Oh Cedars...I feel like we are old friends. I heard of Cedars from Day 1 of living in Seattle. It took me 9 months of living here to finally get around to trying it. I'm pretty much a creature of habit, and I stick to what I like. But good friends, whose recommendations I trust, encouraged me to try Cedars in the U District. I love this place! Cute patio for outdoor dining, and good seats inside for people watching. I went with my staples: chicken tikka masala, palak paneer with aloo, vegetable pakoras, and garlic naan. Pakoras were good (onions, potato, and cauliflower), chicken tikka masala was spicy and plentiful, and palak paneer was thick and delicious. The garlic naan was gorgeous coming to the table (see picture), but it was too crispy for my liking. I like my naan buttery and soft. The wait staff is super friendly; however, I did not see the waiter after our initial order. I did get great service from the bus staff, though. They kept my water full and assisted with getting the bill paid promptly. I can't give this establishment 5 stars simply because the area is a bit dodgy. I have been in the area several times to eat, walk around, get tattoos (haha), but I never considered it unsafe until my visit to Cedars. When I was pulling out of the parking lot, a group of guys came running by, one fell, and the others started kicking and beating him up. Had I not been a somewhat helpless female, I would have stopped...but man, it was brutal. Once I noticed that, I started noticing other questionable characters hanging around the area. When your stomach begins to crave naan and curry... you know that it's time to hit up an Indian restaurant. And here I was, at 50th making my way to Cedar's restaurant. It's in this cute little house looking structure, and it's on the second floor. The place is decorated with Christmas lights, which I think is a little out of season. I feel like an Indian place could really do with more gold and red tones, but I'm not gonna rate the place by the way the place looks - only how the food and service was. We were seated by the window and were given our menus. We knew what we wanted and waited for a waiter to come to take our orders. It took a long while for the waiter to come to us, which was a bit of a bummer, but eventually they did notice that we were trying to eye down one. Indian food is usually very filling so my boyfriend and I decided to share a plate and a side of naan. We ordered the garlic naan because it was only $2.50 for a huge piece. We then ordered the famous chicken tikka malasa. Our garlic naan came and that thing is gigantic. I know you hear from almost every Indian restaurant that the naan is big, but this is the biggest one I've seen. I've been to Shalimar and Taste of India, but I think Cedar's naan was slightly bigger than Taste of India's. However, I think it lacked the garlic flavor that Taste of India had. None the less, naan is naan, and that naan was delicious. I really liked how they gave you the brown and green sauce (not even sure what it's called) in it's little container for you to dip at your own will. Places like Taste of India give you a small little dish that contains the sauce and you always want to have more. Here at Cedars, you can use as much or as little as you want! Then our Tikka Masala came out. And it smelt so aromatic. We got it as medium hot, and unfortunately, it failed to live up to even medium. It wasn't spicy at all - which was unfortunate because I wanted to eat some curry with a kick. None the less, the curry was really good still. The chicken was made just right and was succulent and juicy. I would say this curry was just as good, or even better than the other Indian places I have gone to. My husband found this gem and we were there shortly after they opened on a Saturday. We started with the hummus plate which was good, the warm pita was delish. Next the paneer pakora with chutney was out of this world! Then the paneer naan was enormous but we also got plain naan but couldn't eat it because they were so large. Hubs and I usually get the chicken tikka (a must-order in my opinion), vegetable jalfrezi and/or vegetable vindaloo with a side order of vegetable samosas and garlic naan. We've ordered from a few Indian places in North Seattle and this one is the best by far. Everything is always delicious and the flavors are consistent. Portions are big - you do not need to order extra rice! Chicken in the tikka is tender and you get a nice assortment of vegetables if you sub those in. Pick-up time is normally quick too; we ordered on a Saturday night and it was ready within 20 minutes. If you are in NE Seattle I definitely suggest going to this place! This place is my family's favorite Indian Restaurant! We live in Florida now but when we come back to visit this is on the checklist of things to do. Portions are big and the naan is bigger than your head! You will need to go boxes guaranteed. The samosas are packed full so you could probably share one with a friend. Flavors are unique as is every Indian restaurant. No one place is the same in taste as the other, we like the taste of their curries/masala sauce here because they are a tad sweeter and more creamier than most. We ordered: -Chicken Vindaloo -Coconut Chicken Curry -Palak Paneer -Eggplant -garlic naan -vegetable pakora -gulab Jamun The good. Portions were HUGE. I was stunned. The chicken dishes were good. The chicken was tender. Garlic naan was good as was the pakora. The dessert was pretty good and a standard gulab jamun. Things we didn't like: the eggplant was smoked/charred which is not the traditional way to make Indian eggplant dishes. It's the way you make middle eastern dips so perhaps that's why it was made this way since the restaurant serves both cuisines. It also had an insane amount of peas. The saag paneer was ok but lacked flavor. Overall it was ok but I've had way better Indian food elsewhere. It's worth a try though! read more

