This place is a sea of movies, music, games, and geeky merchandise! This Movie Exchange is by far the largest I've been to and has an almost overwhelming amount of media to peruse. As with the other CD Exchanges, you're almost guaranteed to find whatever it is you're looking for and so much more. As a fan of martial arts movies, I really enjoy this location as their selection has consistently been better and varied than some of the other locations'. The trade off is that their game selection isn't as impressive. That's not to say that it isn't good, there is in fact a lot to look through, I've just found more hidden gems at other locations. Though I typically skip over the front part if the store during my visits, it is worth mentioning that there is a TON of music to go through and an impressive amount of memorabilia such as action figures and Funko Pop!s, posters, bags and shirts, and a lot more. Everything is fairly priced and there have been instances where I've paid less than what I would have elsewhere or online. If you're a movie buff looking for a quiet place to pass the time, you absolutely have to visit the Movie Exchange. read more

I used to visit here often (great movie selection and prices), but will no longer be supporting a business that stands for this behavior. Has the biggest selection I've ever seen. Awesome place for any Movie buff to get Great deals on DVDS. The Service is also Fantastic, every time I've been out there, the people working there are Super nice and you can tell they genuinely love what they do. The main guy that works there is a real piece of work. I called on the phone what would be a general estimate for my sealed blu rays. It wasn't a problem before and people have helped me with the prices so I know if I want to sell it or not. But this guy says straight up shame on them for doing that. He doesn't help me and says I have to come into the store. Anyone who says the phrase "shame on them" (if they aren't hurting anyone) when talking about their employees shouldn't be running the place. All I have to say is shame on him, whoever disrespectful rude unhelpful person he is. I definitely won't be going back anytime soon. I hope everyone who is looking to sell dvds, blu rays, vinyl, and cds finds a new place they don't respect you there. These types of stores are now a rarity and as a movie and memorabilia collector I love visiting them. When I'm in San Antonio I will go by and check the store for any and many cool finds. The staff is friendly and the selection is unmatched if you're looking for a movie. It's definitely a throwback to Blockbuster style selections and it had records and posters and other miscellaneous entertainment stuff. Definitely a place I'll go to when I'm in SA. read more

