauce) for £8.50. Food didn't take long to arrive and it was absolutely perfect. Restaurant risotto is always risky (especially as I make a killer risotto at home) but this one was probably up there with the best risottos I've ever had. I loved the cream and white wine sauce, it gave it a really luxurious feel. It looks a bit measly in the photo but I promise it was the perfect size portion for lunch. Service was warm and friendly, and generally the place has a bustling, busy vibe. I'm not sure I'd travel to the east end just to go here, but I'd definitely return when I'm in the area. Hot tip: in the deli section they sell meals to take away - lasagne, penne arrabiata, ravioli etc and they're all under £5 for a portion which looks pretty good value for the size you get!

Celino's is one of those authentic Italian restaurants you find in Glasgow and think to yourself, how on earth do the chain places (Jamie's, Frankie and Benny's, Bella Italia etc.) manage to exist when for such a similar, or even lower price you can have excellent authentic food served in a wonderful restaurant by lovely people. My starter of king prawns in a garlic and tomato broth was excellent, and good value for the freshness and quantity of the prawns. My main I had a pizza and almost OD'd on the amount of meat. As soon as I ordered the pizza (with steak, chicken, salami and BACON) I was getting pre-emptive meat sweats. But I shouldn't have bothered, because it actually worked really well. The crusts were so good even Julie ate them and she usually can't stand the crust! And the bacon, I was a bit worried it would be fatty, but it was proper quality thick back bacon, not overpowering the richness of the sauce, the creaminess of the cheese and the thin crisp of the base. As for dessert, the Salted Caramel Sundae (we shared this, it is a big portion) was excellent, however I would recommend asking for extra chopped nuts, as they really blew the sundae away. Salty nut chunks on top of the salted caramel sundae... I want it again soon! Top class wine too. I would have only improved it by offering some Italian craft beer, but the wine was great so I can't complain too much. Final thing to add, we realised our train was going in 7 minutes, and managed to ask for the bill, get a card machine, pay and tip in time to be at the station with 3 minutes to go. Excellent service.

Yummy bread and lots of it.

I can't believe this place does not have more 5 star reviews. It was some of the nicest Italian food I have had outside of Italy. I know the area is a bit out the way but it is only a 5min train journey from Queen street to Alexandra Parade and then a 1min walk from train station to restaurant. It is relatively small inside but this made it feel cosy rather than claustrophobic. We ordered a lovely bottle of white wine which was from a small producer in Italy. It was only £15.95 for the bottle which I thought was very reasonable considering how tasty it was. I had the local deli platter to start and it was lovely £8.98 for a huge selection of Italian meats (4 different kinds), olives, aubergines, salad and 2 different cheeses. We were also given a hugh basket of bread to eat - this was fresh and very tasty. My only gripe about the deli platter is that I would like slightly less meat and more salad, olives and aubergines. My fiancee had chilli fried prawns to start. They perfectly cooked and very fresh. For my main I had ravioli of the day - this was spinach and ricotta in a garlic and sage butter sauce. It was delicious. It was not a massive portion but this was fine by me as had a big starter. My other half had a stonebaked pizza with steak (YES STEAK!!), pepperoni, bacon and vegetables. It was amazing. It had the thinest base ever and had plenty of toppings. It could have gave La Favorita a good run for it's money! We were shared a caramel shortcake sundae. This was also delicious. The bill came to £55 which for the quality of food and a bottle of wine, I thought was very good value for money. The staff were very freindly and helpful. I can't wait to go back to try more of their menu.

Another day, another trip to Celinos. This time I had poached eggs on toast with a coffee..nice and runny with lovely bread. And the friendliest staff in the east end!

Celino's has the same kind of thing as Coia's down on Duke Street going on. It's a Dennistoun institution. I haven't actually eaten in the restaurant section (yet!), but their deli is lovely. It sells all manner of Italian food from the fairly big shop. There are oils, cooking sauces and treats, including Walkers Shortbread! The fresh foods counter has a huge variety of hams and cold meats, as well as tubs of olives, sun dried tomatoes and cheeses. Because most of their food is real Italian, all the boxes are in Italian, so I don't even know what some of the stuff is. But if you ask any member of staff, I'm sure they'd be happy to help. It prides itself of being a member of the local community.

Celino's is an Authentic Italian deli and cafe situated on Alexandra Parada in the East End of Glasgow. It imports a range of stock from Italy including biscuits, cake, pasta and sauces. Celino's has a homely feel with family photographs lining the walls. My favourite feature of Celino's is the tubs of homemade pasta and risotto and garlic bread baguettes which are available to take away for very reasonable prices (tub of pasta costs £3). Perfect for those nights you can't be bothered to cook.

