Cedars is conveniently located in U-District area, making this place really well-known. When I came here, it was rather serene and the interior made up from wood materials give out the ambience of nature scenes. They have plenty meat/meatless options (fish, beef, lamb, chicken, prawn, vegetable, and paneer). My friends and I decided to go for vegetarian options and got garlic naan, paneer tikka masala, paneer butter masala, and vegetable kofta. Each of the entree also comes with a plate of basmati rice (oh yes!) The tikka and butter masala were well-seasoned and tasted slightly similar since they both have the same curry base. We enjoyed the butter masala better since it was creamier. The vegetable kofta is a vegetable-and-cheese stuffed meatball and it was so flavorful! It was our favorite dish! The garlic naan was served with mint cilantro and sweet tamarind chutney. The garlic naan wasn't made to the level of crispness we were hoping for and it could get a little more kick of garlic. The price is quite fair for an Indian restaurant but I would say the portion is somewhat smaller compared to other similar establishments I've been to. Regardless, the staffs were friendly and accommodating and the food delivers (except for the naan) ! I will definitely come back to try other things they have on the menu! read more

I love Cedars here in the U District. I am not an expert on Indian cuisine by any means, but I do know that it is easy to enjoy the food they serve here. I usually come in with a friend every few weeks for garlic naan, curry (which comes with a plate of rice), and a mango lassi. Getting naan is practically a must when you come to Cedars, as the bread is very tasty and the sauces that come on the side combine very well with it. I have tried other naans in the past, but the garlic naan is my personal favorite. So far we have tried the jalfrazie curry, the rogan josh curry, and the tikka massala curry. All three of these curries are unique and have great flavors. We always order our curry at a five star spice level, but for whatever reason, it does not always come out very spicy. This usually disappoints me and my love of spicy food, but the curry is still very enjoyable. The mango lassi, a personal favorite of mine, is good and there's nothing to complain about here. A quick side story about one of our recent experiences here: There was one instance where we were seated next to a window and an employee was working on the exterior of the restaurant just outside. Toward the end of our meal, he came inside and apologized for the "disruption" he caused our meal and provided us with a free dessert! We were completely fine and barely noticed the man working outside, but we did appreciate his willingness to go out of his way to make sure we had a great experience. Yes, it's probably too sweet by conventional standards, but they do a great job with the flavor and the spices. I always get a mango lassi, a chicken tikka masala, and a garlic naan to share. Mediterranean and Indian is a strange combination, but Cedars makes it work. I ordered the lamb palak masala. The earthy spices played well with the lamb to eliminate all gaminess, but the spinach took too strongly to them. The dish was wonderfully filling, and while the spinach did taste a bit like mud, it was the tastiest mud I've ever had. In any case, the lamb certainly made up for it. Our server was very kind, and the space is nice (if quite cramped). If you're a student in the area and need a place to go to show off to your parents how mature you're getting, this is a great option. read more

I really like this place and have since, sheesh, the mid 90s. I'll bet if you rearrange the letters for "Cedars on Brooklyn," it would spell "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It." Actually, no, it doesn't, but an anagram generator does say it could spell "Broke randy colons" or "crooked nylon bras". Silly anagrams. Anyway... Their menu--a few Middle Eastern items and a healthy selection of popular Indian dishes--seems to have changed very little over the years, nor has their overall formula and approach: good, reliable, tasty food at a reasonable price in a no-frills, no-nonsense environment. There are plenty of options here; lots for vegetarians, and of course plenty for chicken-atarians, lamb-atarians, and so on. They definitely will oblige if you want your food to be spicy. Appetizer plates easily serve 4 adults, and they make nice, big, fluffy pieces of naan. The dining experience is kinda hectic and kinda laid back at the same time, which suits the U-District well. The restaurant can be loud and boisterous. Typically the entire waitstaff seems to share responsibility for every table, which means service will ebb and flow, but everyone who works here is friendly and quick with any request. They seem more than ready for large groups, and they may still cater...many moons ago, some friends got married and had Cedars cater the wedding, and it was great! read more

Great restaurant! We got the garlic naan to share and the sauces were really good and the naan was huge! I got the falafel plate and my partner got the mango curry with chicken. Both were really great, and there was a lot of chicken in the curry. We even had leftovers! The employees were really kind and kept a distance from the table when taking orders. This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants to visit! The workers are so friendly and attentive, and the food is amazing! I always order a lamb tikka masala and a mango lassi drink. The butter lamb tikka masala is so rich and creamy, while the drink is not overly sweet. There's parking for customers over at Safeway so this is definitely a place to visit since most restaurants in Seattle don't even offer free parking or make you look and pay for street parking, or parking lots, which can be a pain sometimes! read more