As digital distribution becomes increasingly dominant, I find myself appreciating brick-and-mortar stores, especially resellers with an ever-changing inventory of media. I'm the target age for downloadable content, yet I prefer collecting physical media. Movie Exchange is a media collector's dream, with a huge stock of music (mostly CDs but a few vinyl records, too), movies, and video games. I seldom visit this location due to its proximity to Peter Piper Pizza (screaming ADHD children and drunken parents are my kryptonite), but I've found several great deals here over the years. The decor takes me back to the late 80s/early 90s when the building was occupied by HEB Video Central, a long-defunct VHS rental chain. I was a tot, but I remember ogling the dust-covered VHS clamshell boxes for Z-grade horror filth such as "Erotikill" and "Headless Eyes." The walls remain plastered with pop culture imagery from the era, including posters for "Terminator 2" and "Bull Durham." Retail archaeologists will find much to savor just by stepping foot into this place. Though my tastes are admittedly abstruse, I've stumbled upon a few amazing finds on every visit. About a year ago, I was ecstatic to find pristine DVD copies of several European art trash horror movies with amusingly lurid titles (e.g., "Your Vice is a Locked Door and Only I Have the Key" and "Nude for Satan"). A few weeks later, I picked up a copy of David Bowie's 'hours...' on 180-gram vinyl. $50 for a vinyl record is usually more than I'd be willing to spend, but this particular album is personally significant to me*. The video game section is limited to disc-based games from the last several generations (PS1 and beyond), so Atari and NES fans should look elsewhere. Over the past several years, I've found roughly a dozen bargain-priced Wii games and several good deals on Dreamcast titles. The Game Over at Bandera and 1604 remains my go-to place for used video games, but the selection at Movie Exchange is decent and worth perusing. The demise of physical media is imminent, but stores like Movie Exchange, CD Exchange, and Half Price Books are keeping the dream alive. Movie Exchange is by far the largest used media store I've visited in San Antonio, so I'm sure I've missed several treasures. If you're passing through Leon Valley, treat yourself to a heaping bowl of sinus-clearing lamb soup at Kungfu Noodle and spend a leisurely afternoon browsing the aisles at this used media mausoleum. _____________________________________________ *In the late 90s, David Bowie held a "Cyber Song" contest on his website/ISP BowieNet. He provided the instrumental track to a tune called "What's Really Happening?" and fans submitted lyrics. The winning lyrics would be featured on Bowie's forthcoming album and the winner would fly to New York to watch Bowie record the song. Like any teen with arty inclinations, I fancied myself a brilliant lyricist and poet. I also felt that I'd absorbed enough of the man's discography to compose a song in the Bowie mold. I took a few days to polish my contribution prior to sending it, but I expected nothing. After all, I was competing with thousands of diehard Bowie freaks, including several prominent artists (**cough cough...Marilyn Manson...*cough cough**) who allegedly contributed submissions. A few days later, I opened my email and saw a message from "davidbowie@bowie.net." I assumed it was spam or perhaps a troll. After doing a bit of sleuthing, I realized it was from the man himself! I shuddered to open the message for fear that Dame David would disapprove of my adolescent attempt at songwriting. To my relief, he not only praised my contribution but claimed that the themes mirrored those on his forthcoming album. He also expressed curiosity about me: who I was, my background as a writer, etc. Over the course of several email exchanges, he learned much about me and encouraged me to pursue a career in the arts. I wasn't sure what to expect from a pen pal correspondence with David Bowie (a lecture on Thelema, a debate on gender fluidity, rock star ennui?), but I was ill-prepared for his favorite topic: SpongeBob SquarePants. Yes, the man responsible for the nihilistic, cocaine-addled Thin White Duke was obsessed with SpongeBob SquarePants. I feigned mutual enthusiasm because...well...he was David Bowie. The fans ended up selecting the winner. I lost. I was disappointed, but the words of encouragement from the man himself were more than I could have ever hoped. Much to my elation, however, I later discovered that he had recorded an alternate version of the song with my lyrics. I've been dying to hear it for almost twenty years now. Interest in Bowie's oeuvre remains strong, so perhaps the song will appear on a future compilation. In the meantime, I can gloat that I share something in common with John Lennon: we both wrote a song that David Bowie recorded! read more

I had a very bad experience at this location. The customer service at this location was very surprising considering how chill the vibe is. The lady I dealt with was named Laura. I even told her that the customer service she was providing was horrible and that she's making me feel like I'm inconveniencing her by making her ring up my purchase. She didn't even acknowledge that I said hat and kept going. The other gentleman that initially was helping me was also very rude. I asked him to ring up all the movies I selected and give me a total price and he said "that's not normally something we do" I couldn't understand why he couldn't do that. So I asked why and he just walked over to Laura and had her deal with it. I mean, am I suppose to ring the dvds myself? The store was dead, it wasn't busy so why the attitude?? This store is weird. I was new in going in & had some movies to trade but really just wanted to find out how their operation worked to see if it would be a cool place to trade & switch movies. They have no counter space to put your movies down on to sort through them & a buzzer that goes off if U try to ask for counter help info by the door that seems designed to force U to move into the store and get into line to buy something. There was a young girl and some old dude behind the counter. The old dude wanted to be helpful but the girl came up & rudely said that they had customers and I was in the way of the door since they have no counter space with the buzzer going off and shuffled me out the door with my videos even though I told her I was a brand new potential customer interested in trading, etc. From my experience with them, I think they want to force U to go into the store so U first find stuff U might want and as Marianne S from 1/10/2016 says not give U much for your stuff on trade after U wait to get through a poorly managed line! If they see U have stuff to trade and want to see how they work, the young girl who apparently runs the store hustles U rudely out the door in a routine matter like she has done it many times before! The old man acted embarrassed like he knew something about customer service but the girl had him intimidated!