The fake fireplace humoured us at first but later on we forgot about it and it seemed like the real thing. We were happy, warm, and in good spirits. To start off, we were surprised with a humongous portion of fresh steamed mussels in a savoury tomato broth. This was expertly timed to be followed by our platefuls of freshly made pasta. Gorgeous was the creamy carbonara with Parmagiano and Amatriciana, which were wallops of a finish to the nights eats. The staff were lovely, the male wait person in particular was very accommodating and his sincerity was felt. We really wanted to do dessert..but alas again too full! Why did I not see Donald and Peter's rave reviews before now? The world is a cruel and wicked place, but I have to let bygones be bygones and accepted that I am, indeed, a douche for not finding this place sooner. Nestled in Mount Florida near Hampden Park, you wouldn't necessarily find this little place. From the outside it looks nothing more that your typical Italian joint. Almost neglected you may say. There's nothing particularly appealing about the shop front. Furthermore as they have no website I had no real idea what to expect food wise. So, I went in completely blind, not knowing anything. First impressions were excellent, very cosy, only 8 or 9 tables, nice Italian music in the background, the chatter of Italian in the kitchen and amongst the waiters. It all boded very well. We ordered some drinks and after a quick rummage through the menu (which all looked great, and very well priced) we were recited the specials of the day. In true Italian style we took the plunge and went for a mega feast of four courses. Nothing particularly challenging for a Wednesday night I must say. To begin, we had a duo of bruschettas - one, a classic tomato and the other with friarielli (or Italian wild broccoli). Afterwords we had a wonderful seafood caserecce pasta dish (primo) with fresh clams and squid. It tasted just like the real stuff I would get in Italy. After, yes there was more (or a secondo), a huge fitto misto (which we shared) which is basically battered and fried seafood. The batter was so light and crisp, and served with lemon its a simple and easy dish that is difficult to top. Finally for desert was a home-made amarena cherry and amaretto cheesecake. It was oh so rich and creamy. Exquisite!!! All this was washed down with some rather darn fine Soave white wine, and the best part was the final bill, incredibly good value for money considering the quantity and the amazing quality of the food we had. I could not recommend this place enough. A real proper Italian restaurant, which is going straight into my top Italian eateries list. I simply cannot wait to go back.

It was a noisy place - very busy - but with a good vibe. We were seated near the kitchen so we could watch the chefs. One gentleman ran his ungloved hand through his hair, put the hat back on and then proceeded to grab a ball of fresh noodles and drop them in the water. The gloved hand wasn't used. I don't know what to think, but not very sanitary, but then nothing the boiling water wouldn't take care of either. ;) The cook staff were constantly busy and were not standing around. Located just off the Finnieston strip next to Ox & Finch, we actually tried going here last year but for some reason they were closed on a Saturday night so we went to Mother India instead. A group of 5 of us visited for dinner last night. The restaurant is pretty small actually but not pokey - no one was seated right beside us and the music gives it a good atmosphere so you don't feel like people are listening to your conversation. The menu is really impressive - I pretty much wanted to eat every single dish. As Rocco G says, it's not your usual Italian dishes on the menu and you can be a little more adventurous here (although there is a section of traditional Italian dishes which are more common in the UK like bolognese, carbonara, lasagne). There's lots of eggplant/aubergine (drool) and loads of delicious-sounding seafood, as well as nod to Scottish folk with a chicken breast stuffed with haggis. There's even a good range of vegetarian dishes. I went for the scallops to start (£9.95) which were beautifully plump (is there any other way to describe a good scallop), served in a lovely tangy Aurum liqueur sauce. For the price I thought 3 scallops was very reasonable, and really enjoyed how perfectly they were cooked. For main I couldn't go past the gnocchi with king prawns in a white wine sauce (£11.95). It was a huge portion (too large, if I'm honest) but overall a really wonderful dish packed with flavour but not smothered in sauce, and really letting the puffs of gnocchi shine. There was one main large prawn (in the shell) and then smaller prawns scattered around the dish - again, for the price I thought this was really good value. I even went for dessert (something I rarely do) as I quite fancied the tiramisu (I think around £5). Again, great sized portion, lovely presentation and had a nice boozy/coffee kick to it. I couldn't eat it all so they happily popped it in a container for me to take home (guess what I'm having for lunch today?!). Service was great - we were looked after by two staff members who were both friendly and helpful. There was a mix up with the mains as one of our party didn't receive his, and they only realised as they were bringing out our dishes. I thought the way it was handled was really nice - they offered him some bread while he waited, and then took his dessert off the bill to say sorry. Life lesson: If Rocco G says it's good, it's going to be good.

