My review may be a little strange, but bear with me because it's painful to write.
We were on the Celebrity Summit's repositioning cruise from Bayonne to San Juan, October 20 - 26. We had an Aqua Class Room, and loved every minute of it. We were greeted with champagne on boarding, and had a wonderful time. We were traveling with two other couples on what was supposed to be a fun-filled adventure.
My husband was feeling a bit weak after two years of cancer treatment but he was cleared for travel and was predicted to make a full recovery. I decided he should be pampered on this cruise which was why I chose the Aqua Class cabin. We had access to the spa. He had a massage, used the sauna, and liked to hang out on the warm benches in the spa. He loved the adults-only solarium, too.
The food was outrageously good. We had access to Blu but chose to eat with our friends in the main dining room and every meal was a delight.
We didn't get to take any of the shore excursions. Since my husband was feeling weak, we canceled out St. Maarten shore excursions and booked a rental car instead. I drove him around to the French side where we had lunch before heading back to the ship.
That evening, during dinner, my husband suffered a subdural hematoma. The response from the crew was outstanding. They had a wheelchair up there in record time, and rushed him to the ship's hospital. I was impressed with the ship's hospital, despite my absolute terror. Looking back I can appreciate all that they did, and in reading the medical reports I know that they handled things with the utmost professionalism. Dr. Victor Aguilera Alvarez was honest with me about my husband's condition.
The decision was made to turn the ship around and head back into St. Maarten. My friend Ellen and I were accompanied by two crew members who quickly packed up the entire room. It was done so quickly I barely remember it.
At the port we were met by Celebrity's representative, Josette. She took my luggage so that I could get to the hospital with my husband. She arranged for a hotel room and taxis for me as well. She took our passports to be stamped in to St. Maarten, and brought them back to me after.
My husband was rushed to St. Maarten Medical Center. He never regained consciousness. Everyone on board the Summit was so gracious and kind. While it was a horrible event, I am grateful that my husband enjoyed the cruise as much as he did. read more
