Oh man, what a pleasant discovery! From the sweet, smiling and helpful waitresses at the entrance,…read moreall the way to the clean bathrooms and then back in between with the unique Filipino food, this place defines the term "hidden gem"! After bookmarking it months ago, I finally dropped by to verify the hype and also because every once a while your body tells you to have something different from the 5000 regular choices out there. Filipino food happens to be on my rare list because we do not have many choices in the city and the ones I've been to, weren't anything much to rave about. This place changed the game for me for that cuisine. Surely it doesn't look much from the outside. Located in a shopping outdoor plaza and easily missed while driving by. Once inside, it's a different welcoming world. Contemporary, elegant yet casual decor with a hint of "hey come on in, this is our home, not just another restaurant" versus the usual "Just eat, gimme your money and lemme see your backside soon please" kinda attitude. Well hell, Bingo! That's what I mean. Give that waitress a cookie and an extra star just for that! The name is Angela btw. My first dish here was the Pansit Bihon. It was a day where I wasn't craving red meat so had this on a Saturday for lunch. It hit the spot and more with the added fish sauce and a few squeezes of lemon recommended by sweet Angela, who's the daughter of the owner by the way. Also worth noting at this visit that I asked for a sample of Sisig just to test the waters and make a comparison with another place I'd had that with a major disappointment in the past. After finishing my sample, I was surprised with the super tasty, tangy delightful taste. Couldn't contain myself so told Angela how much I liked it. At this point she said this dish is their specialty and also her mom comes from the Pampanga region where Sisig is originated. Cool! Guess what's my next main dish will be on my next visit. I returned the next day Sunday to give their buffet a try and get well acquainted with Filipino food. This is held from 10-2:30 on Sundays only and the menu rotates every week. If you're fussy about your food, better call ahead and find out what's on the menu. You can do so on Saturdays also if planning to go there for next day buffet. Again, everting from A-Z was super good. 7-8 dishes every time to savour. Really delish, fresh and very light on the stomach. My personal favs were the Misua soup, fried Tulingan (fish), Pork Adobo, chicken Caldereta, and of course a new discovery called Pork Dinuguan. Mouth is watering as I'm writing these. Thumbs up... all the way up up! Excellent job guy! Oh, and try their Ginataang Munggo, a red bean pudding dessert. Mmmm!! Some side notes, they don't have license for alcohol yet but they accepted my suggestion to have a BYOW at least with a smile and said they'd look into it. Other than that, nothing negative to report and I'm very happy to add this place to my "Top Picks" bookmark. Check it out. Cheers and bon appétit :)

Spent 120$ (delivery) to feed 4 people and nobody enjoyed their meal…read more Tasted like regular white people fast food or shopping mall cafeteria quality. It's like they're trying to compete with the "Chinese" restaurants here, which if that's what I wanted then I could have spent 50$ instead to feed everyone from one of those places. This food was not Pilipino and very expensive. Sad that some of my family members had eaten at this restaurant in the past and really liked it, but they really didn't like it this time, the quality went down and it became less exotic and more quebecois style of fast food. 6pc Fried Chicken: Only 5 pieces. Tender inside, everyone favorited them, but all agreed that this was not a foreign recipe, tasted like local white-people fried chicken. Even the gravy reminded me of KFC lol. Surprised it came with fries, felt like I got a delivery from a fast food place, even smelled like it. Pork Bar-Beck-Que (3 skewers): Moist, tender, and many pieces, but the meat was too thin and the sauce was overpowered by sugar, no other flavors noted. Siopao Asado (steamed pork buns): Very plain and cannot taste what's inside. Was favorited by one person and he wants to order only that again. Palabok (sauteed noodles w/shrimp sauce & minced porc): Very bland and greasy. Minced pork was not noticeable, pieces of shrimp was raw and translucent. Pansit Canton (Fried noodles topped with mixed vegetables + pork belly slices): Bland, greasy, but vegetables were nice, big and crispy. Crispy noodles that softened with the sauce on top was a nice texture. Pork belly was just thick pieces of fat and skin, which is alarming because usually the fat is melted off and actually has meat. I've literally had this exact same recipe at a Chinese buffet when I was young, but without the pieces of fat and skin. Sizzling Beef (Marinated beef with onions): Disgustingly strange texture, like it's been beaten to death or marinated too long with an enzyme acid, exterior of each piece was shredded. Flavor was unpleasant and hard to describe, but I think I ruined the "flavor" when I added their vinegar sauce ontop. When a foreign restaurant throws in parquets of taco chili sauce when you ask for hot sauce... I know I'm in trouble lol One of our group bit into a hot pepper and burned her tongue badly, which really surprised me because I didn't notice any spiciness at all from anything I ate. It looks like they don't know how to cook since the spiciness from the hot pepper did not disperse into any of their dishes and just stayed inside of itself. When placing my order, the system automatically locked the delivery to an extra 15$ fee and set the tip to 5%. I didn't change the tip, since 20$ is already enough to pay extra on food that's around 90$. It wouldn't surprise me that I was wrong and that's why they took away one of the pieces of chicken. I thought about calling to verify, but no point since I don't plan on buying from them again since I didn't find their food worth it. I should have known better though. I was taken away by all the good reviews online, but am only noticing now that they're all mostly white people, despite the fact that there are many non-whites in this city. This is clearly a place where most foreigners avoid because it's just another fast food place for quebecers who are known to not like exotic flavors. I think the only thing that was Pilipino here are the employees. The delivery guy was very nice though.