It was pretty early (6pm) so we did, thankfully. I'd been here once before probably about 2 or 3 years ago and I remember that I really loved it that time, so I was keen to come back to see how it was. We decided to go with the pre theatre menu as it is a pretty reasonable £11.95 for 3 small plates (Italian tapas). There is definitely more exciting options on the a la carte menu but a good range on the pre theatre. The wine list is also huge with loads of wines by the glass which is great if one of you is driving. I asked for some more information on the rosé and the waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful which was great - I settled on the pinot grigio rosato which was perfect (£5.50 for a small glass). For food, I ordered: penne in a rich tomato sugo with fresh chilli and basil, chicken fillet with spicy Sardo in a rich tomato and cream sauce and baby calamari deep fried and served with spicy Siciliana sauce. The food arrived quickly and Parmesan cheese was generously applied (just the way I like it). I really liked the calamari, it was a generous serve with a nice batter and well cooked. I did come across one piece which was chewy but the rest was really good. The penne was tasty and flavoursome without being groundbreaking. What was amazing however was the chicken fillet. Wow, this was amazing. It had a really intense, creamy, rich flavour and was one of those dishes you just don't want to end. I was pretty much licking the plate by the end of it. I told the waitress how much I liked it and she said it is really good with pasta too - damn her, now I really want the recipe! Haha. The bill came to just over £30 which was pretty good for an early Friday night dinner. The staff were super lovely here, I couldn't fault their service and how helpful they were.

It reminded me of the University Cafe on Byres Road which I also used to frequent on a regular basis years ago; no added fanciness or pretension, a dash of surly waitress and a pinch of chippy grease to soothe the (hungover) soul. Well Coia's Cafe, my how you've grown! Upon 1st entering Coia's quite soon after it reopening I must admit I got sad and longed for the school-style tables and greasy misspelled menus but mostly for the mucho cheapness of the old Coia's. Oof. Then upon visiting Coia's again after this 1st time I grew to love Coia's for what it is now - a great Italian cafe/restaurant. I must admit I do still find the prices a tad steep for myself but having said that you do certainly get what you pay for and wow! Hello big portions! Woof-a-doodle-doo. I'm quite a big eater and I like a healthy (as in unhealthy) sized portion of foodage when I'm dining and Coia's certainly does not disappoint! Stuffed City. Whether it be a lazy weekend brunch/lunch or an evening meal Coia's caters for all. They still have their greasyspoon throwback - the chippy menu alongside quality Italian dishes, such as pizzas and pastas and gorgeous fresh fish of day (I had the sea bass once and it was beautiful) plus lighter bites such as omelette's (which are lovely), baked potatoes (again tasty), toasties and paninis/rolls/baguettes. The desserts are great too. Their own ice-cream (in many flavours) is lush, especially with some of that blood, I mean raspberry sauce on top. Yum. Coia's Cafe also do one of my favourite coffees ever: The Caffe Royale. This is their gorgeous coffee with whipped cream on top. It is better than I just made it sound, honest guv. They also have a tasty wine list and they serve draft Birra Moretti which is equally lovely. If you've never ventured into the dark and mysterious East End/Duke Street then please do not let this put you off coming here to try out one of Glasgow's finest Italian cafe/restaurants, you're missing out if you don't. Only minus point I have is getting a table on a weekend is sometimes a bugger but you're more than welcome to book a table so don't let this put you off as we all know that the best things come to those that wait (hopefully not for too long though...).

Don't expect modern, fancy schmancy decor, that isn't what they're about, expect to be greeted by 3rd/maybe even 4th generation family members who want to serve you the food they grew up with. Open from breakfast through lunch and dinner the menu has something for everyone. I, a creature of habit, opt for the calzone on every occasion (each time stating I will have something different but never do!) and once you try it you'll understand why! It must be at least 12" in diameter, has the best dough and can be filled with your choice of up to 3 fillings (meatballs, spicy chicken and mozzarella are my fav's). It's amazing and at £10.25 is a fraction of what Papa Johns or Dominos will sting you! Freshly grated Parmesan is always offered for anyone having pasta, rightly so. They also stock my favourite lemon San pellegrino soft drink, this makes me uber happy. Should you have space for pudding there's always a great selection to choose from but I would instead recommend checking out the revolving ice cream wheel...oh my is it awesome! It's part of the deli where you can buy produce to takeaway, always worth a browse. A word of warning though, you can very rarely just turn up and get seated straight away, they are constantly mobbed! Expect to wait a few minutes for a table; as the saying goes though "good things come to those who wait".