Their huge naan, perfectly cooked and seasoned curries and meat, fragrant rice... you can't beat it. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala with two stars spice level, while my cousins got an assortment of different tikka masalas and butter curries. We got four garlic naan to share (which may seem like a lot considering the portion size of each naan but we loveeeee our naan!!) Ordered butter chicken and palak paneer. Both were decent, though both tasted a little sweet than I prefer/am used to. The other people I ate with loved it though. My daughter inhaled the garlic naan. Only note would be that they have you order and pay off your phone using a QR code, which may be difficult to navigate for someone less tech-savvy, unfamiliar with the restaurant or/and from out of town. Upon arrival, greeted with "how can I help you", I said "two for dinner", the employee motioned us to follow him and asked if a table over by the window was good, so we walked over to it on our own. No menus were given, and if it wasn't for a Yelp review indicative of pointing out that the QR code at the table is how everything is ordered (even drinks or booze), we may have sat at the table or awhile, so a little instruction upon arrival would be so beneficial for those "not in the loop". Without hyperbole, this may be the best Indian food I've ever tasted. We had the mazza plate, two orders of naan, and two curry dishes, and the generous portions meant the two of us didn't come near finishing everything. The baba ganoush with the mazza was quite good, as was the hummus. The butter paneer was a great vegetarian option for me, and the butter sauce was spiced to perfection. The paneer naan is to die for. Every bite is loaded with cheese, garlic, spices, and herbs. The service was attentive and upbeat and the ambiance was lovely. We were there on a Sunday evening and a nearly empty restaurant meant our food was out almost instantly (at most ten minutes after ordering). I came with my mom and fiancé's family to grab some dinner, and was not greeted by anyone upon entering. A few minutes later someone finally came to the front to seat us. I was so excited for their naan, after seeing some great looking photos, but remember, photos can be deceiving! We got a mix of vegetarian and non-veg dishes, and I can honestly say I cared for none of them. We got a chicken vindaloo, dal makhani, garlic naan, amongst others. The service was decent, but they just seemed to not care. The space itself was huge, but it seemed out of date, dirty, and just plain sad. Probably one of my favorite places to get Indian cuisine in the Seattle Area. One perk of this location in the University district, is that there is a parking lot adjacent to the restaurant itself (pay-to-park). The restaurant itself has a decent amount of seating. It has a very local "mom and pops" vibe, and feels like you're at home having a meal. Their service is really good as well. If you have not had Indian food before, as always, try the Chicken Tikka Masala or Butter Chicken. You can't go wrong. Their naan is so good as well! Probably one of the largest portions of naan I've gotten in one order. Which pairs amazing with any of their dishes. Cedars is my favorite Indian restaurant in the University District area. I've been here on numerous occasion with friends. Food: Their butter chicken masala is absolutely amazing. The curry has a rich aroma and is not overwhelmed by spice. The chicken is extremely tender and super flavorful. Cedars actually gives a lot more chicken than I think is needed for the dish, but I'm always happy with more protein. Their garlic naan is extremely good. The bread comes out warm and when mixed with the green and brown sauces, it tastes amazing. Their mango yogurt drink is also good, but I thought it was a little heavy for the meal. Their chai tea also comes with unlimited refills. Service: Usually really good and they're really attentive when you need something. There's usually not a wait and you can get seated right away. Price: I think Cedars can be a little pricy for University District pricing hence the four star. While I do think the food is good, I think it can be a little expensive for what you get. The place would cost about $20 a person if you order just a main dish and a naan bread. Overall, I really like Cedars. I think the food tastes really good and you get a good size portion. It's a nice area to sit down and have a dinner while chatting with a couple friends. Tip: Their to-go orders are like double the size of their eat-in orders. The server was not very friendly but I won't necessarily say rude but when I asked if we could apply the yelp discount (one of the reasons why I came back) she said they no longer do the discount even after saying that I still see it up in yelp. However besides the service and deceiving discount, I do think overall the food is really good and the food is served in a timely manner. A group of friends and I ordered takeout from Cedars today. The guy who took the order over the phone was a friggin' delight and answered all of my dietary/ingredient questions like a champ. When we got there for pickup, the guy at the register was also kind and helpful (may have been the same guy), and also gave us a coupon for free na'an next time! Food was GREAT. First things first; If you think this is Lebanese or Mediterranean food, RUN. The name is deceiving, Cedars is the symbol of Lebanon, the land of the biggest cuisine on the mediterranean. The waitress was the only good thing here, she was nice snd courteous. All the food was spicy and seemed to be the same on all the ingredients. The environment is noisy, they also rush you to leave by suggesting a TOGO box when you just started eating. I ordered the Mediterranean Delight plate at $21.95 and I am never cheap on myself, I regretted even walking in. The food came on a very small plate with the ingredients on top of each others, with the rice falling on the table as soon as the waitress laid it on the table. I am sorry, But I am not impressed, I wonder how many customers were duped into thinking this is a Lebanese restaurant, Lebanese food is on the other side of the spectrum. It is an Indian and a Pakistani restaurant. We did not try the Indian entrees, but the rice was not of a typical Indian quality. The one star is for the waitress. When I came here, it was rather serene and the interior made up from wood materials give out the ambience of nature scenes. They have plenty meat/meatless options (fish, beef, lamb, chicken, prawn, vegetable, and paneer). My friends and I decided to go for vegetarian options and got garlic naan, paneer tikka masala, paneer butter masala, and vegetable kofta. Each of the entree also comes with a plate of basmati rice (oh yes!) The tikka and butter masala were well-seasoned and tasted slightly similar since they both have the same curry base. We enjoyed the butter masala better since it was creamier. The vegetable kofta is a vegetable-and-cheese stuffed meatball and it was so flavorful! It was our favorite dish! The garlic naan was served with mint cilantro and sweet tamarind chutney. The garlic naan wasn't made to the level of crispness we were hoping for and it could get a little more kick of garlic. The price is quite fair for an Indian restaurant but I would say the portion is somewhat smaller compared to other similar establishments I've been to.