Came in here for lunch and... first impression? Either it's just much more spacious and light during the day, or they've been doing some upgrades/painting, or both. The food was good and so was the service. A woman was walking around refilling mugs of (very tasty) chai the whole time, and that was quite beautiful. I didn't know about the never-ending re-fills until my friend had gotten about two, so this time I decided to just have some of his instead of ordering my own this late in the game. One of the friends I went here with is vegan, and the staff was down with excluding cream from the curries. I was glad when we asked about a dish that has cream specifically listed, because she then asked us if we wanted to exclude it from another dish (that didn't have that ingredient listed on the menu). I've definitely had some bad experiences, good/okay experiences, and great experiences at this restaurant. I think this visit fits into the "great" category. I'm also thinking that perhaps lunch is a better time to go here than dinner. read more

This was my first Indian restaurant I ate at and I never looked back. My brother who went to UW before I did recommended the place to me and the butter chicken. I have scoured various restaurants everywhere to get that same flavor and taste but nowhere else compares to Cedars. I can't speak much about other dishes. Oh I also always get the garlic naan. Portion sizes are pretty large! I always come out with leftovers. The place hasn't changed much in terms of decor. The service is okay. We were transported to India Saturday night. It was surrealistically hot, I was starving hungry and ready to have an emotional meltdown, and the place we were planning to eat had already closed (8 pm, and it was 8:45). I'm looking around for my rescue, and damn, even Jack in the Box was looking good, which means I have hit The Wall foodwise. But then I noticed Cedars a block further along and had one of those "this is meant to be moments" and that propelled me to the restaurant. We were seated immediately on the deck, thank goodness, as it was truly hot as Hades in the restaurant itself. We saw several people who were seated inside get back up to leave because they just couldn't take the heat. On the whole, though, it was crowded and hot and neighborly and we joked that if we really were in India, it would be just a little hotter but not much. Our table neighbor inside the restaurant (through flung-open French doors) had fun talking to us and encouraged us to funnel any slight breeze his way, which we promised to do. :-) The service was great though brisk. I have to admit, I hate European-style no-free-refill soda, but I survived it. I would have had way too much caffeine if it was all you can swill diet beverage.The manager hovered a little over us, in a friendly way. We started with a pair of the keema nans. They were so good that they earned the coveted "ohmigod, ohmigod, ohmigod" bliss-faced pronouncement that at least one of us will utter when something is out of this world good. The bread contains a sublime combination of ground beef, ginger, onions and a little cumin, and though I was so hungry I could have eaten cardboard with ginger on it, it really was fantastic. I'd forgotten how good, really; I've eaten here before and I'm sure that's one of the things I had last time. John had the coconut curry, medium spice, and he chowed down so it must have been good. I tasted the sauce and liked it, which is saying something, because coconut is pretty high on my ick scale. I had the lamb butter masala and had to close my eyes in delerious pleasure at the first mouthful. I haven't had lamb in a long time and that sauce is my absolute favorite on earth. The basmati rice was perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned, though John discovered an entire bay leaf in his. We're good sports so we didn't care about it, we laughed instead. The pace at the restaurant was truly frenetic; they were really busy and food was completely flying out of the kitchen. When I went to the restroom I was able to look into the tiny kitchen and it's very impressive to watch; very efficient and everyone's helping everyone else in a most wonderful way. They were really smiling and happy, nobody was pissed off and grim. However, every time a new order was brought into the kitchen, which was often, someone rang a desk bell four or five times. I loved it! It seemed friendly and encouraging and even maybe playful to me, but John wondered if it wasn't a sort of "hurry up already" kind of thing... I prefer to think people are just pumped while they work there. Like I said, we sure didn't get any bad attitude from anyone despite it being dark and well over 90 degrees (and well over 100 in the kitchen). When it's this hot, be careful in the ladies' room. The window will be wide open and there is no screen, but good sight lines, into the room. It's not the time to adjust your most intimate undergarments, if you get my drift, though on the throne, nobody can see you. It's all good. This was truly a fantastic meal. I loved the heat, the energy, and the food. I doubt we will ever recreate it, but I'd be glad to go back to Cedars again. read more

This is my favorite Indian food on Seattle of all I've tried so far. They also have a good selection of Mediterranean cuisine as well. The main reason I love this place is because of the bigger-than-your-face-naan :) jk but not really. The naan is not only generously portioned but fluffy, fresh, crispy where it should be, and nicely flavored (get the garlic naan!). My hubby said you could get the naan amd eat that with the provided sauces (tamarind and cilantro sauces) and call it a meal :) Let's talk about the butter masala. It's on point. Buttery, rich, flavorful, delicious. Get it! The tandoori chicken is also on point. It has a nice grilled flavor and is tender. I really am against dry tandoori so this was great. So me and some friends had a small shindig here before one leaves for Syria forever! I don't know how we wandered in here on a 90 degree day out to a place where we knew the tandoor and the fires would be a 'roaring. But somehow we managed to still be craving some savory spices. Good thing too, since it was such a hot day we had the place to ourselves! Muahaha. Usually that equates to star service which proved to be true to the end. First they immediately filled 4 large glasses with ICE water. A must-have considering even with all windows open and 5 fans going it felt like a grill inside there. So props for immediately replenishing us there. And I ordered the Mango Lemonade (soooo delicious!) Probably not hard to make, haha but well worth it to me at the time. Then came game-time....the opening of the menu! Oh man I can't tell you how many hours I've spent on menus intricately reading every detailed description to try and narrow down my top 3, which then I end up randomly picking out of on a whim.....it's almost a guilty pleasure... Finally I chose a tried and true favorite from other places: lamb tikki masala....! And of course we had to have our garlic naan. Service was uber quick to get the food out, as I'm sure they didn't want to linger over that fire anymore than we wanted to make them! So within 5-10 minutes, all the dishes were out. Starting of course with the delicious naan that we all devoured. The spice to sauce ratio was perfect on my dish and I was quite pleased to see them refilling all ice waters as our tastebuds ventured into each other's dishes. The other dishes were Butter Chicken, Mango Curry, and Karai Gosht. All were delicious, but I really liked the Mango curry......such an old flavor combination to me but it worked well. By the time we were full we were all the temperature of the sun, but at least we were content. I give theis place 5 stars for sure. And will be back to menu soul search once more. read more

