    Video game pickups (3-8-18)

Calling my taste in music obscure and abstruse would be an understatement. Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys captured my sentiments perfectly with this sardonic spoken word interlude from "Paninaro," an infectious Euro/Italo Disco tune from 1986: "I don't like country-and-western. I don't like rock music. I don't like, I don't like rockabilly or rock 'n' roll particularly. Don't like much really, do I? But what I do like I love passionately." I usually leave brick-and-mortar music stores empty handed, but I always enjoy the hunt, the off chance I'll stumble upon a long-out-of-print Scott Walker album or an Italo Disco compilation featuring B-grade European TV stars speak-singing garbled English lyrics. This particular CD Exchange, located in The Colonnade at I10 and Wurzbach, has come through for me more than once, no small feat given my eccentric tastes. The staff deserve credit for utilizing every square inch of floor space; the store is stacked to the hilt with CDs, vinyl records, DVDs, and video games. The music sections are categorized by genre and alphabetized by artist, an obsessive-compulsive's dream come true. The same holds true for the DVD/Blu-ray section, which occupies at least half of the store. I only wish the staff would treat the video games with as much respect as the other media; on a recent visit, I was taken aback by a cluttered locked cabinet chock full of dusty, yellowed consoles (everything from SNES to Wii U) stacked atop one another with wild abandon. I've been known to spend hours pouring through the CD and vinyl selections, but my patience has paid off on several occasions. Many years ago, I stumbled upon an import copy of Gary Numan's amazing live album "Living Ornaments '79" at a price comparable to what I would have paid on eBay. Last night, I was surprised to find several near-mint vinyl albums to satisfy my proclivity for post-punk, new wave, and art rock, including selections from Be-Bop Deluxe ("Sunburst Finish"), ABC ("The Lexicon of Love"), Thompson Twins ("Into the Gap"), Jean-Michel Jarre ("Magnetic Fields"), and The Comsat Angels ("7-Day Weekend"). The latter album saw a limited release in the US over thirty years ago, so I was thrilled to find a copy on vinyl. I was pleased to discover that CD Exchange has begun accepting and selling vintage video game consoles and software. Last night, I picked up several great games for the Atari 2600, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and SNES. The pricing was all over the place, though, with many items overpriced and many offered at a fraction of their current value. I possess an encyclopedic knowledge of video games (a dubious talent), so I chose wisely and paid less than $20 for a lot of games worth approximately $50 online. Exercise caution and restraint, however, lest you blow $60 on a practically worthless AtGames SEGA Genesis clone console. As physical media gives way to digital distribution, I appreciate the few remaining brick-and-mortar outlets that cater to old souls like me. Your mileage may vary depending on your tastes, but search long enough and you'll surely find at least one CD, vinyl record, movie, or game to suit your style.

The staff mainly stayed at the back desk which I found not bad because it gave me space to find what I was looking for and more. The prices differed and one thing could cost 7.99, another, $22. So it really just depends, however, I will come back again

As with the other CD Exchanges, you're almost guaranteed to find whatever it is you're looking for and so much more. As a fan of martial arts movies, I really enjoy this location as their selection has consistently been better and varied than some of the other locations'. The trade off is that their game selection isn't as impressive. That's not to say that it isn't good, there is in fact a lot to look through, I've just found more hidden gems at other locations. Though I typically skip over the front part if the store during my visits, it is worth mentioning that there is a TON of music to go through and an impressive amount of memorabilia such as action figures and Funko Pop!s, posters, bags and shirts, and a lot more. Everything is fairly priced and there have been instances where I've paid less than what I would have elsewhere or online. If you're a movie buff looking for a quiet place to pass the time, you absolutely have to visit the Movie Exchange.

They even have a section dedicated to Numero Group releases, which I thought was super rad. If you want to try your hand at the bargain bin, there's a room with 50-cent records, too. There is a section near the front (you'll need to kneel) of clearance records underneath some New Arrivals. The folks who work here know and love music, so if you have any questions, I'm sure they'd be happy to chat about it.

I always end up walking out with more than 2 records each visit as their pricing and selection is worth visiting each time. The layout of the shop is great. I recommend starting left side of the shop and work your way around to the right side. You will find all genres sorted out and organized in a very simple and easy to navigate way. Most of the newest arrivals (from folks who are selling or trading their records in) to the back left side. I like starting here just in case I end up finding something cool that just came in. It's a nice way to be able to see what came through to the shop in the last day or two and these records are always diverse in genre. I really enjoy the vintage collection the shop has as decor here. I have seen 8-track players, lunch boxes, older posters from classic albums, cassette players, and even some cool nostalgic childhood toys. I kept smiling at each vintage or throwback items I saw that often tells you "not for sale" or "NFS" stickers on it. As a record collector I take the condition of records seriously before purchasing. I am the annoying record collector who will slide the record out of the sleeve and bend it up to the light to check for scratches, dirt, dust, etc. The last few visits at Crazy Rhythms I have been purchasing and not checking the condition or quality because I trust what I am getting is going to be playable and no bumps/hiccups when I do play them. You will get very good to high-quality records here no doubt. Just heads up - every record collector should know that the cheaper the price (aka clearance or discounted items) usually the quality will suffer but THAT IS NOT THE CASE HERE. You will get better than great quality records and anything that is priced low is probably overstock, common record/selection, and is always priced fairly. You can trust in this record store. Trust. Parking is super easy - just pull right up to the front of the store or park in the private lot. Even when the tourist attractions are busy around the store you will most definitely be able to stop in without having to worry about parking. Parking is never a thing for me even when Fiesta is happening. Check out the selections I have picked up in the few times I have come thru in my photos.
