It is an absolute shame that this wonderful shop has been ruined. All the wonderful employees are gone. What were they thinking??? It was founded in the early twentieth century by Angelo Feroci (Fierce in translation). The store no doubt has been renovated since then. It's covered in marble all over, featuring marble on marble counter stands and benches with bull carvings. The floor mosaic is done in white Carrara marble tiles with black diamonds. A large and ferocious looking black statue of a bull, attached high on the side wall, overlooks your meat selection. Angelo Feroci was recognized for his butchering achievements back in a day, he received a gold medal at the international exhibition in London in 1924, as well as at the international fair of Rome, 'For fresh meat of fine quality'.

Over a few days, the name Antica Caciara kept popping up. Then I picked up a Louis Vuitton Rome City Guide in our hotel lobby, flipped through it, and there it was again. At that point, it had to be fate... or really good marketing. I'm choosing to believe it was fate! The moment you walk in, you're hit with the most amazing aromas of cheese and cured meats. They have a wonderful selection of cheeses, meats, cookies, oils, balsamic vinegars, and all kinds of Italian goodies. But what really made our visit special were Roberto and Anna. Their family has owned and operated the shop since 1900, and they welcomed us with such genuine warmth. Roberto proudly showed us a magazine photo featuring him and the shop, and you could immediately tell how much his family and their history mean to him. It was absolutely charming. Of course, we couldn't leave without bringing Italy home with us. We bought what may have been an excessive amount of 24-month Parmigiano Reggiano to share with family and friends. Anna got quite a laugh out of how much cheese we were taking home! Let's just say an extra suitcase was needed. She even gave us detailed instructions on how to wrap and store it--cheesecloth first, then parchment so the cheese can breathe. Our friends and family were thrilled to receive their little pieces of Italy, beautifully wrapped just the way Anna taught us. Places like this are what make traveling so memorable. Yes, the food was fantastic, but it was the people, the history, and the personal experience that made Antica Caciara one of our favorite little discoveries in Rome. If you're in Rome, go! And tell Roberto and Anna that Glenn and Bob sent you.

In the center was the marketplace section with dry goods and souvenirs to take home. Around the marketplace was different restaurants for grab and go and tables to sit at in small sections around Eatily. There was gelato, a coffee shop, and a bar. The selection was nice. We didn't think much of it at the time, but by the end of our own meal, we unfortunately understood why. The food was decent overall, but the pizzas were a major letdown. They had barely any cheese and were overloaded with tomato sauce, making them feel very unbalanced and disappointing. The biggest issue, however, was with the bill. A dish that we never ordered was brought to our table and then added to our check. When we pointed it out, we expected a simple correction or refund. Instead, we were told they would not remove the charge, leaving us to pay for food we never asked for. That is completely unacceptable and left a very bad impression. We also came as a family of five. There were mostly two- and four-person tables available, and we politely asked if we could move two tables together so we could sit as a family. We were told no, even though we were willing to make it work by having one of the kids sit on a parent's lap. It made the experience feel unnecessarily inconvenient. I do want to mention that most of the servers themselves were friendly and polite throughout our visit. However, good service from individual staff members doesn't make up for being charged for something we didn't order or how the situation was handled afterward. Overall, this experience felt very disappointing and poorly managed. Being required to pay for food we never ordered is not something any customer should have to deal with. I hope management takes these concerns seriously, but based on our experience, I would not recommend dining here.