There was a large party sitting towards the front side and next to the window. The decor was very cute, it paid homage to their original location in the Philippines. We ordered Sisig, Adobo Chicken, Lechon Kawali, Palabok and Garlic Fried rice. Everything came out pretty quickly. The tastes are as expected and delicious. You could tell they made it a point to capture their ethnicity in their sauces. One let down was the Lechon, but that could have been our fault as it was late in the day so we should have expected the pork belly to be double fried and hard. Though the skin was crispy, it was really hard. We would come here again just for the garlic fried rice, Sisig and Adobo as those were the highlights of the meal.

If you haven't tried Filipino food realize it's unlike most anything Asian you will find. Lots of dishes revolve around pork and they also love their seafood and fish! Another difference is Filipinos love the condiment mixture of soya sauce and vinegar. For selection of menu offerings it was upon the recommendation of a good Yelper Charles that we try out the noodle dishes. I coerced the fellas I was with to give the sizzling sssig a go and it was the highlight of the night. Ssssig is a mixture or pork jowl and liver with other not as eaten pork bits chopped up into smaller bits and seasoned with lemon and spices. It's a delectable delight. The other dishes we sampled were the regular pancit bihon which had a mixture of fish cake vegetables and some tender lechon (grilled pig). The pancit was very solid also. The last dish we had was the palabok pancit. This is a seafood pancit (noodle)which is done differently depending on the chef. I've had it before very strong seafood gravy before (made by Filipino friends relatives) and this version was milder served here. It was good but not as amazing for me. The inside setting is very casual. Lots of Filipino families and others watching TV in Tagalog at the picnic type tables. Chowing down and enjoying a meal or snack. The inside decor is lots of wood. The restaurant is simple unpretentious. Don't come expecting much. The food is out of this world.

The Good: Overall delicious food…read moreOpen kitchen Good service The Bad: Nothing really, perhaps lack of ambiance The skinny: Go for it, even for those not familiar with this cuisine I just read a large recent poll that Filipino Food was the near the bottom of favorite foods in the world. They must not have had my late mom's cooking or food at La Republika. Either way, they would've polled way way higher. Too many people mention Balut, the boiled duck embryo egg with baby feathers and dinuguan, the pork blood in vinegar with coconut milk with chitlins as perhaps among the most well-known gross out foods of the world. Even if they only knew pancit (noodle disk) and egg-roll cousin "lumpia" the world might be impressed.. However, most FIlipino restaurants in So. CAL and elsewhere are mostly turo-turo which means point-point for what you want in tired Filipino food, cafeteria style, steam tables. So La Republika was a breath of fresh air. There is patio seating as you enter. If you want to eat inside, like on a very cold winter's day, a rainy day, or a sweltering summer day, you might prefer to eat indoors. There are some tables as you walk inside with meh ambiance, and another nicer back room. It's not really an intimate, romantic place. But the complaints stop there. This is an open kitchen, so you can see if someone is doing something bad like some restaurants do behind closed doors, i.e. accidentally dropping then picking food from the floor and serving it...or spitting on the food of an impolite diner. Yes, it happens. But here, no worries because you can see everything happening. Better year, you can see your food being made to order. Service was prompt and courteous. When my super cute little nephew started in on the halo-halo (mixed preserved fruits, evaporated milk, crushed ice, and ice cream, the wait person nice instructed him and his mom, "It's better if you mix everything first...if you don't you only taste the crushed ice" We started off with the lumpia appetizer. It was good but simple. The 2-piece grilled chicken was excellent, with dark meat marinated and grilled, served with rice and sauteed zucchini. I loved the chicken wings appetizer, moist on the outside. Had it with a side of rice. French fries were excellent, as was the citric infused pancit with red bell peppers, cabbage, and radish in boiled rice noodles, then mixed with chicken broth. The food was not totally old school, but some modern improvements in the food was delicious. We shared the halo halo desert. Total cost was $55 before tip. Excellent place. I'd make this a permanent go to place if I lived here.

Many of these items I grew up with having many friends from the Philippines. So hanging around their houses I was introduced to lots of Filipino food at family functions. Filipinos love to cook and they love to share their food! In the summers and for big events it was whole roasted pig (lechon), kare-kare (oxtail in peanut butter) , pancit (their version of mixed-fried noodles in many forms my favourite palabok), lumpia (Filipino spring rolls) even diniguan (pork blood stew). I could keep going on and on but I'm not here to go on forever about how fantastic their food is! For bakery items my faves were siopao buns (a Filipino version of the steamed Chinese char siu bao) and ensaymada - a very delicious sweet bun. Seriously people.....I was able to find a freaking amazing bakery that does two of my favourites. For siopao they have chicken and pork Asado. Fantastic for me to bring home and freeze and then bring them out and microwave for a minute to eat fresh and delicious! Their ensaymada are so light and fluffy and the butter and sugar coating is sinful. I did also see they also had some (Ube) purple yam filled desserts that I will have to try also. Filipinos are as crazy about their Ube as they are about halo-halo. Many other fantastic bakery items I picked up a dozen siopao and 4 sweet buns. Definitely I'll be back to sample other items.
