Our horseback ride on the pristine private beach of Cedar Island with Devon was absolutely unforgettable. The island itself feels untouched and magical, with wide stretches of soft sand, sweeping dunes, and the sound of the surf setting a perfect rhythm for the ride. The horses were beautifully trained--attentive, responsive, and clearly well cared for--which made the experience feel both safe and exhilarating. Devon was an exceptional guide: knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely passionate about the island's history and ecology. Her easygoing confidence allowed us to relax and fully enjoy the scenery. If you don't ride horses and you want a slow walk one way for 30 minutes to turn around and slowly walk back looking at the same deserted beach to smell the salt air and not think of a thing and decompress you'll like it. If you want something more than that you'll be disappointed. I'm an equestrian and thought being on the beach would be fun. Not! You have to stay at the walk. The horse handed me was their lead horse ergo wanted to be in the lead. The owner kept telling me to not get ahead of her. I circled all the way to the back of the herd. Guess. My horse went into the trot on his own so I posted and got my hand popped. That horse was in tune with me and wanted to stretch his legs on that beach, but that was not allowed. I understand about liability, but I signed a waiver. Every time we got a length ahead she wanted me to stop. My horse knew Whoa! and 3rd position! That horse had never heard "eeeeeaaazzzzy" or just wasn't feeling it. It was just frustrating and boring. It was a waste of $150 plus a $20 tip plus gas to drive to the end of the world. Speaking of, there are NO gas stations. Gas up and pee before you head there. Glad we did. read more

Took an hour beach horseback ride today. Great value, horses extremely well cared for, the ride very easy. Communication can be a bit difficult with the stables as they are often out on the trail. The stables, and resort are one however so you can book through the motel reservations line if the stables do not answer. Located right at the Cedar Island ferry terminal. There's a motel campground and stables all on the beach. All very clean and well maintained. read more

Stayed here at the end of March 2023, we stayed Thursday in the motel and Friday in the campground. The motel looks to be fully renovated. Very fresh and new feeling. The room was super clean. I really love this spot, I hope they open the restaraunt. Kind of bummed we could not get food there. The campground was great, clean showers and toilets. read more

We stayed at camp sites 1 and 2. Booking and site request were perfect and staff was friendly by phone. We booked this for a Sunday through Saturday stay. We were called Sunday morning informing us that we had the option to check in early. We live about 4 hours away and weren't going to be there until after the office closed. With that being said, we were informed that the office is closed Monday-Wednesday. If we needed anything we could call the number listed and let them know of our concerns. We showed up around 5:00pm and went straight to camp. Upon using the restroom we noticed a terrible sulphur smell. It was very strong and nauseating. Thankfully we brought extra water. But there was also no paper towels in the lady's restrooms and a small amount in the men's. The bathrooms also needed to be cleaned. We only saw a couple other campers there and never saw anyone else in the restrooms. I don't know why they would leave on Sunday, knowing they would not be back until Thursday, without making sure the bathrooms did not need attention. The roads into the campsites were also full of pot holes. This was not an issue for us as overlanders but it says a lot about maintenance. The campsites are set up a bit odd. The sewer connection and water connection are complete opposite of each other. Finding a way to hook up a 45' camper proved to be a challenge. The road to get back to site 1 and 2 has a sharp turn through a fence. Through no fault of theirs, we left a day early but chose not to take a shower because the smell was extra bad in the bathrooms and I couldn't stand the thought of bathing in it. This campground could be very nice if they just took care of the property. read more

This was such an incredible experience for my wife and I on our 1 year anniversary trip! It's a bit of a trek but so worth it and so beautiful. We saw wild horses and wild cows on our ride and it was right along the water, what more could you ask for?! The owners are so friendly and inviting and it was truly an awesome experience. A bit rough around the edges for an RV park, but they do appear to be making some investments to spruce things up. Back in waterside sites are still all dirt/gravel but they recently replaced the bulkhead and have a concrete walkway along the edge. Note that the "waterside" means they are along a small estuary, not the open water. The pull thru sites out near the open water are narrow and have soft spots so be careful with larger rigs. Excellent views of the open water. We were thinking of horseback riding but they recently raised the rates and it was more than we were willing to pay. read more

Absolutely wonderful! My husband is a larger man (6'7") and we have horses ourselves but every stable has limitations, that wasn't an issue at all here. Reba and Shania were the best horses (I wish they were ours) and I highly recommend doing this. We rode during the sunset, next trip we will ride at sunrise. Stayed 3 nights in the suites with uncomfortable beds poor air conditioning caught one of the workers walking right into our room with no explanation and as of now no concern from management also had a difficult time getting extra sheets This was the worst visit we have had in over 20 years of staying there Also the balcony above the suite has a gate and lock preventing use July 2023 read more

I booked a trip for August 12 for my birthday. I was informed of the cancelation agreement of no refunds after I booked my day. That is also how I was informed that the only restaurant on the island was shut down. As well as the laundry facilities also being down. We called today to get more information and was then informed that their is a fishing tournament that weekend..no over flow parking. The prob of seeing wild horses was also slim to none VIA THE TOURNAMENT. I decided to cancel it being that I'm 4 half hrs away and to top it off its $150 for 1 person to ride a horse. I was then informed after I canceled that they would be keeping my money. I was told their was nothing that could b done. My experience was ruined b4 I even went. I have had better customer service at a gas station downtown. Would not recommend. read more

Cedar Island Stables is AMAZING! My husband and I vacationed in Beaufort and drove to Cedar Island to ride. The crew there is sweet and personable. Both of our horses were easier to ride. Each horse has a personality and it was fun riding with the other members in our group. We saw wild horses and wild cows! Such a cool experience. 10/10 recommend! Wear sunscreen and jeans *don't wear shoes you wouldn't want to get dirty or wet incase your horse wants to stay cool in the water. read more

This is a quiet, wonderful place. There's no glitz. But there's a caring staff, well-behaved horses, and a once in a lifetime experience. Our early morning ride, watching the sun rise over the Atlantic. Was unforgettable. Our guide was attentive and matched riders with horses that fit their skill levels (ranging from almost rank novice (and tentative) to very experienced. Absolutely gorgeous scenery riding on the beach and a friendly team running the program. Well worth it. read more