I didn't think I was a fan of Indian food before (simply because I've never had it before), but after coming here, I'm in love with butter chicken + naan. BEST FOOD: Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan These are huge portions, so it's best to get two main dishes and a naan between two people. If you come in a party of 4, a naan between 4 is still decent portioning since the main dishes come with rice as well. The butter chicken is sweet and (like the name suggests) creamy that is great with rice or naan. It'd be difficult to eat the butter chicken on its own because of how rich it is. SERVICE: Great The owner is super nice and promptly comes around to check on the customers. Every time I've gone, I've seen the owner either seat people or taking orders; he is very much as involved as his employees are. SEATING: Spacious, Plenty This place has a very home-y vibe to it. It is great for large parties (10+), small parties, or even lone diners! Although if you go at dinner time on weekends there might be a wait, in general, the wait is super short (less than 15 min, at worst) and food comes out pretty fast anyways. CONS: Too much food (which really isn't a con if you think about it) I always have to get my leftovers togo cuz there's simply too much food to be finished in one sitting. Would recommend getting takeout and just eating it at home at your own pace! read more

Went in around 5pm, loved that it was not crowded and I was seated almost immediately. The downside was that the hostess nor the waitress ever smiled or greeted my family welcomingly. As soon as my family sat down, there was a strange looking bug on the table. Quickly my sister spotted it and my dad already removed it.(before I got to take a picture of it.) Obviously, better cleaning is needed here. Ordered garlic and spinach naan, butter chicken, mango beef curry, and the beef shish kabob. The naans were great as always. Also, great price considering how big it is. The garlic naan is my favorite and its only 2.75! I highly recommend getting the butter chicken with it. Pairs really well together. I would not recommend the beef shish kabob though. If was very dry and hard to chew. Not worth getting. Overall, good food and I would come back. read more

Came here last night with a group of friends before we headed to a play. I had been craving Cedars and excited to have garlic naan and roghan josh with lamb. The naan wasn't very garlicky and the roghan josh was aiight. I ordered chai and it was lacking ginger. Overall, I was full and adequately happy but it made me wonder a few things: A. When I remember all of the times I ate at Cedars, it was always really good. I could never finish my own meal and the naan was so garlicky that I'd have to brush my teeth for a two days before it completely left my breath. Was the deliciousness of this place because I was young and didn't know any better? OR B. Cedars isn't what it used to be and the quality has gone down since I first ate here in 2006... Either way, it was disappointing but still decent. Not sure I would choose to eat here again since there are other places that have good Indian food. It makes me wish that this wasn't the case but really wasn't impressed with the overall quality of the food and left me feeling "meh." BUT the 15% off coupon sure helped when you check-in to this place. That's a redeeming quality...right? Right? Sigh. read more

Walking outside, it appeared to be a nice, charming place. I didn't get that much of it upon entering. The place definitely shows some neglect over the years. I almost spilt my wonderful chai from just resting my elbows on the edge so the table I had was too wobbly. I think I had the spinach and eggplant naan... both rather bland and lacking. I am NOT a fan of Indian food. I've tried Indian food for the first time a few years ago. It was at the Taste of India in U-district. I went with someone who loves Indian food, but as usual, I thought I was the one who could choose the best entrees on the menu. WRONG! I chose some kind of fish dish. It was gross. My dinner mate also hated it...the only saving grace that night (for me) was the Naan. Needless to say, my first Indian food experience was not a success. Fast forward 2 years later... I gave Indian food a second try....this time to Cedars. I hear good things about this place so I figured it would be a good restaurant to help me form a second opinion. We ordered Naan (of course)...and it was HUGE! They were hanging off the plate it was served on. Yum! For my entree I chose Tandoori Chicken Tikka. I didn't mind the taste of the chicken, but the pieces of chicken I was served were disgusting. Fatty and grissly....bleh! But the Basmati Rice and Veggies were ok. My cousin ordered the Tikka Masala, I didn't try it but it looked good and he said it was good. Sadly once again, the bread was the best part of my meal. What am I doing wrong?
